Vahan’s Clothing And Tailoring

Vahan was third tailor I went to, figuring that at 10:15am on a Tuesday, most reputable businesses should be open. And the first to be open. We had some simple alterations. He was friendly and helpful and accommodated us thoughtfully and on time. A little pricey. He has very nice clothing on the racks. If I was looking for something nice. I’d go back.

I have been buying suits from Vahan for myself and my family for many years. The reason is that he is the real deal – an old country tailor. He grew up making custom suits from scratch for people. He has a skill set that will be nearly impossible to find here in America once his generation passes from the scene. He can tailor or alter any article of men’s clothing – and it comes out perfect every time. I cannot comment on women’s clothing. Most suit coats do not fit me off the rack, I always end up with a large roll across the shoulders and top of the back. This requires a tailor to take the jacket apart, lower the collar, and reassemble the jacket. I have never had a good experience with the tailors at any of the suit or department stores. They are OK for basic alterations but they have always butchered this sort of alteration. Vahan is able to fit me perfectly without any difficulty. His prices are a bit higher but for me they are worth it. The suits he sells are well made what I would call classic designs, so this is not the place if you are looking for bleeding edge style.
I recently stopped by his store and bought another suit, not because I really needed it, but because soon Vahan will be 80 years old. Though he seems to keep on working like the Energizer Bunny, no one can keep going forever. Honestly, once he retires I have no idea who I will be able to find to tailor my suits so that they really fit me. Go see him while he is still around!

Had a coat tailored to improve the boxy fit. It was expensive but I’m very pleased with the result. I’ve tried two other places in Ann Arbor and would only go back to Vahan. However, whoever spoke to me on the phone (not Vahan) should be fired. Very rude.

I have had nothing but great experiences with Vahan. I have been going there for years and have had him tailor many suits. He has repaired several pairs of jeans for me as well. I am always happy with the results. He is a master of the art of tailoring with great attention to detail and high standards. Highly recommended.

While I think Vahan is a nice guy, I think he is WAY to expensive for no better than he is. There have also been times I was told to come back for certain things because he was too busy. I understand and can respect that, but I was told to come back on days when he was on vacation. That happened TWICE.

I bought a MTM (made-​to-​measure) suit online that offered a tailoring credit for minor alterations. I’ve never been to a tailor before, so I brought it to Vahan’s because Unilocal said so. It was a mistake. I regret it.
I’m not sure if Vahan (who was kind-​er) or his assistant George (who was mean-​er) were offended by the fact that I bought a suit using the Internet or that it was a more modern and slim style, but they hassled me about both, and not in a paternalistic «I know a lot about suits» kind of way, but in a racist, «now you’ve made me uncomfortable» kind of way. As in, George yells at me, «You’re in America now, you should buy American.» Excuse me? I might not be white, but I’ve always been «in America.» I was born in Illinois. And where do you think Italian suits come from?
End of story, the suit jacket needed to be sent back, but the pants could have been hemmed here. Too bad. I chose to take my $ 75 tailoring credit to somewhere that doesn’t racially profile me. The only reason I’m giving them a second star is because I have no idea how they are at altering clothes. they might sew like a boss, but after this, I just don’t care.

I did try to get them to fix the suit (receipt handy) but no dice. I took it to a few other tailors and they couldn’t fix it. So basically, Vahan’s ruined it.
Maybe they’re good for men’s suits — I don’t want to make any assumptions here — but for a woman’s body, I would say they don’t have the knowledge.

Vahan is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met. With Buddha-​esque simplicity, the man radiates a gentle happiness that infuses the store with an amber glow. The ol’ creak of the door, rich smell of the wood, and rows of thick suits creates a heady experience.
I’ve been going to Vahan’s since I was a small child, when I would accompany a parent or two who needed something tailored or wanted to peruse the luxurious bounty. Lest you think the only appeal is Vahan’s customer service, be aware that the man’s tailoring skills are advanced enough to border on the paranormal.
One of the greatest institutions Ann Arbor has left. Long live Vahan!

Vahan is the man. He is super quick but performs excellent work with much attention to detail. He knows classic styles but understands how to marry that with modern trends. When he’s done with your clothes you will see the difference and feel like a million bucks.
If you purchase a suit from him, the quoted price includes all tailoring work to be done once you get fitted for it. Legend.

Vahan’s is owned by a great man who knows his suits. He provides excellent, personal customer service with a selection of all price ranges. This is a much better place to go to than the suit place in Nickel’s Arcade.
They also offer alterations, which is why I had to come here once. My date needed his pants taken in. We were attracted by the house it is located in and the homey atmosphere when you walk in the door — you are greeted with a beautiful wooden staircase. It is very comfortable atmosphere to try on some suits.
