Went to Old Siam for the first time for lunch after a busy day of shopping. What a disappointment. Having eaten in a number of thai restaurants I do know and appreciate the cuisine. They should be ashamed of themselves. We were greeted by the owner who told us he was closing in 15 min, we asked if we should leave and he stated«order quickly». Since we were hungry we decided to comply. We both ordered #2 lunch combo fried shrimp with vegetable fried rice, pad thai and a cup of salad. Words cannot accurately describe how awful the food was, the rice was dry, old and burnt. The pad thai was tasteless, and burnt, the two shrimp and spring roll were placed in a cup and bottled sweet chili sauce was poured over. No respectable chef/owner would serve this food too anyone. Old Siam you made it very clear that you do not enjoy the restaurant business, I will never return too your restaurant. The one star is for the dining room which was clean.

Consistently good flavors. I come here at least once a month even though I live 2 hrs away. Our favorites — shrimp pad thai, chicken and shrimp with green beans in galanga sauce, fish or tofu in chili sauce with broccoli.

We waited an hour for our food and we had a small order of pad Thai, drunken noodles and crab Rangoon. I ordered the pad Thai and it was very underwhelming to say the least. Absolutely no flavor and looked rather«thrown together.» It had zero hint of the taste of peanut and the vegetables were few and far between. I would NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone.

This is the best Thai food in Ann Arbor since the 1980’s. Their signiature dish is the shrimp with sweet chili paste and broccoli. The sauce is unique and excellent. Nua Katha, sizzling beef is excellent and not especially spicy. It comes with a refreshing salad that is a good compliment, but only ordinary. Other stand outs include chicken with cashews, and chicken with basil. The latter is very hot.

After living in BKK for most of 2012, I decided to try as many Michigan Thai places as I could. The food here isn’t that great, but it’s also not that bad. I’d call it ‘distinctly mediocre’, and pretty consistently. The service and ambience are both just fine, but it stops mattering when the food can’t hit that third star…

The food is pretty good. Prices are ridiculous. I got Pad Thai with Shrimp. There were three shrimp that came with it and it was almost $ 17. I think the ingredients probably cost about $ 2.50. In addition, if you ask for a small cup of the orange sauce to add to the Pad Thai, they charge $ 1.50 or $ 2.00 for what probably amounts to two to three tablespoons. The food is fine but it’s not that good. I don’t go there any longer.

My favorite dining experiences at this restaurant date back longer than I care to remember, when I tried Thai food for the first time. I have since tried Thai food around the nation, during wider travels, and in Thailand. While the best Thai food is understandably what I found in Thailand, and I’ve has some excellent Thai food in big cities, this restaurant has matched or exceeded the quality of food at the overwhelming majority of Thai restaurants where I have dined. The restaurant has some practices that, although commonplace in Thai restaurants, may seem odd to diners. Some things you might expect to be included in the price of the meal are add-ons. I would personally treat extra rice more like a second serving of bread at a typical restaurant — no extra charge. As exotic ingredients have become more easily available, I would love to see an effort to freshen the menu and bring some additional Thai flavors into the mix. I would also like to see some additional cooking methods, such as grilling. I would also improve the lunch menu, which could use a bit more attention to the details.

what a great place and food. Most places don’t hold a candle to this.

When I order Thai food, I go for spicy and exotic, because you can get ordinary, fairly bland, frozen Thai food at grocery stores nowadays. What’s the point of ordering pad thai at a Thai restaurant? I ordered chicken phad prig kee-noo, which is one of their spiciest dishes. Don’t order this unless you really like spicy, and even if you do don’t ask for it any spicier because it would spoil the taste. Having said that, my dish was 5 stars. For Ann Arbor, the price was right. Restaurants are generally way too expensive here. My meal was about $ 13 with tax and I left a generous tip. I see one bad review, and they ordered pad thai. If you want pad thai get it frozen at Kroger and microwave it. If you want something that you’ll actually enjoy, order a dish that you’ve never had before and go one level of spice higher than you’re tried before.

This place is one of my favorites! I usually get the #57. Phad Prig Haeng. Very good dish. The staff is alway nice, if not a bit quiet. The place is a bit cramped, but I can overlook that for the food. My only gripe is that they seem to have strange hours sometimes.

I love this place. Returned here after several years of wanting to go back(haven’t been in the area and it’s closed on Mondays). Definitely went too long without this awesome food! We had the 29. Phad Woon-sen(Bean thread noodle stir-fried with jumbo shrimps, onion, cherry tomato and egg.)$ 14.75…it was awesome! Fresh, plump shrimp tasting like they just came from the ocean… and I LOVE a thin, glass noodle, which was pretty great here and the egg and tomato added to this make it suuuper yummy! I would say a bit pricey but, definitely fantastic! Also, had a wonderfully refreshing coconut tapioca pudding that was rather odd(watery) but, had great flavor and textures!

