Talula’s

Let me preface this by saying I am a former AP local. Ive seen Cookman have some great and not so great places. Market In the Middle days and prior. It doesnt make me an AP snob but I am anxious to try new place to see if they compare or add up to the successes of other places. We took the quick ride yesterday since it was a gorgeous day with Talula’s in mind, pizza.beer.we’re there. We got a seat at the bar, which was totally fine with us. The place was mobbed and there was a baby shower going on — which was super weird being that there is no private room. so pretty much, everyone in the restaurant got to attend the expectant mom’s shower, too. Questionable choice (by the mom, not the restaurant.)
Bartender let us sit there for awhile before taking our drink/​food order. I kept saying. eh maybe she is just having a bad day. I like to give benefit of the doubt. Totally uninterested, not one smile or hint that she was friendly enough to be a bartender in such a busy, hopping place. Again, bad day? Maybe. We ordered a beet salad (delicious) and pizza. Wanted the salad first, obviously. Both came out together. Now, the bar space is small to eat. So… we were super, duper cramped with a pizza plus large bowl of salad, plus our drinks and place settings… we figured it out. (Although, I would recommend sitting at a table if you want to eat your pizza comfortably and save small. smallll plates for the bar area and drink) The pizza, by the way, was good. Drinks were fine, I had something from local brewery Kane and my gf ordered a Laguintas. So, the Laguinitas kicked… somber-​bartender girl asks if she still wants it, or wants whatever the keg would be replaced with (but it wouldnt be another Laguintas keg) so she goes for a can of Carton. Bartender grabs it and a glass and begins pouring. She then puts half the can and glass down in front of us and says ‘sorry that was a shitty pour’ and walks away… sooo the beer wasn’t drinkable for at least 5 – 7 min because of the amount of head that was there, due to said «shitty pour». What the heck, lady?
There is basically one small area to walk to the bathrooms, that same area is used as kind of a lane. to /​from the kitchen so there are people constantly walking back and forth bringing out food/​serving, busing tables and so on. Problem is, it’s only wide enough to fit 1 person. So I was trying to come back from the bathroom and had to back up, find a nook to sort of hide in so the waiter could come through and grab food from the kitchen. Space wise. nice little joint but the layout is completely ridiculous by the bar area.
Atmosphere: cool, trendy, industrial.
Service: uninterested, seemed bored, we shouldn’t have to know you dont feel like being at work
Food: only tried the salad and pizza, both very good though. And loved that they had canned Carton beer. One more thing to add. another waiter/​bartender (not sure which he was, seemed to be doing both jobs.) was handling money, then garnishing drinks with fruit and basil and stuff. Dude, just rinse your hands before doing that.

Don’t be fooled by the high rating of the place: it’s as hipster as it can get. If you are into traditional food, you will struggle to find something edible in the menu, most of the food on the menu is either vegetarian or vegan. And if you find something on the menu suitable for a normal person, they will be out of it (on Sunday at 2PM). Pizza was good though, but one can feel they were trying really hard to ruin it. And don’t ever think about trying their Bloody Mary that apparently everyone is having, it’s one of the worst drinks I have ever had in my life. But if you are a hipster — you’ll be in heaven.
Edit: 5 stars for milk and honey panna cotta

We decided to split the pepperoni and beekeeper’s lament pizzas. The honey worked well with the spicy soppressata, but I found the crust to be too burnt. I wasn’t really digging their tomato sauce or pepperoni either. I’ll be sticking to Coal House in Point, my reliable go-​to pizza place.

Didn’t get the pizza, I don’t know what I got actually but, uhm, mouth-​watering goodness was on my plate (and we were skeptical). So, yeah: Yum. Bye.

Fresh ingredients, delicious pizzas! We tried the best Bloody Mary and it was great– fresh pickled beets and pickle infused vodka! We also tried the shakshuka pizza and the pork kale egg Sammie. Phenomenal! Good service too!

An excellent experience! The waitstaff was attentive and friendly. The menu is unique, and just enough to stretch our food horizons without being over the top. Started with a Gin and Jam –awesome. The beekeepers lament pizza was fantastic and we finished with the Date Cake. It’s a keeper…

This is a great place to find. The food tastes so fresh. The pizzas are so tasty. Really recommend this place to anyone that enjoys good pizza and great fresh ingredients.

