Tavern 27

This place has a menu and décor of an upscale restaurant with chef prepared food. It has an adjoining bar next door. A reservation is recommended. I decided to try Tavern 27 with some friends as we are local and were curious. After arriving there was some confusion with our reservation but quickly taken care of. I’d characterize the service as a bit slow with a breakdown in structure i.e.) take drink order, ask about appetizers, etc Anyway, the drunken mushrooms were average and the seafood bisque was a bit clumpy and bland. Our meals showed excellent presentation and sides were good. I thought it odd that ALL of our meat dishes were spiced well but not cooked to proper temperature. A medium steak was extremely rare, salmon was WAY over cooked, and another steak ordered medium well was cooked to the consistency of tree bark. Cooking meats to the proper temperature is a basic cooking skill. Not sure what happened. Anyway, the atmosphere was nice for the Altoona area but the meals fell a bit short for our dinner party.

We really enjoyed our dining experiences. The food was delicious, good service and nice décor. The prices are very reasonable. The only downside was that every visit they had an event that made the beautiful patio area unusable to the restaurant guests. Hopefully we will get to use it before it gets cold. I would highly suggest a visit.
