I tried this Gumbo House twice in a row for their BBQ Shrimp Po-Boy and they ruined them by drenching them with tabasco or some other very hot spices. I even specifically asked them to tone down the hot sauce the second time. Maybe they thought I said«ADDMORE!». The downtown Gumbo House seems to still offer the edible po-boys.

If you want something tasty, this is the place to go. It seems a bit pricey but it’s so good that it’s worth every dollar! Had the daily special which was a BBQ meatball po boy with a cup of shrimp creole. All delicious. The boyfriend got the BBQ shrimp po boy with gumbo. All the flavors are amazing! They were fairly fast with getting it out to us, especially for making it fresh! Sodas come in the can. They have beer and wine available as well. Fairly simple menu. Note that the po boys come with pickles in case you don’t like them make sure you request they aren’t added on.

Great food and wonderful service. They let us try the gumbo and jambalaya before we ordered. We had both and loved them.

I need to preface this by saying I was one of those defective individuals that hated Cajun food. I love Cajun music and culture(and the accent — swoon), but I could stand the food. Most of it seems like it was concocted on a dare by bored swamp rats on the bayou. That being said, this was recommended to me by people who love Cajun food as a legit place. My husband frequents the downtown location so much that Gus, the owner, knows Sam’s order when he walks in. So when this location opened up, my husband was as giddy as can be. When he could convince me to go to the downtown location, I’d always just get the blacked chicken Caesar salad. Spicy chicken gives the fresh salad a kick and made me feel like not such a loser about eating a salad in a place where everyone is eating real Cajun food. I’d pick at my husband’s gumbo or jumbalaya every so often and found I actually liked the taste. Now, a year later, I can say with certainty that I LOVE Cajun food. I had tried it many times before but it took Gus and The Gumbo House to convert me fully to Cajun food loving. I was worried the new location wouldn’t stand up to the amazingness of the downtown place but when I went yesterday, I was absolutely blown away. The place is gorgeous and delicious. Clean and child friendly. The downtown location is smaller and kind of divey in a good way but it’s not so great for kids; it’s more for those that work downtown. The new location is perfect for families or those that don’t want to go downtown. Laissez le bon temps rouler!

Service was excellent, food was subpar. I went to lunch here with a friend and we shared the following: Caesar Salad Jambalaya *Blackened Shrimp Po-boy & potato salad Ended with bread pudding dessert The jambalaya lacked flavor, spice and the special creole flavor I had expected. Also– I didn’t see an okra slice anywhere in my bowl :( The po-boy was delish, just the right amount of heat for me, the potato salad complimented the sandwich perfectly. The dessert was very rich, we could only eat ½, would be a great place for a group. I may not return, I can get an equally delish PO-boy at a closer location to my home. I would suggest this place for anyone looking for a new lunch place but not if they are looking for the gumbo or jambalaya.

Had a take out order at the gumbo house and was fairly impressed. The location had jaded me because I don’t think of «good food» in that part of town. However the food was prepared quickly and above the level of quality I was expecting. Would recommend you venture over to old Seward and grab a bite of some real cajun flavor. Food is spicy but not overpowering heat. Worth the trip.

Robust and warming, clean and simple and satisfying. Totally excellent, and we feel like we are in New Orleans, which we have visited many times for the food and drink and fun

Great food and a unique place to eat in Anchorage, which can be sameish restaurant wise.(How many artisan pizza places do we need?) I’d give 5 stars but the service I got was short and the cashier seemed annoyed and scowled at me. It’s ok, I’ll take it. The food is too good.

The night before I went they were broken into, so the trashbags taped over the smashed glass took a little from the décor. The rest of the place looked tastefully decorated and there isn’t a bunch of crazy junk on the wall. The one waitress was a little overwhelmed as she was also the cashier, but she was nonetheless pleasant with me. My to-go order was pretty quick, probably 8 – 10 minutes. I like the gumbo and it is exactly like the one downtown. Same with the jambalaya and the cornbread muffins(even wrapped in plastic wrap). Parking is WAY better than downtown. For any south sider not wanting to drive all the way downtown, it’s definitely worth a look. I’ll definitely be coming back and might even expand my horizons and try something else on the menu.

Now on the Southside! First time visit since I refused to drive downtown. T0 go order was ready in 10 minutes. Word of mouth has not spread since they were not as busy as I expected. Blacken Catfish with rice and beans was excellent. Little spicy for the better half so next time I will ask to use ½ the spices. No problem though. I finished it. I ordered the bucket of Jumbo. Absolutely fantastic! More then any human should eat at one sitting so will be having for lunch today. Give them a try.

Glad to see The Gumbo House come to South Anchorage. Great food just like the downtown location. PoBoy was yummy yummy, Kitchen Sink gumbo was full of chicken, shrimp, sausage and oysters.
