I had the cowboy steak. They did not cook it the way I wanted it «medium» it came out well done but it was still juicy and delicious. They did offer to get me another one but I did not want to wait. Nice place with friendly people.

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! The staff here are perfect & the food is delicious!
Prices are reasonable too! The atmosphere is very comfortable with good acoustics.
Call for a reservation on the weekends or holidays!

Really enjoyed French Onion Soup and Chicken Manicotti Alfredo with 4 friends I’ve been dining with once a month for 15+ years. Four of us had the French Onion and one had the creamy Steak soup. The two who had the Atlantic salmon were fans and I’m told the pork ribs were very good. The pretzel bread sticks and the sweet bread that were on the table were both excellent.
Had most of my manicotti to take home for next day, plus got a really good dessert to take home — the Chocolate Fantasy Cake.
Brian provided attentive and accommodating service and helped make the dinner fun.
It was a pleasure and hope to repeat the experience.

One of the best. Our friends went with us and everyone of us was impressed by our meals. The steaks were tender and done to perfection. My wife ordered chicken piccata and she said it was the best she had.
This is a place we will frequent often.

Other than the waiter being wonderful, there isn’t much more I can say that was good about our recent experience. I realize this is a steakhouse, but I ordered the salmon and it was so dry I could barely swallow it. You get about 4 string beans with your dinner. My companion’s chicken was also extremely dry. I think they just grabbed the meat off of the buffet line, plated it, and charged 4 times the amount for it. For the price that they charge I can think of about a 100 other places I would rather go to in the Des Moines metro area that is better than AJ’s.

Best food and best service I have enjoyed in years. Absolutely sublime dining experience. Brian could give lessons on customer service.

Angie the bartender is a goddess from the heavens! The french onion soup is delicious, and the steak salad with house dressing is always spot on. Even though the sampler breads are delicious, don’t load up before your meal. This is the best spot in the area to grab a great meal, plus you can watch the ponys run!

I know it’s in Iowa, but that’s not far, Vegas. You can do it! Because you seriously need to come and taste what an Iowa steakhouse (in a casino) can do for about half the price.
This place is beautiful on the inside. I walked into a casino, but didn’t smell the nauseating smoke or hear the ‘ding ding’ of obnoxious slot machines. Just incredibly friendly people on a very cold day (Iowa — so much snow! Why?).
Let me tell you that the warmth of this restaurant from the ambiance and the people will have you thinking you’re actually in Vegas and not Iowa. Beautiful white table cloths, candles and attentive service, and that doesn’t even include the food!
So, let me get started on that! First course was a delicious french onion soup with warm bread twists and soft, sweet butter. Then came a shrimp cocktail with prawns of substantial size and a mix of cocktail sauce and horseradish that had just the right bite.
Next came the main course. I had the surf and turf, but subbed the small steak for a bone-​in ribeye ($ 6 more — what??). It came with lobster mac and cheese and green beans and was divine! The steak was seasoned and cooked so perfectly that it rivaled almost anything I’ve ever had. The lobster mac was a little dry and curly macaroni was used, but it was still pretty freaking good!
The service was really great. Friendly, friendly people, never had to wait for anything. Food came out really quickly and was really one of the most perfect meals I’ve had in a long, long time.
I highly recommend that you get here to this restaurant and eat to your heart’s content, there aren’t many places like this around. I loved it!
