I so wanted this little jewel in downtown Athens to be worth while. But apparently it wasn’t meant to be. The food wasn’t horrible. It was edible for bar food. But the big turn off that will keep me away was the service. The sweet tea was horrible. We had to return it. I kept putting the menus down on the table so I could see and talk to the other people in my party and I bet the waitress came by and stuck them back straight up in the holder six times. In fact we saw her doing that more often than we saw her taking care of anything we needed. Oh well! Too bad that we won’t be back!

First of all… if it’s beer you want, this is a great spot for drinks. The atmosphere inside is also really neat. Nice hang-out near campus. I can see why it’s popular! Not impressed by the bar snacks, which were just so-so, hence the 3-star rating. :-/

ASCUTEASTHEFOODISBAD! The vibe is really cool and coming here must be all about the drinks because the food was a major fail. Let’s start at the beginning: We walk in and see a sign inviting us to seat ourselves so we do. We review the menu and realize that it is very limited because it is a brunch/lunch menu. It is a few minutes before 3pm so we decide to wait for the dinner menu to go into effect. When the dinner menu is delivered, we realize that is is just as limited. We decide to just order the fritattas that come with a side salad. I select the veggie and my husband selects The one that comes with meat. In the mean time, we are delivered semi-cold water with no ice, our waiter is MIA,(but in all fairness, he was so incompetent that it was no difference from having him present). We are eventually delivered cold fritattas. My husband decides to eat his cold and I request to have mine warmed. Since the waiter could not be found, I had a random waitress warm the item for me. When it was returned, it tasted like rubber and had a pungent taste and smell. After taking a couple of bites, I realized that I just couldn’t eat anymore and requested our bill and left. This was the most ridiculous situation ever and I should have left when the waiter disappeared the first time. I am sure that there are better eating options around the square but we had limited options because many places are either still closed for the holidays or closed on Sunday. I would not recommend this restaurant for eating and would advise you to make a better choice than we did.

Love coming here, it’s always a laid back environment. Friendly staff, but sometimes table service is a bit slow but the bartenders are always quick and attentive. The crowd is a mixed age group, and seems suitable for all types of people!

Good for drinks, not for the food or service. They always have English and German beers on tap and have a wide selection of exotic bottled beers. I’m not a Scotch drinker, but they have a wide selection available — including a Scotch flight for tasting. They also have a decent wine selection. The food quality is marginal and the service is on the slow side, but the thing that irritates me the most is the service attitude. I’ve been in the establishment 10+ times and for 8 of them I got a server who clearly didn’t want to be there. The best approach I’ve found is to eat a nice meal somewhere else and go to the Globe for a night cap.

I wanted so much to like this place but it just didn’t happen. The old-pub décor, the chill atmosphere, even the scotch list– everything was great when you’re looking at it… But when you go to actually have it… Sat at the bar, ordered a beer. It took about 8 minutes to get it. If I was at a table, I’d be cool with that, but I’m sitting right next to the tap… Ok so maybe that’s an anomaly. Then, to test the waters for food first, I ordered a cup of the soup special — which I was told was a «hot and spicy» pepper sausage soup. Great. It takes a little over 15 minutes for someone to ladle the soup into a small cup and bring it out. Not spicy, barely warm, and nothing more than 2 chopped up bits of sausage floating in vegetable broth with a piece of onion or two. Decided to cut my losses. Could’ve been a bad night, or could’ve been indicative of how the pub is managed(perhaps you need to hire an additional person or two?). Either way– it wasn’t worth it to stay and find out.

