Short lived post Original Mexican Food Deli( ) era, El Jarochito still looms in my mind whenever I walk by. Now an eyebrow threading shop( ), it may seem hard to believe a Mexican spot was once here. A bangin’ Mexican spot no less. It was supposed to be the less divey version of Hidaleo, the predecessor to OMFD as noted above. The place was prime for stardom with a cleaned up interior, bigger delivery range, a larger staff, and a refined menu that didn’t skimp on the quality of the ingredients or bloat he usual price point. As a result, it was a tasty rendition of $ 1 tamales, $ 1.50 tacos, and $ 4 tortas, a far cry from what can be achieved now locally. Then, nearly as quickly as they arrived, they boarded up and closed up shop. It’s understandable that all things aren’t meant to last, but the sudden farewell caught quite a few locals by surprise. I am always hoping for a return somewhere in the borough, especially for places that could’ve used the fanfare and improve the hood’s chances of finding quality Mexican comida.

This place has been boarded up for about three months now :-(I hope its not gone! It was so great over there. I remember it being boarded up last year too, but for much longer. Does anyone know anything about this? I’m assuming it’s just on a break, bc if they closed down someone would have moved into that spot by now.

The first time I walked into this place, three or four Mexican men sat at the food counter and two women were busy at the kitchen. Ah-ha, so this is where they go for home-cooked meals?! The food counter is now gone, and they moved the kitchen around to the front so there are tables and chairs in the back now. Everything is spotless. Unfortunately, most of the dishes have meat in them. That said, their rojos tamales rock… for a $ 1 a piece, how could anyone ask for more?

Very good, authentic Mexican. Not Expensive. And, you can buy ingredients.
