Every single time I walk down the steps of India palace, I am always welcomed by a smile of the owner of the restaurant! The buffet for lunch never disappoints and is always kept with hot, delicious food! Best Indian restaurant in Ames, for sure

Being white and from America the food looks less appetizing but oh my God when I actually tried it it was amazing! It’s always hot, they never run out, and it is DELICIOUS! Best place to eat on campus, no contest. They have a lot of not spicy options too for people like me that can’t stomach a jalapeño.

This is the first time I have tried this restaurant. The ambiance is a little lacking but the food, people, and service were great. I ordered the lentil soup, shrimp vindaloo, assorted pickles, and the garlic nan. Every thing orders exceeded my expectations. I can handle food spicier than most people and asks the waiter to make it fairly spicy. The cook delivered on this request. The lentil soup was perfectly flavored and the shrimp vindaloo was very flavorful and the extra heat was perfect. The chef even came out to make sure he got it right. This place is worth trying and I am planning to come back on my next trip to Ames.

Wow. Amazing. This is the best Indian restaurant I have ever been to. Food was so good! The service also wonderful. It is cute and quiet in the beat kind of way.
when we first got there I see that there is only one server working and he is a bit flustered when he sees there were no menus to seat us with. He runs some drinks then takes us to a table and then brings us menus we stared with the vegetable plater. I’m not sure what everything on it was but it was really good.
So we get the starter and put in our order. I got the paneer masala and my boyfriend got an eggplant dish. We got our food and wow! The paneer was really good. And there were a few chunks of green pepper and onion. Just enough to make it super tasty. The rice was cooked perfectly and so was the naan. My boyfriend ordered his hot and it WAS!
So we’re eating and the server cam over and asked how it was. I tell him how much I like it and comment that it’s way better than Indian delight. We then proceed to have a 5ish min conversation about how overpriced and bad it is. We talked about other things and just had a good time. He is really cool!
So we got the pistachio ice cream and at first glance it looked really snall. But the flavor was out of this world. The pistachios helped counter the sweetness of the ice cream and made it perfect.
The food was so amazing and we will be going back a lot. I recommend this to everyone. I was going to get pictures but it was to good. :)

Very nice staff. Food was ok; the buffet was a bit bland for Indian cuisine. Offering mulligatawny or another simple soup would help.
Disclosure: I do not eat meat, so I didn’t try the two meat items on the buffet.

I heard around town and read on Unilocal a lot of bad reviews about Indian Delights, Ames’ other Indian restaurant, and I figured India Palace’s buffet would have SOMETHING I liked.
The price is definitely right for their daily lunch buffet — 11am-​2pm, but the selection is fairly small. But hey, it is $ 7 and some change. The food was pretty good though I think there should’ve been more spicy and flavorful options. I know the majority of people in Ames are midwestern white folk but Campustown diners are often those of color who likes more spice and flavor.
My wife really loved the chicken vindaloo and I thought all of it was fair. The food is good and authentic but definitely toned down for a midwestern palate. I plan on returning for a filling and affordable lunch.

As a person who isn’t familiar with Indian cuisine, India Palace is in my mind okay.
There was a large variety of buffet dishes available, and I sampled a great number of them only to find that the overall flavor between them was largely the same; cumin.
The lunch was filling, due to the prevalence of potatoes and cauliflower, but the price seemed a bit high for what I ate.
The seating conditions are rather cramped, and the dining area itself is not very refined, but these are not strongly detracting.
All in all not a bad place to grab some quick Indian cuisine, but not somewhere that I would say was memorable.