Beginning to end, worst experience ever. Spoiler alert: Roach in meal… we’ll get to that. I ate outside with friends yesterday(July 16, 2015). The servers never came out to us once. We had to get up and go inside to order everything. We shared vegan chili nachos. The chili was good, but the tortilla chips tasted straight out of the bag. Pretty small plate of food. It was overall eh. My house salad was actually really tasty, and I was happy about it, but came to regret it later. I took to-go a burger with side salad and a lava cake. I tipped about 12% since I basically served myself the whole meal, and I got a nasty look from the«server». I began to fear for my take-out food. I got it home and tried a bite of the lava cake. They had put ice cream on it, which was all melted. Who does that on a to-go order? Also, the cake was almost frozen, and it had no lava in the middle at all. It was so weird. Lava cake is supposed to be warm, with gooey lava in the middle. Not a cold chocolate cake with an empty hole in the middle and a pile of dripping cream liquid on top. I only ate a bite. Then I was nibbling on the burger, when I moved a tomato to the side and found a small, LIVING roach in my salad. That food had gone straight from the restaurant to my very clean hotel room and was tied up in the bag until I started to eat. The roach definitely came from The Globe. I threw out all the food immediately. Today, I went back and asked for a manager. There was no manager on duty— what is up with that? I told a random bartender what happened and said I wanted a refund on everything from the nachos to the take-out. She glared at me and said, «So it was only in the salad but you want a refund on everything?» I said, «YES». Are you kidding me? She was so rude, she didn’t even apologize or seem bothered at all(they must see roaches all the time in the kitchen). Wrote my name on a post-it and said a manager would call me. We’ll see. Every single employee I encountered(and there were about 5 total since I had to keep ordering food from whoever I could find walking by the bar), was totally rude, lazy, and seemed very resentful that I was asking anything of them. Worst service. Roach in meal! No apology. Inconsistent food. DON’T GO. Update: The manager called and was very apologetic and did refund me my money. He said that his staff is new and that he will take care of the pest problem immediately.

Enjoyable dining in downtown Athens. The Thursday special is a great value. $ 7.50 for an entire meal. If you have a big appetite & appreciate home cooking, I’d highly recommend you eat here.

I wish you could rate places separately as a bar and as a restaurant. This is one of my favorite bars in town. Beer prices are great, lots of seating, good location. Unfortunately the food is usually horrible at takes forever to come out. The fries seem frozen out of a bag and the burgers seem extremely low quality. I almost wish they didn’t have food at all so I couldn’t get drunk and order it and then be disappointed.

It took a while to be noticed outside, but once we were the service was good. Taylor was very friendly, chill & super helpful to us, «the out-of-towners». She recommended & made a yummy drink for me called the Orange Blossom. The food we ordered was good, average. It’s the service & level of comfort that makes or breaks places like this and both were top notch.

The Globe reminds me of all things Shakespearean and wonderful. Well, at least the name and the downstairs bar area. I ordered a beer — Leffe Blonde for $ 4(woohoo!) and we made our way upstairs toward the sounds of the crashing music. There were maybe 10 people upstairs, chilling and listening to the band. A few were seated on the plush couches, while others stood around moving to the music. A bartender was tending to the bar upstairs, although the beverage selection seemed smaller. We stood around for a bit, listening to the music and nursing our beers before heading to our next stop. This is definitely not the most rocking place in terms of number of people, but for the price point and the chill factor, it’s got my vote for a mellow break in the bar hop.

Had lunch here the other day. Service was great and we were glad we could have the dog on the patio. The steak salad was excellent. Veggie plates were average. I wouldn’t order it again.

The Classic Chicken Salad Sandwich was excellent. I attended during the the late lunch hour on a Saturday during the Christmas holiday break of UGA and was expecting a slow day but was surprised to see just the opposite. Lots of families eating and a vibrant yet calm environment. The service was excellent and timely. I would certainly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a nice calm place to eat on a weekend lunch in downtown Athens

Gosh, I love this place. We came after a Georgia game and luckily snagged the giant booth by the front door, where the air conditioner comes through the bench — nice! Amazing beer list, delicious drinks, great service.

Great bar with an excellent happy hour. My husband, friend and I ended up having about 9 beers and with tip it was $ 20! Amazing! Also, the service is super laid back and they’re good about keeping your glass full. I just wish this place could pick up and move here to SoCal so I can enjoy a good pub with great prices and atmosphere.

