This was our first time here and let me tell you it’s so nice and cute place it’s one of those places that belong with the neighborhood it has history with it, the food was amazingly fresh and delicious! We were impressed and I have to tell you they had a dessert cart omg it was awesome we picked the chocolate cake with mocha ice cream and we also pick d the crème brûlée!!! I fell in love with the Crème Brûlee it was so crunchy not burnt sugar and creamy and tasty in the center, omg it’s like I am tasting it for the first time again, lol we will dedicate be back!!!

I cannot believe I have not posted a review for this place, even though this place is the first in my mind when thinking of a good restaurant. Very Cozy, great people, great food, and great drinks. My usual is Chicken mac & Cheese with a glass of Shoofly wine. I have tried many foods there and have never been disappointed. You definitely need reservation for the weekends and holidays.

Have been here twice now and love the atmosphere, the sangria is to die for and the food is wonderful. Small and cozy, it’s a great date night!

I don’t usually bother with dessert at restaurants, but DONOT leave here without getting the carrot cake! I had the lobster mac n cheese as my entrée and I love that they offer the half portion which helps to ease my guilt xD They also give warm bread to start which is always nice. Both of the people I was with really enjoyed their entrees. Service was a little on the slower side but there was only 1 – 2 people serving the entire place on a week night. It didn’t take away from the experience at all, just something to note if you were in a rush.

Phat Cats is the kind of place you just want to come back to over and over and over again. The tiny little annoyances are not enough to deter one from enjoying what is probably one of, if not the best, restaurants in Amesbury, maybe the entire area. You’ll find Phat Cats just outside of the downtown area on what appears to be a side street. If you don’t know where you’re going it can be a difficult find but once you’re there you’re there. OK. Let’s get that little annoyance thing out of way right now. It’s noisy. No, it’s loud, and there is nothing in sight that might even contribute to nixing that. If you have trouble hearing conversation with a lot of ambient noise, you are not going to like this place. Seriously. Depending on where you sit will determine just how bad it is. If you’re fortunate enough to get the window seat it really does go a long way in minimizing the noise factor. If on the other hand, you’re seated at the big round table in the middle, forget it. In the end, this is the only deterrent to Phat Cats that I can come up with and the only thing that cost them a star. The only other thing I wonder about is the spelling of fat and if it’s about not offending anyone. Someone please enlighten me or we’ll never know, I guess. The service here was impeccable. Water was already on the table when we were seated and it was obvious that with a reservation they were expecting us. The list of specials was read to us in detail by a gentleman who obviously knew the menu. Any server who knows the menu inside and out will immediately get the kudos and the tip they so rightly deserve. Oh wait, he was just the beginning. After that our actual server came around to take our orders and never missed a beat. Sometimes they amaze me with their memory when they don’t write anything down. But, if you don’t write anything down and you screw it up, you’re toast. T-O-A-S-T. We started off with the fish tacos as our appetizer. Soft corn tacos filled with blackened haddock, cilantro sauce and fresh black bean butternut squash salsa. Holy crap, were those things good. Probably the best fish tacos I’ve ever had. Blackened and not deep fried and that in itself is a bonus. Flavorful and sauced perfectly. The entrée was a veggie burger, a house crafted patty of rice, grains and beans topped with caramelized onions, mushrooms and cheese served on a beer bun with tortilla chips. The table mate’s choices ranged from swordfish and haddock, to a seafood tart with hand picked cheese plated with olives, pepper crackers, fruit chutney and crostini. As you may be able to tell, this is a glowing review and a restaurant that I highly recommend. If you do decide to try it, make a reservation and request the window table. It’ll help a little with the noise issue which in my opinion, was the only detraction. Next visit I’ll be trying something different, maybe with a little wine and let you know.

I had dinner here on a busy Friday night. The staff was very nice and the restaurant is cozy and clean. We started off with drinks, a blue cheese martini for me and a glass of wine for my wife. My martini was well made and very good. We ordered lobster rangoons next, they were good. From here on though the meal fell apart. The steak I ordered was a little overcooked(definitely not the medium rare I ordered) but very bland. It’s the first time in a while I’ve had to ask a waitress for salt and pepper for a steak. My wife ordered the gnocchi, which was ok but not up to par for a nice restaurant. The sides were also mediocre, I can prepare better vegetables and mashed potatoes at home. Lastly we ordered the crème brûlée. It was also very underwhelming. The top layer wasn’t crunchy and was also not consistently scorched across the whole surface. The dessert overall tasted like pudding. It was a bummer, we both really like a good crème brûlée. I’m not sure why this restaurant is so well rated, my wife and I both thought it was a mediocre meal. Overall almost every dish was poorly seasoned and bland.

Hands down the best restaurant in the greater Newburyport area. It is one of those kind of cool but comfortable storefront places with foodie quality bistro food and reasonable prices. I often crave the savory vegetable brûlée they serve sometimes with fish. The daily specials are always interesting and delicious, and the lobster pillows on the regular menu are my boyfriend and son’s favorite. Everything cooked to order in open kitchen, the staff is friendly and very knowledgeable, the wine steward is exceptional with a great, reasonably priced wine list. If you are a foodie, absolute only place to eat in the area– we’ve tried them all. Get a reservation!

