Angelus Oaks Lodge

This review reflects the one night we stayed in cabin 12 on ¹⁰⁄₁₇ over my birthday weekend.
I stumbled upon the Unilocal reviews of this wonderful place after having spent hours scouring through possible rental cabins in Big Bear further up the road (and the mountain). As this last weekend was Octoberfest, most of the really great cabins were rented… what was left were the ones that were clearly in decline, outdated, too kitschy and soul-​less, for lack of a better word.
All those adjectives changed when I spotted the pictures of this lovely lodge.
It actually happened to be closer to where our private fly fishing guide would be taking us along the Santa Ana… but what really made us commit to renting here was talking to Sunny on the phone.
All the reviews mention how lovely she is, and it is the truth.
Upon pulling up at the lodge house for check in, Sunny came out on the porch to greet us… like a mom who has been waiting on her out of town children to arrive and can’t quite contain her excitement at seeing them.
She invited us in, told us the history of the lodge and the cabins, and invited us to stay and watch the Notre Dame football game with she and her husband, Charles (a gem in his own right!)
We declined as we had a full evening of cozy cabin activities… and this cabin was perfect for them.
The décor for cabin 12 was early Americana; and it was spotless, comfy, and warm. There are no fireplaces in these cabins… there is furnace heat… but the trade-​off was having the warmth and light of these caretakers with their attention to service, this chunk of land and cabins, and their visitors.
The kitchen was fully stocked… my guy prepared a gourmet meal on the gas stove… and we enjoyed our time there immensely.
This place is a bargain ($ 105 cash or check per night on the weekend) and the perfect place for FISHERMEN. Both the Santa Ana River and Jenks Lake are nearby.
There is more to this mountain than snow sports.
Settle in to these cabins for a bit and fish, hike, cycle, sit on the front porch and veg, or amble down to the lodge and visit with Charles and Sunny.
You won’t be sorry.
I give this place five stars for its heart and soul.

Sunny was such a kind and wonderful person. She showed us around the grounds and was so helpful and friendly. The cabins are so cute. We stayed in cabin 1 which was amazing. The kitchen was perfect for entertaining. Waking up and having a cup of coffee on the porch was one of our favorite experiences on our trip. Definitely will be coming again. Thank you Sunny!

Stayed 1 night in Cabin #6 as we were up there for a wedding. What a pleasant surprise! Our cabin was cute, with 2 twin beds, a fridge, microwave and a hot plate. Sunny was very sweet and hospitable. We are going to try to return with the whole family and book a few cabins!

Stayed 1 night last weekend and loved it! Our family of 5 stayed in #2, the 6 person cabin, and our friends (family of 4) stayed in #3, 4 person cabin. We had the best time — the kids had a blast hiking and exploring nearby so they were in heaven. Our cabin had a huge front porch so we hung out on the porch for hours. We were originally going to explore the area more, but the cabins were so cozy and we were tucked into trees (although you can see the highway) so we were content to stay where we were. Super quiet at night and we had a great night’s sleep. Sunny, the owner, is very friendly and helpful. The cabins were very clean and very well-​stocked. Bring food though because the grocery store across the street had almost nothing in it. The restaurant next to the store though was great — had a very good breakfast there. Also — the photos from another reviewer from 2009 are outdated. The new owners took over in 2011 and completely renovated — we checked out some of the other cabins and they all look nice. Will definitely go back!

This place is really cool! Has a very historical feel. Each room is its on small little cabin/​cottage with a parking space for ur car like a mini home. There was a microwave, 4 burner stove/​oven and fridge. A small closet to put your things in and a bathroom. I thought it was very quaint. I would love to come back again!
Oh and the lady Sunny that works there was super sweet. She gave me her cell number in case I needed her and when I got lost on my way up to the lodge directions (at 10pm at night because we ended up leaving really late)
Overall really great experience. Bring snow chains! The cabins are somewhat uphill. And the place is cash only! I payed less than $ 100 i think that is a steal.

We were looking for lodging nearby to a weekend wedding we were invited to, Friends found the Lodge and we made reservations. When we arrived, we were greeted by Sunny and Charley, the facility managers who seemed genuinely glad to see us, The cabin we rented was basic, though charming and came equipped with all the amenities we needed; coffee, coffee maker, microwave, dishes, tolletries, etc, The beds were comfortable and the bedding was warm and comfortable. The Lodge has an actual community Lodge that has great country appointments like overstuffed furniture, an inviting fireplace, pool table and a TV. Nice place to kick back.
This place is a real find. We enjoyed our stay and look forward to a return. The pricing… very reasonable.

Great Experience! My wife and I had been watching for opening of cabins for some time now. Before they actually opened this summer they allowed us to do a trial run of one of the newly renovated cabins… What a treat and reasonably priced!!! Sunny is a fantastic hostess, making sure we were comfortable and ready to help with anything. Beautiful surroundings, close to Jenks Lake for great summer recreation. Kitchen nicely equipped. We are anxious for our next visit!!!

So if you haven’t seen this place lately you will be super pleased. They’ve made major renovations and have upgraded almost everything. Their grand opening is this weekend and the band will be breaking out their strings & drums & tuning up their voices after a long break from college. Come join the fun this Saturday night about sundown. Bring your own food & snacks & a few chairs and blankets for some good clean fun! Alcohol is allowed but don’t get too crazy the kids will be there too!

I loved this place and it was cheap! My girlfriend and I drove up here over a year ago for the Valentine’s day weekend and we had an incredible time. It was completely snow covered but the location was perfect because we didn’t have to put our chains unless we continued up the mountain, beyond Angelus Oaks. The owners are fantastic, very accommodating and super friendly. Our cabin was cozy but still big enough for the two of us. The lodge was a nice warm place to defrost and relax in the winter time and thankfully, the cabins got quite hot at night too. Big Bear is a bit of a drive away but we only went up there to go skiing once that weekend so it didn’t feel like we did a lot of driving. Like I mentioned, the cabin we were in was very small and cozy but it had a kitchen and bathroom (and a heater of course) which was great since we brought our own food and we had ourselves an incredible dinner in our cabin.
We did not have a dog back then so I’m happy to hear that they are dog friendly — I am looking forward to coming back with our dog in the summer to do some hiking in the beautiful San Bernardino Mountains.

My expectations were met and this place is very peaceful. The cabins are definately older and many are out of commission in need of bad repair. If you don’t mind a few cobwebs and bugs inside you’ll be fine. They are very pet friendly. For the price and location you can’t beat it!
They have a lodge with a pool table, tv, and tons of books. The owners are very nice and accommodating. There is a restaurant and expensive local grocer across the street. There is Jenks lake about 7 miles from the cabins which is stocked with trout. The lake was pretty crowded on Memorial Weekend, but it was still nice and relaxing.
The website states the cabins have BBQ’s which is not entirely true. I recommend bringing your own. No camfires at the cabins due to fire season.
If you are looking for a quiet getaway without the Big Bear prices, the Lodge is your place.
