First time going: Ordered take out & found a metal staple(from a stapler) *IN* the spicy tuna roll… Not sure how that«happened»… Thank goodness, I caught it! If you go here, Check your food thoroughly. I can’t say I had a positive experience for that reason; And, am really perplexed as to how this occurred in the first place.

Our favorite sushi spot. Outstanding restaurant run by wonderful, talented people. My husband and I are regulars and bring in family and friends whenever we can to share the experience. Order the omakase and let Cheng wow you with his skills – you won’t be sorry!

This is some of the freshest fish I have eaten in a while. I’ve been quite disappointed with the sushi around this area. The chicken katsu they make is absolutely tremendous. The cut of meat they serve you is tender, thin and perfectly breaded. The server I had was extremely friendly and attentive and even the chef came out to speak with us to see how we liked our meal. I think it’s a small family-owned place. Everything was clean, tidy, and they have a fairly large selection of Asian imported beer. The appetizer servings were generously large. The sushi was sliced to just the appropriate size and just the right amount of rice placed underneath. Also the rice quality was up to snuff. I will definitely be going back, especially to try their other cooked entrees. I just ate there last night and I can’t stop thinking about the chicken katsu.

This place is excellent, and they get more bonus points for delivering. I have never been disappointed and their service is great as well. I order here all the time and everyone in my office loves it.

Edit: Under new ownership/management now. A lot of the older reviews aren’t relevant anymore but Unilocal has kept them despite the change. This is my local sushi place and also my favorite in Annapolis. I’ve been to all in the city, and also many places in New York City, and this is my favorite. The fish is so tasty and fresh. The staff is amazing. They are very friendly and talkative if you want to chat with them. I really recommend sitting at the sushi bar and engaging with them. You can’t go wrong with the omakase. The chef will serve you select rolls and sushi pieces which are all amazing. See my photos for an example!

Love the Angry Dragon Roll! Yummy fresh sushi. Tried the lemongrass soup & loved that as well. Everyone is super nice. Prices are very reasonable. We will definitely be back.

Overall decent! I got it delivered and they sent me an email that it should be delivered between 45 and 60 mins. It showed up around 55mins warm and pretty tasty! The chicken katsu was good! A little colder than I thought it could be, but overall good! The salad was iceberg lettuce and a tomato, which was a little weird, but I just didn’t eat it. The miso soup was pretty standard, as was the edamame!

I want to preface this review by saying that my family and I have been ordering from matsu for the past two years or so. Their quality has always been fantastic but seemed to fall really short tonight which is unfortunate because it is Christmas Eve. My main complaint is that our pieces of sashimi were so small! Probably about half the size of what it should have been for the industry standard and what we would have expected from matsu. The wait staff was kind and gave us a free salad while we were waiting but that didn’t make up for the tiny pieces of sashimi we received. We also always tipped them well! We usually do. Not sure if they are under new management or what the problem is but they might have lost our business.

Best Sushi in a long time! Fresh, great service and a free on the house appetizer! Did I mention fresh?! New creative rolls. I’m allergic to shellfish and have trouble eating sushi due to cross contamination but had no reaction here. Husband and wife owned. They took great pride in watching us eat and rave about the food. We will definitely return and spread the word! They also have carry out, perfect!

If your looking for SUSHI, I recommend this place. It is perfect for what it is. This is not a fancy sushi joint. Its simple, but that’s OK. In fact, Annapolis has a couple of fusion or fancy over priced sushi joints, its good that we have Matsu too. Matsu is a no frills sushi restaurant with good sushi sashimi and sushi. Special pros: They daily get in special items, some of which I rarely see on sushi menu’s around here. For example, recently we had giant see scallop served in the shell between delicate lemon slices. Another day they had some lovely tuna belly in. The woman who runs the front is just about the sweetest person I have ever met! She always makes us(and everyone else) feel special when they walk into the place. Possible cons: I’ve heard that the non-sushi food is just«so so». I can’t speak to it, since I only order sushi, but I’d recommend you stick to the Sushi menu too.

Two stars doesn’t adequately describe this place because there are both positives and negatives about this place. For my visit, I ordered teriyaki chicken and a 5-piece roll of sushi. The sushi came out fantastic! Although I felt that the sushi rice was a little hard, the overall flavor and presentation was pretty good. The teriyaki chicken, though, leaves much to be desired. First, it came with a salad and miso soup. The salad dressing was surprisingly tasteless, which is a first because I’ve never been to a Japanese restaurant that has messed up salad dressing. The miso soup was bland, which leads me to believe that they overcooked the soup and destroyed the flavor. Now onto the main course, the teriyaki chicken. After tasting two bland dishes, I expected the teriyaki chicken to save the day — NOPE. Worst. Teriyaki chicken. Ever. It was essentially just a piece of plain chicken, no seasoning whatsoever, covered in overly gooey and bland teriyaki sauce. The service also had highs and lows. I waited quite some time before I got my water. This wait was completely unnecessary because the restaurant was only 15% full. However, before I got my water, I was given a warm moist towel to wipe my hands with, so that’s a plus! Unlike the initial wait, food preparation was fairly quick. Bottom line is that this place has ok service and good sushi, but that’s it. All the other food here is overly bland and somewhat disgusting.