I did what any good traveler does when I needed a drink and a little snack. I looked around for where the people were. I saw a small crowd in The Globe, I like the look of it so I went for it. I wasn’t disappointed! The rustic-yet-not-overreaching ambience is perfect for the quieter crowd – erudite grad students, and corduroy professors sharing an interesting thought or story over a slow drink. Pleasantly devoid of adrenaline-fueled guzzlers and shouters, The Globe offered a much more laid back and mature atmosphere. I don’t mean that in a bad way – this bar seems to cater those who enjoy imbibing at their leisure. I was marveled to see the wall of scotch stacked like decadent bricks against the bar, adjacent to another wall of wine. We pulled up to a table and draft menu. Not a bad beer selection either; however in a place like this, in a town like Athens I would have expected a bit wider variety. I wouldn’t expect a Bier-Tap-Mega-Garden, but with as many interesting craft beers available, including so many coming from the area, I was a bit surprised to see it under-represented Within an hour, the bar filled up for the dinner rush, I was happy to see a large diverse crowd. It must be a testament to the bar because there were so many people they quickly ran out of room to sit down. The bar is sit-as-you-come, so it’s easy for a place to fill up quickly. After a while, my girlfriend and I decided to order – I like pubs, and I like their fare even more. I would even go so far as to say it’s my favorite. Everything seemed reasonably priced, the fish and chips were reasonably priced – $ 9 instead of a normal $ 13 – 14; my girlfriend’s chicken salad sandwich a moderate $ 9 as well. But when I’m already paying a good price for a good beer or scotch, and I’m willing to settle down for dinner two, I hope that the meal lives up to the price. The fish, a little over-done. The Chicken Salad Sandwich seemed to be on par with a home recipe. They weren’t bad, but I look for wow-factor and the food just wasn’t quite there. None of this is to say I wouldn’t return. I didn’t get to explore the upstairs, nor did I get to try one those amazing-sounding burgers. I’d love to go back to try again, but with so many other places vying for the public’s attention, I hope that this Public House can keep themselves relevant.

We stopped by The Globe for dinner on a fall, non-football Saturday in downtown Athens. Downtown was hopping with UGA students out and about. Nearby Last Resort Grill had a 30-minute wait. The Globe was busy, but had no wait. The restaurant is located on the corner of N. Lumpkin St. and W. Clayton St. It’s got a small enclosed outdoor sidewalk patio which is great for people watching. After a certain time, I want to say 10 or 11pm, the restaurant begins carding and is only open to age 21+ only. I think that’s how the other downtown bars operate too. The Globe is modeled after a traditional European pub. Lots of dark woods throughout and at night, it’s candlelit. The bar itself looks cool and the menu touts«80 beers, 66 wines, and 38 single malts.» The food menu consists of typical pub grub. A few of the non-typical bar foods include tandoori chicken(salad or sandwich) and a croque monsieur(French sandwich). Prices are affordable as most entrees are under $ 10 each. There are also daily food and drink specials. I tried the night’s blackboard special, a jalapeño pepperjack burger, as well as the Alpine burger. Both burgers were $ 9.49 each and utilitized 6-ounce beef patties. The jalapeño pepperjack burger consisted of melted pepperjack cheese, lettuce, tomato, and red onion. The cheese was melted over some other ingredients, which I presume to have been the jalapenos. The burger was mildly spicy. I would’ve preferred more heat because I like spicy food. The Alpine burger had three strips of bacon laid over the beef patty with sauteed mushrooms and melted Swiss cheese on top. It also came with lettuce, tomato, and red onion. Both burgers were OK. Not very memorable, but not bad either. Both burgers came with a pickle spear and a side. I chose a side salad which included mixed greens, shredded carrots, sliced green bell pepper, and chopped tomato. It was fine. My tablemates ordered some of the standard-sized entrees including chicken penne with garlic cream sauce and the fish and chips. The portion sizes were quite big for these dishes and they both looked appetizing. The folks who ate these dishes seemed pretty pleased, so I would go as far as to recommend them. The fish and chips looked particularly filling and appetizing and I wish I had gone that route. Service was good. We parked at metered parking one block east on N. Lumpkin St. It was $ 0.75/hour. A good deal when compared to Atlanta. I was told parking is free after 10pm and is free all-day on Sunday.

This place is uhhhh-mazing for brunch. They have $ 5 mimosa or bloody mary special, as well as a banging vegetarian burger. I ordered the BOCA burger which is actually really, really tasty. Prices are also very reasonable. My entrée was just $ 5 and I think my boyfriends was $ 6 or $ 7 for a pretty large portion. Not too shabby. We sat outside which is a decent place for people watching. Our server was outstanding. He came and left at all the right times. He also got my order spot on, alterations and all without a pen and paper. Impressive! We’ll be dining here soon!