We love Talula’s. The beekeeper’s lament pizza is delicious. We always eat at the bar and enjoy talking to Paul and learning about the art of the cocktail. We’ll keep going back.

Definitely a great spot for brunch, lunch or dinner in Asbury. Thoughtfully prepared, well-​executed dishes using local and often times organic ingredients. Neapolitan style pizza was surprisingly excellent. Really well executed. The creamy polenta with the sunny farm egg, halloumi, lime and cilantro oil was seriously amazing. I’ll be back to try the Shakshuka, Sabich, and definitely another one of those pizzas. So why not five stars? I hate to take stars away from a great restaurant on account of the service, but I have no choice this time. The service was so incredibly unfriendly that it was actually rude. I’m guessing she was bothered because someone in our party alerted her to their food allergies. I don’t know, but honestly, I’d can her in a heartbeat if I were running this otherwise delightful eatery.

My hunt for the authentic pizzas got me to this bright and lively spot not far from the coast of Asbury Park & Long Branch/​Bradley beach. Its got a young and communal feel. Their beer list has some bold IPAs and the red wines are decent, a bi star just for those. The pies are authentic and definitely use all locally sourced fresh veggies and cheese. I judge a place by its Margie and this one stands out. The other one we had was the special with the summer squash. Very friendly and quick service.
The ambiance and flavors suggest these guys have strong ties with Razza in Jersey city. Frequently visit them and will definitely drop by for my pie after a long day at the beach) or malls) nearby !

So FREAKIN good! What a great little edition to add to asbury park. The restaurant is super cute and clean. Very chill vibe but the FOOOOODDD!!! Everything was so delicious. Fast service. Great amazing booming flavors. Definitely coming back!

Ok, love the pizza and bread here and would probably give it or ⁴⁄₅ stars on that alone. Good quality ingredients.
Unfortunately though, the service was friendly but unprofessional. Had to wait for long periods of time, not because they were busy, but because the waitress was flirting with her boyfriend in the hallway in between helping her two tables. It’s frustrating when you have to get up to ask for your own check.
Also the $ 11 carrot appetizer was delicious and thoughtful, but severely overpriced for the minuscule amount. Dessert was eh.
I’m going to give it another go soon.

Sometimes you look back at a point in your life and realize what a dummy you were.
Unfortunately unlike in the movies some people don’t ever come to this self realization but at least I did this time!
The pizza at Talula’s was delicious but I didn’t like that the crust was burnt. Little did I know Neapolitan style pizza is supposed to be like that!
I complained to my waitress who told me that is how it’s supposed to be.
I didn’t believe her and I asked if they could just redo the more burnt pizza out of the two since I didn’t want to feed that to my 3 year old.
They decided to take the more burnt pizza out of the two off the bill. Being a nice guy I offered to pay the full bill but the manager came by and reiterated that’s how the pizza is supposed to be but since I wasn’t happy with it they will take it off the bill.
Later when I heard that’s how the pizza is supposed to be I felt kinda bad (and dumb).
The coworker of mine who knows Italian food very well was the one who initially recommended this place to me.
He later also was the one to break the news to me that Neopolitan style pizza is supposed to be burned on the bottom. He just laughed after I told him what happened when I went to Talula’s.
Anyway the taste of both pizzas was very good and the décor and atmosphere of the restaurant was very nice, stylish and clean.
Though neopolitan style pizza isn’t for me, I now recognize that this restaurant does it well.

Although Talula’s is fairly new to Asbury, it has a veteran presence about it. The approach to food taken at the restaurant will help forge Asbury into the future of conscious culinary art. While maintaining a fresh, clean décor, it’s farmhouse feel makes you feel like you’re sitting down to eat at your old Uncle’s house in Lydonville, Vermont. With homemade cheeses ranging from cheddar to vegan mozzarella, it’s limited menu focuses on quality farm-​to-​table offerings, with a focus on their exquisite pizza. I opted for the Beekeepers Lament pizza while my lady opted for a Pulled Pork, Egg, Cheese and Kale Sandwich on homemade Focaccia bread. We paired lunch with the Old Fashioned and Oh Snap cocktails and there was not one part of our $ 50 meal for 2 that fell short. Although we didn’t have dinner, a glance at the menu proved it to be just as impressive as our 2pm offerings.
Talula’s is a solid value lunch and delivers quality that is almost impossible to find in the area. It’s unique approach will ensure it will be a culinary cornerstone for many years to come.