Bad service. Ended up leaving when our food didn’t come out after 40 minutes after ordering. We were just about the only ones in there so there’s no reason they should’ve just started making our sushi once we told them we were leaving.

We always go to Matsu when we want good sushi and great service. They do beautiful and intricate designs with the sauces, and they actually care about giving a memorable experience

This restaurant has been a Japanese/Sushi place for a long time through multiple owners. Sometimes it is good, sometimes not. It is currently striving to reach mediocrity. The traditional ginger salad dressing was gritty and tasteless. The sushi lunch is down from six pieces of sushi(and a roll) to four pieces(and a roll). Service is attentive but not added to by the child of an employee or ran about the restaurant. I really don’t want a paper airplane on my table while I’m eating lunch. Pass.

If I could give negative stars I would. I ordered online and I’ve waited over 2 hours for it to be delivered. I understand that when food gets delivered, it can take some time. I am NOT understanding about getting yelled at when I call and ask politely about my order. Since when did it become appropriate for the person on the phone to rip my head off and yell at me, telling me that I need to just suck it up because they are busy. Not only was the woman extremely rude, but she failed to provide any answer to my question of, «where was my order?» Then she hung up on me. I have no idea where my food is, it is still not here, & I have no idea if it is going to show up at all. Frankly, I’m afraid to eat it, as sushi is not supposed to sit out for two hours. I will never ever order here again.

If I could put zero stars I would ! Should’ve realized something was up when you walk in a restaurant during lunch hour and no one is there. The food was overpriced and disgusting. The sushi isn’t fresh and shouldn’t even be sold. The spicy tuna literally was so fishy tasting it was sad. there was 1 waitress and 1 cook and they literally took forever. Keep in mind we were the only people there

Not too shabby but not the best. We walked in right at the dinner opening when the sign flipped at 4:30pm. We were presented with a hot hand towel to begin our meal. That was a pleasant added touch to the service. It wasn’t busy but the service is a bit slow, maybe they weren’t expecting customers right at opening and still needed to complete some prep. The shrimp shumai tastes like it was from one of those frozen packages you could buy at H Mart… Not really shumai like the kind you can get at a dim sum restaurant. But you know, I’m at a sushi restaurant, not a dim sum place. The miso soup tastes like any miso soup you would get at a sushi restaurant. The salad was iceberg with a cherry tomato on top and dressing. I didn’t eat the salad. The Philadelphia roll had a tad bit much cream cheese but the California roll was good. The rolls are big, which is good. I had the sushi and sashimi combo. It was presented very nicely. I loved it all… But a few of the sashimi pieces tasted as if it came out of the freezer… Since a part of it was at room temperature and the middle was icy and frozen. The waitress came back to our table towards the end when she noticed we had no water left and offered a refill of water. We declined since we were ready to pay the bill and leave. We were offered coffee candy, a magnet, and a takeout menu. Probably one of the better sushi places I have been to so far in Maryland. Prices are fair. I would consider going back to this establishment.

Great service and food presentation. The young lady at the front was very sweet! I ordered a cucumber roll, California roll and shrimp & vegetable tempura, to go. The sushi was really good and reasonably priced in my opinion. They did forget my spicy mayo! But im not too concerned about that. The shrimp and vegetable tempura was mediocre. Not a huge fan and probably wouldn’t order again. I would definitely come back just for sushi though!

Fresh, delicious, and a friendly staff! I’ll be back! Close to home a plus! And they deliver! Never have had sushi delivered, I believe I’ll dine in, but nice to know it’s an option:

Ordered carryout from Matsu last week. Presentation still very good, even in carryout containers. Big plus having online ordering. Sushi was fresh and did well on the ride home. Prices were what I’d expect. Wouldn’t go out of my way to order/dine-in there again as there are many other local options I prefer in terms of quality/price/uniqueness of offerings.

This is the best sushi I’ve had around here. Service is the best! Not sure what the negative reviews are about but maybe this is a depends on the sushi chef. Word of advice, do not go for sushi on Sundays. Last delivery was Friday.

Sorry mr Howard.T. I forget take to you: Whatever sushi, at room temperature for one night after devolution best drained immediately! Believe me, sushi is part of RTE foods at room temperature, it is easy to breed bacteria! ! ! ! Unless you put a night of sushi the next day put the pot add a little boiling water and eat.. . I work in a sushi bar, sushi at room temperature, put more than four hours after that basically there will be a smell! We usually choose to dismiss does not sell! Otherwise, guests eat bad stomach trouble! Thank you sir! Matsu owner
