Came to Amarillo and my daughter recommended this place. Good atmosphere, great waitress, good food but I didn’t find anything special about it. If I come to town again I would probably not rush back here but wouldn’t avoid it, either.

Just finished driving back from McKinney, TX to ABQ for a one-night sleepover in Amarillo. Rained almost all the way; remnants of serious ice storm; tired; hungry. We looked in Unilocal for a good restaurant and Abuelo’s caught our eye — never been there before. What a treat! Really friendly and on-purpose greeting and service. I had the Tortilla Soup and my wife had Charro Beans and Rice — just right for a good night’s sleep on a not over-filled stomach. The food was better than good and the ambience enjoyable — bustling with families, celebrations and conversations … and enjoyable. Next time in Amarillo we WILL go back! This time with more of an appetite to explore their extensive menu. And … I will read up on my history of Mexico to see if I can decode more of their wonderful(!) murals. They are in Diego Rivera style and depict many historic personalities. The only ones we could make out without further study were Frida Kalo, Diego Rivera, Leon Trotsky, Napoleon III/Maxmillian I, and Pancho Villa. I am looking forward to both the food and the mural revisitation!

Everything’s great. I’d recommend anything on the menu. It’s all excellent. Love the little tablet like game system for the kiddos!

Excellent! Best. Cheese. Enchilada. Ever! Chips and all three salsas were fresh and tasty. Hubby’s chili rellano was great and we both loved the papas. Will definitely go back again if ever in Amarillo again!

Abuelo’s — 7:00pm — 9.25.15 We showed up at Abuelo’s just before 7pm. The hostess was kind and she gave us a buzzer, with an estimate of a 10 – 15 minute wait. She was spot on. Just under 10 minutes and our table was ready. Our server, Matthew was great. He was prompt with requests and he made solid recommendations. Chips and salsa were never empty. Travis and I ordered Jack & Coke and the bartender made them super stiff. Two enthusiastic thumbs up! We ordered queso and the green chili quesadillas for appetizers. Creamy and steaming hot, the queso really hit the spot, and it had the perfect texture. I LOVE their green salsa. I’m not sure what all is in it, but it’s fruity and tastes like kiwi, it’s a wonderful departure from the classic salsa. The green chili quesadilla wasn’t my favorite. To begin with, some of the tortilla was soggy, but the parts that were nicely toasted were delicious. The dish contained lots of bell peppers and tomatoes, but the green chili component seemed to be a little lacking for being the namesake. It was okay, but I like some of their other appetizers better. Travis ordered the pork tenderloin with the honey-chili glaze. It was really tasty, and the glaze was sweet with a nice kick. The pork was perfectly cooked, nice caramelized bits outside and juicy inside. Mom and I shared the combo beef and chicken fajitas. I asked Matthew if the beef fajitas are tender, so many places serve shoe leather as beef fajitas. The beef was indeed tender, and it had a good flavor. I ran across a couple of chewy pieces of beef, but nothing bad enough to complain about. Grilled to perfection, the chicken had the char that I love and maintained its juiciness as well. My favorite part is always the tortillas(yay, carbs!) and they were soft and fresh, as always. Mom ordered the Dulce De Leche Cheesecake to go, to take back to Dumas for later. It looked amazing but I didn’t get a bite :( Over all, we really enjoyed our meal. Love Abuelo’s!

First of all… I’m Mexican. Born here but parents are straight up Mexican. So it’s really hard for me to pay someone to make me food when I can it made authentically at home. So with that said, this place is great. Delicious food and great service.

The best in Amarillo, never had a bad meal there. The service has always been good. I don’t drink and drive but my friends say that the margaritas and bloody Mary’s are good.

I always have to eat here when I come to amarillo! People are nice, service is great, food is amazing. Love the green and red salsa. I always order the chicken chimichanga and don’t forget the papas! Also my cousin loves to order the stuffed chicken zucchini or the spinach enchiladas. My picture is the lunch portion

I know it’s a trend with me, but five f$&@ing stars!!! Wife did the enchiladas, I had the honey glazed pork tenderloin, holy hell was it good… add to that negro modelo on tap and food to make the kiddos happy. Bottom line, both meals were executed perfectly, the honey glaze while spicy, was unbelievable! Come here for good food…

This go around was excellent! I ordered the fajita Chimichunga and it was delicious. The tri-salsa starter was amazing. Our food came out quickly and the waitress was attentive. Enjoyed the little game console too. Would definitely return.

Great Tex Mex, love the salsa and enchiladas. Huge menu, with lots of choices. I like the three enchilada deal, where you can pick any three you like. They have a selection of carnitas, beef, chicken, spinach, cheese or avocado. and a choice of different sauces for each one. I picked the spinach, carnitas and beef. You have to remember, it’s not Mexican, it’s TexMex. I grew up in San Diego, and if you’re looking for that style of Mexican food, around here, good luck. Just like you won’t find«queso» at any Mexican food restaurant outside of Texas. You have to adapt to the culture and remember there are different variations wherever you go.

Large portions, love their chicken enchiladas! Chicken was tender, beans and rice were seasoned properly with enough salt and flavoring. The portions here are LARGE. I definitely had leftovers for lunch and dinner the following day. For starters, the complimentary chips and three types of salsa are OK, but my favorite is the regular tomato salsa. If you order tea… make sure you actually get refilled with TEA, I could have sworn my tea was made out of 1 tea bag and 50 gallons of water… barely even tasted or looked like tea.

Overpriced and watered down margs. Potential for good things, but unrealized. Everything is not real: salsa, guac, «carnitas.» The server was very nice. The food sucks.

My 1st visit here so I won’t give it 5 stars until I try this place again, but the Chicken Zucchini was absolutely delicious! The sauce was so good I could eat like a soup! One of the better Restaurants here in Amarillo!!! A must try!!! Excellent!!!

The safe bet, so to say: always good, family friendly, and a nicer atmosphere that’s elegant yet still causal dress. The food is tasty but suffers from that bland corporate effect, you know no real spice or unique flavor, it isn’t bad just average. The fajitas are one of the better choices as they don’t cheat you on meat and the portion is rather large. Enchiladas offer several choices but the chicken and sour cream stand out(probably because it isn’t a spicy choice). Chips and salsa are great and the offer reasonable drink specials too, so it is good to stop and get drink… maybe an appetizer.

Almost like a Casa Bonita! Great salsa selection, very spacious, good margaritas, solid burritos, yea yea it’s a chain I don’t care it’s better than the majority of «Mexican» restaurants I’ve been to and I’ve been to many.

Great mexican food– a different taste than most other places. Most people either love or hate this place, so you’ll have to make up your own mind. The papas are amazing, and I highly recommend the Pork tenderloin. The layered dip is always a good way to start the meal off and the Margarita pie is a good way to finish it. The last time I was here, the only problem we had was with the hostess, who kept us waiting over an hour for a table of 4 and seated many people who had come in after us. Upon bringing this to her attention, she seated a couple of more parties of 4 that were after us and then showed us to our table. Jerk. The waiters have always been good and attentive, and the food is consistently good. In the rare times I have had a problem with it, the manager has talked to me and made sure it was done right, and usually comped the item.