We tried the Old Siam for the first time tonight and were disappointed. The appetizers and 3 out of 4 dishes were good, but the fourth was terrible. The Pad Thai was very bland and tasteless and the chicken was burnt. Then the service was terrible. The waitress insisted that the dish was great and authentic to Thailand, but we’ve eaten Pad Thai from a variety of restaurants in the US, Europe and Asia. This was the only Pad Thai that lacked any flavor. Eventually, and after quite a bit of arguing, they grudgingly took the dish back, but by that time our dining experience was ruined.

Good friendly service and portions. I had the Drunken Noodle and it was a good amount of heat and flavor. We also had some tea and a sampler of several dishes. Some were excellent and some were pretty good but just not my style. I have been meaning to come back here for some time.

I had shrimp pad Thai and it was tasty. The noodles were a little on the slimy side. The portion was decent, but I would’ve liked more shrimp. There were only a few pieces. The seafood hot and sour soup was very tasty, but again, hardly any seafood. I had one shrimp in the whole bowl. The place was pretty empty when we went in, but all in all the food and service were pretty good.

It was fine, but I won’t eat here again. I just ordered the #49. which is essentially veggie and chicken stir-fry. It didn’t have a lot of flavor and was very oily. I could go for more veggies too; I tried to order the #50 and add chicken since it sounded like more veggies but they told me no because that dish is vegetarian only. My friend got the #67 shrimp fried rice, and although there was plenty of shrimp, she said it was very fatty and oily. My other friend got the #38 green curry and said it was a 7 out of 10.

Like a turd in a urinal, The Old Siam invites curiosity but ultimately disappoints. The atmosphere was pleasant enough and the service tolerably bland, but Old Siam gets one star for a reason. This would be because of the food, which was flavorless, tired, and greasy. We both had noodle dishes(phad see eeuw, emphasis on the eeeeuuuuwww, and phad thai with tofu), preceded by an order of Tofu Tod(fried tofu with sweet/nutty dippin’ sauce). Neither of us was impressed by what we ate. So I ask you, chefs of Old Siam, where are the fresh ingredients that make Thai food so irresistible? Where is the brightness of fresh lime and cilantro? Where are the tantalizing aromas of coconut milk and peanuts, or the pungent saltiness of fish sauce? Where are the chilis and spices that warm the soul? Why would we want to eat here again? Please, prospective Thai food restaurateurs, bring something worth eating to the west side of Ann Arbor!

We came here as a large group(maybe a dozen) for lunch a couple of weeks ago, and I was very excited; anything Thai is a win in my book. So I was sad to be underwhelmed by The Old Siam. I ended up getting a lunch combo, and felt that the actual meat of the meal(in this case, well, actual meat) was woefully skimpy. And then the stuff that’s cheaper for them – like starches – was given in plenty. So it just felt kind of cheap. The taste was eh. Nothing to Unilocal home about. The Thai food in Ann Arbor is generally okay, which is to say, it’s still not great… but places like Siam Square and Marnee Thai do a much better job. More food, bolder flavor, nicer ambiance.

Not only the worst thai food I’ve ever had, but quite possibly the worst food and overall dining experience I’ve ever encountered. The pad thai was a pile of grease with no flavor to it at all. Sriracha sauce, the savior of crappy food, is $ 1.50 for a little dish. It’s as if they realize their food is awful and know they can make a profit off of my vain attempts to make it not suck. The service was slow, terse and rude. We really felt like they couldn’t wait to get us out of there. We didn’t even take our leftovers home. I couldn’t justify subjecting my dogs to it, and they eat their own feces.

Stopped in here for lunch, and I have to say, I was pleased with the experience. The service was very warm & friendly, and our water glasses were frequently filled. The bf & I both got lunch special A($ 7.25 for a decent, filling amount of food), which came with pad thai, a crispy spring roll, fried rice, a side salad, sweet chili sauce, and some beef & onion dish(phaenang nuea? can’t remember the name). I dipped the spring roll in the chili sauce and poured the rest over the salad. Nothing was too greasy, and I was pleased with the flavors, although I would have liked the option of making things spicier. My one complaint: The lunch menu is not so extensive and I was hoping to get something spicy. I only saw one 4-star(spiciest) dish and just wasn’t feeling it. Maybe the dinner menu has more options.

This review is solely based on a take-out order of Roasted duck red curry and a tofu and broccoli dish that I can’t manage to find the name of on the online menu. The two dishes together with two accompanying boxes of rice rounded out to over $ 30, which is not okay. The flavor of the dishes themselves were not bad, but not spectacular enough to charge at least $ 4 – 5 more than competitors either. We happened to have picked up another take-out dish from another Thai place that same night(for only $ 12, mind you), so with an experimental control, I can objectively say: the portions here were really small, which I definitely do not understand given the prices.
