My boyfriend and I LOVE this place. Although it is closed a little too much, the food is well worth it. I get pork bulgogi and my boyfriend gets fried mackerel. We always have to get dumplings, Kimchi, and pickled radishes too. Delicious!

Great, inexpensive Korean food. I’ve tried the beef bulgogi, the soft tofu soup, and the squid bulgogi with kimchee. The squid was a little rubbery, but everything else was delicious. Free hot tea too.

I felt like I was eating at the empty warehouse. There are no side dishes except kimchi and dumplings which you have to individually pay for. Also there is no air conditioner so good luck eating a hot soup. The food taste pretty good and we’ll worth its price. The service is good as well.

Green walls, free corn tea, and Kpop music! I’ve had the majority of the menu and can’t complain too much. The only prevalent downside to me is that I wish there were side dishes. Those are what make a Korean meal complete. You’ll have to order and pay for your food at the cashier, but they will bring it out to you when it’s ready. On the side of the wall, there is free corn tea for your taking. It is delicious. The walls are lime green and there is also a pool table in the back of the restaurant. Best Food: –Broiled Eel with Rice — A generous portion of Eel is served — Soondobu(Soft Tofu Soup) — Very delicious and a good amount of spice. Good for a cold day in Ames(as wonderful as those are) — Stonebowl Bibimbap– The toppings were not as bountiful as desired, but it’s delicious. The best part is the Fried Egg, Bibimbap sauce, and when your rice gets fried and crispy against the sides of the bowl — Seaweed Tempura Appetizers– Tasty! Customer Service: — There were a few times where the wrong dishes were served to me, but overall I didn’t have too bad of an experience. That is part of the reason I didn’t rate higher. The owner of the restaurant is very nice and friendly.

I absolutely love this restaurant, it is truly a hole in the wall. It is not pretentious, just a very good, modest, and authentic Korean home cooking. I have been in PLENTY Korean restaurants in the US and the world(Detroit, Baltimore, D. C, Chicago, Nashville, Berlin, Prague, etc) — and this one can definitely hold its own. The cons: you have to request the side dish of Kimchi and they only have one type. I am used to the spread of up to 12 side dishes. And the portion is a bit smaller for what I am used to. The menu is also pretty limited. Also, it doesn’t open on Saturday or Sunday. But other than that, I love their food, and I dine there weekly!

The only place to get korean food in Ames, and it’s pretty decent and authentic. The portions are a bit on the smaller side for the price. And it doesn’t quite hit the spot like k-town in Chicago. But I left satisfied enough. I suggest to stay away from the sweet rice drink in the half sized can, the barley bits taste like soggy cardboard.

Scallion is great. They are the only Korean restaurant in a 100 mile radius(there are two others in Iowa City), and they are very good. You can say they are not authentic because they don’t give you all the side dishes before your meal, but this is a modest, small place that serves their food cheap, so I don’t mind not getting the side dishes. The important thing is that everything they serve on their small menu is excellent and authentic. They serve the regular stuff like Bibimbop, Bulgogi, etc., but they make them well here. The chef is always there, working hard in the kitchen, so the food is consistently good. This is one of the two best restaurants in town tastewise(the other being Angie’s Catina). Yes, we have a few other upscales restaurants(e.g., the Café, Café Shi, the Spice, Aunt Maude’s), but they are all overrated, too expensive, and their food don’t taste nearly as good(the food in Ames and Des Moines tends to be way too salty, except at Lucca in Des Moines). Anyways, Scallion is as good as it gets in Ames!

Good food without the fuss. The corn tea is something to be experienced. And obviously, the kim chee, pork katsu and beef bulgogi are favorites.

This is a really good Korean restaurant stashed away and well hidden in the weird gymnasium looking building between Welch Ave and Hayward in Campus town. We’ve always been very pleased when eating here. The seating and surroundings are functional and simple. The menu is pretty tight on choices, but what they do offer is very good and authentic. Make sure to try the Stone Bowl Bulgogi which has the curious characteristic of being the only meal I’ve ever eaten that actually gets hotter(in temperature) as you eat it from the residual heat in the stone bowl. The the hottest-coolest meals you can have in the Ames area.