Came here for the first time for an early birthday celebration and it didn’t disappoint. We had a reservation for 6:00 on a Saturday. Good thing, because the place is very small, but cozy. We were given fresh bread, with a garlic spread, very delicious! Two of my friends & I had the calamari; it had a nice coating on it & was a good size. I ordered the seafood stew, very flavorful & ample amounts of clams, lobster, etc. Also had a dirty martini, yum! Food was a little pricey but very good quality. Martini was $ 12, which I found to be on the expensive side. Service was very friendly & efficient. Would definitely recommend checking out Phat Cat Bistro!

I tried explaining to my husband that if you go to a restaurant in Paris, this is what it’s like. I really enjoyed my meal here. We had the Lobster Rangoon, the Haddock, and the Steak Frites. Everything came out perfect with great flavor. Oh and the beer and wine list were great. One thing I would say is that they should highlight that the art on the wall is for sale and proceeds to go a food pantry. They don’t say that, we fell in love with a piece of Art and bought it right after knowing what it would be for. Honestly I would go back.

Let me just say from the outset that reservations are recommended, and that is because this neighborhood restaurant is quite popular, for all the right reasons. We found this restaurant on the way home from Maine, and were graciously seated by a friendly fellow who was kind enough to accommodate weary travelers. It turned out to be an almost magical experience. The wine was perfect. The main courses were beautifully executed by a rather busy kitchen. My wife had lightly breaded haddock, and I had the hanger steak, both exceptionally seasoned and tastefully accompanied(the fish had corn crème brûlée(!) and the beef had roast potatoes that were better than we had in Tuscany). Portions were perfectly designed to leave room for dessert. Their selection is presented at table, and our selections of cake came with probably the best ice cream we have ever had. I can’t say enough about Phat Cats bistro, and we plan to make reservations to drive one hour north to go again. Highly recommended and an excellent value. What a wonderful experience — great vibe, nice people, and excellent food.

Went to Phat Cats last night on a whim. It’s the kind of place where they do amazing comfort food better than anyone. It’s the kind of place you keep going back to when you really want to relax in a warm, comfortable place and be blown away by the food. As soon as you walk in the music is perfect, the décor is warm and inviting, the lighting is perfect, and you are immediately treated as if your being welcomed into someone’s home. My wife commented that it felt like we could be in Cambridge. Perhaps Harvard Square, Central or Inman as well. We’ve been here many times and it’s the kind of place most people could choose anything at random from the menu and nothing will disappoint. This time we were just stopping for a drink and maybe a small bite at the bar. They have really nice prohibition inspired cocktails as well. We chose the Mac and Cheese on this trip. It looked nice when it came but I still wasn’t ready for how blown away we were when we tried it. I can confidently say that there is no better Mac and Cheese than this one at Phat Cats. As with everything else they crank the flavor, texture, and comfort to 11. I will be thinking about that Mac and Cheese and that’s what makes a place great. The whole experience there is just like the food. It’s a great, comforting, warm place.

This is the perfect example of don’t just a book by it’s cover! People have been telling me for ages to go here and we finally took their advice and so glad we did! First of all, their prices for the portion size are excellent. We had 3 drinks, 2 appetizers and 2 entrees all for just over $ 100. Given the size of the portions, we would have easily paid $ 150 or more elsewhere. The service, also, was excellent. Our server was a doll and had great suggestions. We very much enjoyed the Mojito, Lobster Rangoon, Cheese Plate with 3 truly excellent cheeses, Haddock special and steak special. Everything was super fresh, seasoned as it should be and altogether intensely satisfying. This is a small place with only 10 tables and a small bar so plan ahead or go early! As for us, we can’t wait to go back!

What a find! Thanks to the Unilocal reviews we chose this restaurant while passing through Amesbury and it was fantastic! Dinner was delicious — so fresh and perfectly prepared. We had the potato gnocchi with sausage as well as the seafood sauté special. Generous portions and so tasty. Served with homemade bread and a great hummus. Adam and Dean were both so warm and hospitable — the kind of service that made you feel as if you’d been customers for years. And the décor was cool from the exposed brick walls to the tin roof. Would highly recommend the Phat Cat!

Our favorite local restaurant. If only they weren’t so popular. It’s tough to get a reservation on weekends but you can usually slide in early at the bar or take advantage of their weekday beer nights, tapas nights or other special days. I really love going there to grab everything from a burger, the best fish sandwich to whatever their special of the day is. I’m sure we’ve eaten there over 25 times and we’ve never been disappointed ..

Been here a few times since initial review. This place is down right consistent. Fresh. Flavorful. Friendly. Can’t hold the size of the restaurant against its well deserved 5 star rating. Just go here. Enjoy.

We had a wonderful experience here. It’s a smallish place and cozy. A neighborhood restaurant feel. Delicious fish tacos, exploding with flavor. And my wife’s lobster gnocchi was amazing. Good varied menu with interesting cocktails and a good wine list. A nice background soundtrack. Friendly staff. This is definitely worth the trek to Amesbury and we will return. And check out the green period tin ceiling!

Tried this place for dinner. Very nice. From the Lobster Rangoon to the Mac and cheese and the chicken dish over angel hair, everything was tasty and well prepared. The staff was very attentive and helped tremendously. Nice small Restaraunt very impressed. I can only imagine how busy it is on weekends.
