Previously, I gave this five stars. It was our favorite in town, consistently above average. Sadly, It has gone down hill. Plastic plates. Distracted service. The food is now low quality. Below average. There has been obviously been some changes for the worse.

Having gone to U of M, this was always one of my favorite Indian restaurants. My husband and I were recently in town and were excited to hit up the lunch buffet. The service was slow and the plates at the buffet felt greasy and dirty. Our glasses looked dirty as well. The food was very greasy, and really seemed to have gone downhill from the last time we had eaten here. We had raved about Madras to some friends who met us there, and we were embarrassed. It was not a pleasant dining experience and we will likely not be eating here again.

My husband and I had a very tasty meal at Madras. The service was impeccable. The server had a steel trap for a brain… he took both of our orders without pen/paper(my worst nightmare) and everything came out exactly as ordered. I saw him do the same thing to a table of six… He’s obviously a boss at his job. I greatly enjoyed my lamb vindaloo, which was surprisingly spicy. My husband’s chicken hyderabadi was a bit disappointing, as the chicken and sauce wasn’t very flavorful. The portion sizes are just right but definitely not anything generous. I wish there were a couple more pieces of lamb in my meal. The basmati rice on the side was delicious and the garlic naan was perfect. I’d definitely come back here for a meal but probably stick to their excellent vindaloo.

Ate here with a friend. Food was really good and the service was exceptional. I had the non-vegetarian thali. Lots of tasty food. I will be coming back.

I was here for lunch buffet. I almost tried most of the items. Food items tasted good. My special mention goes to chicken 65, goat biryani, vada. Cutlet, kichadi and curries, rasam were also good. They have dosa in buffet which is a good option but dosa should be taken when its hot. If they serve that to tables when needed it will be good. Naan and bhature were hard. The atmosphere can be even made better.

I’ve been to pretty much all the Indian restaurants around the Ann Arbor area, and this one is my favorite. Easy to get to, and close by to both theaters so you can have a dinner and a movie/event. Tried a few great options on the menu and enjoyed every one of them, the chair tea is also great here. Just a well rounded Indian restaurant, enjoy!

If you’re anything like me, when the Indian food craving hits, there’s no denying it. You must give into the siren’s song and follow your tummy to the spicy epicenter of epicurean delights: Madras Masala. Madras Masala is a small restaurant nestled in the underbelly of the Maynard Street Parking Structure, directly in front of the Maynard Street entrance to Nickels Arcade. Quiet on weeknights and bustling during lunch and weekends, Madras Masala will offer prompt, courteous service, fantastic value, and the tastiest paneer kulcha you can find. The vegetarian thali is not to be missed. Think of it as chef’s choice, you’ll get a wide selection of sauces, curries, kofta, a sweet dish or two, a big crispy dosa, and basmati rice. It’s more than enough food for two people. Get it with an order of naan and eat your heart out. The naan is tender and flavorful and the aforementioned paneer kulcha is a soft grilled tandoori flatbread filled with Indian farmer’s cheese(paneer). It’s sinfully good. Service is friendly and quick. Their mango lassi is bright, tangy, and refreshing. Delicious.

The staff here is so nice! When our waiter came over for our order and we were as usual being indecisive, he said«okay, I’ll come back tomorrow morning.» Quite the jokester. Well, eventually we made several choices and got the chicken biryani, mushroom curry, baigan bartha(eggplant curry), lamb saag, and of course a basket of naan. The curries come with plain basmati rice. Surprisingly, the mushroom curry seemed to be the biggest hit of the night, maybe because the creaminess of the curry balanced the spiciness of the variety dishes well. We got the medium spice level overall, which was tolerable to me. The three of us left a bit of leftovers, perhaps enough for a one-bowl lunch the next day. It was 9-something in the evening at the end of the meal, and another waiter brought over a free dessert while we were paying our bill which turned out to be about $ 15 per person. I forget what it was called, but it was a sweet white pudding with short vermicelli noodles. Even though it was probably near their closing time, they were very patient and did not make me feel rushed to leave at all. The lunch buffet sounds like a really good deal. I would give Madras Masala five stars for a combination of flavorful food and friendly service, if only each dish were a few dollars cheaper.
