Pleasantly surprised! You never know with Indian food. We got lamb, chicken, and a vegetarian dish. The lamb was very tender, eggplant cooked beautifully, chicken wasn’t as good but still tasty. Owner was efficient and food is responsibly priced. We’ll definitely be back.

The food is very delicious. The food is like home-cooked Indian food.

I might rate this restaurant differently if you picked it up and put it in a more urban environment with more competition. Similarly I would’ve rated it five stars many years ago when it first opened. Alas my love affair has diminished as other culinary options popped up on the scene. That said their navratan korma/veggie Curry is among the best I’ve had. The décor isn’t great, and service is only above par. but they have always treated me well. Other standouts on the menu: the mango lassi, vegetable pakora. This is the only Indian food for many miles around.

Absolutely my favorite lunch place in Athens. Natural, fresh, healthy food. I don’t have a lot of experience eating Indian cuisine so I really like the lunch buffet… fresh salad, love the rice, nan and they always have at least 3 – 5 vegetarian dishes and always 2 meat dishes for the carnivores! The owners are very friendly and the restaurant is family owned.

This review is long overdue. Horrible taste. Food here is nothing like Indian food. It is bland. What’s worse is, they just reuse leftovers from the buffet. I ordered chicken makhni(butter chicken), the chicken was hard and tasted like the tandoori chicken they have for the buffet. Very inconsistent in the taste, although they somehow manage to be consistently bad all the time. Expensive too. Thank god, I don’t have to go there anymore. If there were negative stars, I’d give –100 stars. Only Indian restaurant in a 60 – 90 mile radius, so they think they can get away with anything.

Oh how I wish Athens had a decent Indian restaurant. With any competition this place would be out of business. I’ve given up on the buffet a few years ago. The selection is just really watered down food, mostly sauces with very little veggies or meat in it. Nothing has much flavor and it’s like what’s the cheapest ingredients we can add to this… beans. The owners seem nice, I just wish they would take some pride in serving good food. I’d give it one star but I am glad we have an Indian place.

The fact that there’s an Indian restaurant in Athens, Ohio immediately warrants a minimum of a 3 star rating. This might be the only evidence of civilization in this town. The place is small, dirty, and possibly inside of an abandoned souvenir store. Just the way I like it. If this is the only place nearby not named Columbus that I can get re-heated microwaved naan, then by golly, that’s what I’m going to do.

I just moved this town and I was looking for a Indian food. … this is not Indian food… more like«wanna be» … very disappointed..

All of my reviews are solely intended for visitors seeking vegetarian, vegan, and,(my preference), plant based, whole foods. This is a good choice for vegetarian options. I have only had the buffet and not ordered off the menu, but it fills the bill for a quick lunch where you’re looking for vegan/vegetarian options. Get there early, or they may be out of some of the choices.

The only Indian in a hour plus radius, however that shouldn’t make it OK to not have heat in the winter, skimpy buffet options, and rude owners.

Let’s see… my experience with the watered-down saag paneer, watered-down raita, the waitress coming to our table while still on the phone(?!), and the total lack of ambience make me cringe every time I think of this place. Being the only Indian resto in town, and me being obsessed with Indian food(especially Deccani cuisine), I gave it two more tries. All three times I’ve eaten here have been disappointing. To the owners/chef: PLEASE don’t dumb down your cuisine for what you think is the American palette. You may think you don’t have more customers because people around here aren’t ready for Indian cuisine but, in fact, people don’t often eat there because your food is not fresh or well prepared. Bring the quality up a few notches and you’ll see more customers. Also, improve the interior lighting(the fans you have under the fluorescent lights are not nice), replace that nasty carpet, and play some music inside.

We love the lunch buffet! Indian food made fresh and ready to eat, perfect for a tast, healthy lunch. The service is great and the restaurant is clean!

Generic Indian food, which is probably to be expected in Athens. Not that I can handle what Indians would generally think of as spicy things, I think this place suffers from really watering down its food’s heat to extreme«white people spicy.» It’s family-owned and they’re pretty attentive with service.

This is the only Indian restaurant in Athens, Ohio. The food itself is just decent, similar of what I can get from microwave-able Indian food. Having tried numerous Indian restaurants, I would give this a 2 star rating. With that being said, I bump it up a star without competition in the area. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and a friend got Lamb Vindaloo. The rice was slightly undercooked and dry. There was very little chicken in the curry sauce. And the Garlic Naan not only had to be ordered at an extra cost, but the four slices were overcooked(i.e. more like crackers). The basil/mint dipping sauce wasn’t anything that you couldn’t find in the grocery store. The restaurant itself was small, with about 12 tables. The flavors are nothing short of bland, especially when anticipating strong spices. I got the Indian homemade ice cream with saffron, not blown away. Overall, I was not impressed with the level of Indian food here. But I guess this is the best in Athens :/I paid about $ 20 for this meal, including tip.

I don’t have a lot of experience with Indian cuisine, so I cannot comment on how«authentic» it is. That being said, Star of India is one of my favorite restaurants in Athens. I love the nan, and am a hug fan of the Lamb Palak. The servers, Lovedeep and his wife Balwinder(forgive my phonetic spelling on both), are sweet people, and do a great job! Sometimes, however, I get extra-spicy food when I asked for medium spiciness, and other times it’s hard to get a drink refill since they stay in the kitchen a little too long. But these are minor quibbles! No place makes me feel more satisfied after a meal, than Star of India!

Star of India is probably only a 3-star affair. However, it’s the best(only) Indian restaurant in town so I’m giving it a bonus star. The food is always decent. However, I’ve ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala twice and it tasted different each time. That being said, it was delicious each time and the other dishes I’ve had were pretty good as well. It’s a pretty small place and I’m pretty sure it’s family owned. You might only see your server a few times based on what else they have going on back in the kitchen. The naan is good, and sometimes that’s all I really care about.

Decent Indian food but nothing that stands out. I like the naan but the basil/mint dipping sauce while spicy was bitter and unpleasant. The lamb curry was OK, I got the medium but this was still very mild. The jasmine rice was fragrant and good. The curry was actually better the next day. The restaurant itself is small, about 12 tables. It is a nice change of pace restaurant but dont expect alot of food or to be blown away by the flavors, which is disappointing for this type of restaurant.
