42 Degrees is as much a functional-art gallery as it is a head shop. It is the single most stocked head shop I’ve ever been to– they have everything from $ 15 little steamrollers to $ 4500 Salt+Illy collaborations that are one-of-a-kind. Their selection of waterpipes is unmatched in any store I’ve been in before or since. Everything from Pure, We The People, to Illadleph coils and Roor customs. They also display custom work by artist, and they carry all of the major artists I’ve heard of, and many I haven’t. There is a good collection of incense, bongos, and beads in one corner(normal head-shop fare), as well as a very large selection of rolling papers, blunts, and other tobacco behind the counter. Finally: they have a raffle every year. I HIGHLY recommend you enter this raffle. I bought a $ 10 ticket in October, and in March won a $ 400 custom Freeek dry piece. If you’re looking for anything plexiglass or metal, go to Stairway to Heaven. For anything in the low-to-medium price range, or any custom work you need done, hit up Foggy Bottom.(both around the corner) Anything higher-end in glass, this is the shop you should be at.

When it comes to Ann Arbor head shops, I prefer 42 Degrees to Stairway to Heaven. Why? Namely because, as mentioned in my review of StH, the signs at StH make me want to scream. 42 Degrees is a little more laid back, often under or even un-staffed, but it’s easy to find someone to answer questions and help you out. They have a greater selection of glass pieces and while they have other things, they are mostly focused on pieces. Some of the stuff here is absolutely beautiful — definitely artistic, albeit expensive. Even for those who aren’t into«counterculture»(not that I’m saying they sell anything to be used with anything except tobacco!) this is definitely a very cool, very Ann Arbor spot to check out — really, really interesting stuff.

42 Degrees is one of the best head shops in Ann Arbor. Great selection on a lot of different types of «accessories», from the basic and strictly utilitarian to the downright«I’m-going-to-make-a-day-of-it» pieces. They also have a lot of incense, candles and tobacco for hookahs, which is why I’m the shop so often. And without fail, I always get a free lighter with my tobacco! :) $ 10 limit on credit/debit.