As good as it gets? Absolutely!
Date night and our first time out in Asbury Park. We had late dinner reservations in town and were looking to grab a cocktail and maybe a quick bite.
What a great find. We walked into a full house and were warmly greeted by the staff on our way to the bar.
The atmosphere was warm and inviting, casual and appealing. Simple and modern.
Our bartender Cole was incredibly helpful and a master of the craft. He was able to offer spot on recommendations for some of their craft cocktails based on just a few questions. Their mezcal based selections were amazing with the Don Maguey based The Oaxacan Dead being one of the best drinks I’ve tried all year.
All of the food we saw come out of the open kitchen looked and smelled delicious. We were so tempted by the menu that we had to order the Smoked Trout which came with pickled egg, pickled onion, black garlic aioli and scallions. Divine!
We’re looking forward to coming back. Keep up the great work!

This place just appeared one day on Cookman Avenue and is a real gem. I can only wonder where they got their liquor license since they are quite difficult, and expensive to come by. They have some really great appetizers but their pizzas are the star of the show. While my wife ordered some fresh bread with olive oil/​honey for dipping (this was incredible!) and the soup, Tim and I settled in for a couple of Two Roads DIPA along with a pizza called a Beekeeper’s Lament. Thin crust with plenty of meat with a touch of honey. We each brought some home.
The space is comfortable and user friendly with shared seating at large tables as well as individual tables for couples, etc. the bar has a small, but good selection of craft beers along with a selection of wines and some interesting specialty drinks. Prices are not bad at all. Definitely will return.

Fresh tasty wood fired pizza with great small tap list and plenty of vegetarian options.
We got the mushroom pizza and the rocket pizza. Both were good but I recommend the mushroom as the wild mushrooms almost taste infused into the pizza.
The atmosphere is a relaxed farm/​industrial feel with all locally sourced ingredients and fast friendly service.

First time here for us and it was on a Saturday for brunch. Delicious fare and and nice atmosphere and service. Gives new meaning to the word eclectic — very over the top food combinations with the ingredients local sourced. This place is a big hit with the Asbury crowed and I can see why. Full bar with some interesting drink options. Took an order of apple cider donuts home to sample — WOW!
Bottom line: Reasonable prices for what they provide in terms of food, service and ambience. We will return here again to try some of their other offerings for sure.

Talula’s stands out in overall visual appeal. Just walking in you feel like you are entering a hip city spot for some cool eats. Except you are actually at the beach. Which is better anyway! Service was on point… cool guy who we ran into out and about in Asbury later. Food… I think the Unilocal reviews do not do this place justice. It is a fine dining farm to table place with fresh ingredients and excellent cocktails and desserts. The pizza is all made with in house sourdough crust and it was amazing. The kind of pizza with interesting flavors and always the perfect kick of spice.
DESSERT! We had the blueberry cobbler and the ice cream sandwich. Oh man I would go back just for another bite of each. The sandwich came with a house made raspberry jam that was slurp worthy. I was really impressed with everything about this place.

Wow! Such awesome food! I really enjoyed it all! Came here for a bachelorette dinner so we got a few thinks and shared! Lots of the ingredients are made in house and are organize. Everything tasted light, even the pizza. The sourdough crust was absolutely delicious! We got three pizzas (a pesto one, temple II, and ahhhh I forget) and they were all so good. We also got the palento bowl and a salad that had bacon, avocado, chicken or turkey. I’m so bad with remember the names of all of it! Sorry! But it was soooo good I didn’t want to stop eating.
For dessert we get the blueberry cobbler and ice cream sandwich. A-​M-​A-​Z-​I-​N-​G!!! For drinks I got the state daiquiri which was good, others got the margarita, a lavender drink which was very light and refreshing something else and one asked for a mojito! With all of that and drink split between five people bc we paid for the bachelorette, we paid $ 36 each which is pretty awesome. Our waiter Mike, was awesome as well. Very nice and funny guy! We even saw him after it closed and he remembered us. Great place and definitely recommend trying it out!