I was spoiled living in Minneapolis and having access to great ethnic food at every turn — Greek, Ethiopian, Indian, Colombian — you name it, it was there. However, for a town of its size, Ames has a great little collection of ethnic restaurants.
Take, for example, Campustown’s India Palace, tucked below street level on Hayward Avenue. I’ll admit I had my doubts. But I was soon to be impressed.
We ordered beverages and, interested in sampling the Indian beer selection, asked our server about them. While he had never tried them (probably due to the fact that he was not old enough to drink) he was able to tell us that they were on the lighter side. Later in our meal he took the time to ask us what we thought of the beer — a quality I appreciate in a server.
The food was delightful. Nothing is ever spicy enough for me and normally in this town saying I want something spicy nets me the equivalent of what I consider to be very mild, or on the milder side of medium at best. Yet there’s still a level of apprehension when presented with the mild-​medium-​spicy scale at a place you’ve never been to before. I ordered my chicken vindaloo spicy and was thrilled that it actually was. My boyfriend’s medium heat chicken tikka was even spicier than my vindaloo, a discrepancy based on differing spices, I’m sure. We also got garlic naan which was the perfect accompaniment to the sauce from my vindaloo. I fell instantly in love with India Palace and will definitely be frequenting it.

Although I spent four years as a student in Ames, I never went to India Palace until after I graduated. I went for dinner and the food was good and the owners were very helpful and very friendly. I really like the experience because they were helpful with the menu and very kind. I would recommend this if you are looking to try some Indian food in Ames!

Good food, and very very very friendly owners. I’m thinking that the lunch buffet is definitely the way to go, as if I’d paid a higher premium for dinner there’s a good chance this would be a two-​star review. But the convenience and spot-​on service makes this place a winner.
Nice to see that there are many more Indian restaurants in Ames now, although my heart will always belong to «Indian Restaurant» previously located on Lincoln Way (which later became the awesome «African Restaurant») but both of those — like me — are gone from Ames now. And while I will be back to visit again, those restaurants won’t be.
So I guess what I’m saying is, while India Palace was a completely satisfactory lunch stop, next time I’ll try another.

While on campus for an interviewing trip, I was looking for something different and found this restaurant. This appears to be a family run establishment and service was very attentive and friendly. I was there for dinner, so the buffet was not in operation. All of the food was good. I enjoyed a chicken dish whose name escapes me along with dal makhani and plain naan. I ordered the chicken at the hottest chile level and it was nicely warm, but not incendiary.
The menu comprises pretty standard northern Indian dominated dishes, familiar to those who frequent Indian restaurants in the US mid-​west. I had a nice dinner and would certainly return on a future visit to Ames. It would be nice to be there with a group to allow a wider sampling.

While not the best Indian I have ever had, this is the only place in Ames that actually gets near any sort of flavor.
The lunch buffet is worth your time. If you are scared to try Indian food, head there for lunch a couple of times. Try everything they make and then make your decision. The buffet changes, but they do a great job with vegetarian fare. Their paneer is good, but not great. The malai kofta is fairly good, but also not my favorite. I would go with the paneer dishes if you are new to Indian, or check out one of their meat dishes. You really can’t go wrong as the flavors are milder than other restaurants.
The owners are awesome and will remember you. That is always nice. Also, the atmosphere is calming and you will enjoy your lunch time away from the snow and people.

A change in ownership, and a world of difference in the quality of food. After my latest visit here, my initial impression from a few years ago changed greatly. This is one of the most unique and tastiest restaurants in the Ames area.
A couple of notes: we visited for dinner and didn’t do the buffet. My first visits here a couple of years ago were for the lunch buffet and I thought it was enjoyable but hardly something I would write about. That has changed, and I am giving this place a definite must-​try review. The menu options are vast. We had the Chicken Tikka Masala, and a peas and paneer curry with a very interesting rose flavored yogurt drink. Both were fantastic and met our definition of «spicy.» The naan are made fresh and we really enjoyed the fact that there is a wide choice of breads to choose from instead of the standard plain tandoor naan.
Only issue keeping this from a 5-​star review is the fact that both of our dishes were pretty much in the same curry sauce, and would have appreciated a little more guidance on choosing a contrasting vegetable instead of the identical curry with varying featured ingredients. If you’ve got an adventuresome palate you have to visit this place.
