Yes, they are a bit slow, but the food was very good and not so packaged. It felt good to sit down in a real place with real food.

This little unassuming market in cabagetown holds the secret to the best hot dog that I have ever had outside of new york, but maybe even that as well. I went in after I read that they had the best hot dog in Atlanta. To be honest, I did not expect that much, I mean come on it is Atlanta. I ordered from the cointer where there were two people. The man at the counter described the whole menu and even though I was there on a mentioned, I listened to every word. The lady behind the counter fixed the dogs while we all three carried on a great conversation. I was then served. This was no Varsity dog. The casing had a perfect bite and was on a perfectly toasted bun. After downing $ 4 worth of dogs, which was more than enough, I went for the ice cream. Banana cream ice cream is one that I had never had, but was glad I did. It, like the dogs, was perfect. To all that gave this place a poor review, go grab a package of Oscar meyer’s and go to town. If you want a great dog, go here!

The market is back open with lots of local cheese, eggs, veggies, pantry staples, raw milk, sandwiches, and homemade ice cream. The pandan flavored ice cream is super tasty. They said they will be getting King of Pops pops in soon.

Man, their burger just keeps getting better. Also, I’m pretty sure these guys are trying to raise the capital for a wine + beer license — so get a burger for the cause!

I really, really, really wanted to love my hamburger, but I didn’t. The brioche bun was too fussy and the burger quite rare, after confirming I ordered it «well». I sent it back(something I never do) and they threw it on the grill again and charred the pimento cheese-less side, and sent it back medium. For a $ 10 lunch of a burger & tea, this was disappointing. The place is so charming, though… and since the sandwich reviews are good, I’ll def give it another try.

I absolutely LOVE the italian sandwich from the Cabbagetown Market! I swear, it’s the perfect sandwich… I get a craving for one at least once a month. The burgers are great too and they have delicious soups that vary day to day. Plus, if you’re in a hurry you can call ahead and your meal will be waiting for you when you walk in the door… convenient and delicious! In addition to the tasty food, they have lots of crafty items for sale made by local Atlantans. I have to resist my urge to purchase cute things every time I walk in the door(I’m trying to conserve funds… you know, recession and all that). Another thing to note is the special events that they host throughout the year like the pig roasts and Cabbagetown reunion weekend. Always a fun time and a great way to mingle in the neighborhood. Overall, the market is definitely worth checking out for the great food and the unique ambiance.

Oh this place is so gross I would never come back here again. Im not even sure how it got so many good reviews. This is not just some random grumbling where I was in a bad mood and took it out on the restaurant. In fact, I left the place down the street to come here because I thought I had the feeling it would be good. You walk through the door and your in a tiny old school store. And usually that would be pretty good and I was getting pretty jazzed up about it. Strolling up to the cash register passing the small bar I see me and my friend are the only people in the joint but I wasn’t to worried, I mean this place can’t always have people. I got this dead stare from behind the cash register as I ask if we could sit at the bar. I should hope we could sit at the bar because there is only one table in the whole place. But the lady behind the registers response goes something along the lines of «well yeah… but you can order here… but I GUESS… I can take your order over there» all five feet away. I politely said no and bounced up to her counter so she wont have to move and question her menu scribbled in non readable script on the other side of the room. Whats this kind of quesadilla… she ended up explaining to me, as if i was an idiot, that it was a particular type of spicy sausage quesadilla… well thats funny because the word written on the board actually means stomach lining in spanish. I ask if theres any other kind of quesadilla and again«I GUESS we could make any kind you ask» so I ask for cheese and chicken, plain and simple. They dont serve Chicken! At all! not even crappy chicken tenders in this crappy place. Finally I just get a hot dog because there is now way you can screw that up to much right? WRONG! You sit at the bar after you get your own drink and stare at this dump. Theres old cookbooks everywhere and thats cool, what would be better is if the cook picked one up now and again. The lights over head are supposed to be artsy but it more or less appears to be trash drifting over you while you wait to eat your over greasy food. And the art on the walls was supposed to be hometown grocery store but there is a difference between hometown folk art and art thats been done by a small distracted child. Waiting for my food I spent my time noticing that the food on the counters looked old and crusty and the items on the shelf were random pieces of goods that I wouldnt put into my mouth if I was paid. To busy myself as I waited for our food, which only one woman seemed to be cooking with much clattering yet little to do, I played with a baby roach that decided to crawl towards me on the bar. I had the heeby jeebies all day thinking that one was in my bag or in my coat. When I finally got my food, a plain hot dog and greasy fries, I was amazed to find that yes you can in fact ruin a hot dog. If i had to work my lower jaw to get through old bread and break a dang hot dog then that shouldnt be in my mouth. I finally gave up not even halfway through my hotdog and tossed it down. I did finish the fries though. The place made me so sick that I hardly ate the rest of the day and I just walked out. I would never ever come back to this dump again. The crappy service plus old disgusting food… and the bugs… were enough to make my mind up on that.

I love burgers, but I rarely eat them because I try not to do conventionally raised beef. If I’m going to have to eat conventional meat the burger has to be orgasmically good, and few burgers in this town do that for me. I have been in search of a grass-fed burger for ages, and not only did I find one at Cabbagetown Market, it was delicious. The burger was perfectly cooked, and I loved the combination with the pimento cheese and the brioche bun. If I had to complain about anything it would be the fact that it was a very round burger rather than flat, so it was a bit of a challenge fitting the burger in my mouth. But ask me if I really care — that just meant I had an excuse for looking like a pig as I happily chowed down. I can’t even begin to tell you how happy I am I found a really delicious grass-fed burger in Atlanta. I didn’t care for the fries(which I’m terribly particular about). I like to actually be able to taste potato, and these fries were so thin that once the outsides were crispy(which is also necessary), there wasn’t much left of the fries for there to be soft potato insides(if that makes any sense…) Also, I’ve been trying to find a great sandwich shop since I moved back from New York, and I think this place might just be the place. I’ll let you know.

I tried this place after seeing it on TV. It is a quaint old store that has real nostalgia to it. Beware that there is not much seating: one small table and a snack bar. I had the burger with pimento cheese, and it was delicious. The meat has really good flavor and the bun was wonderful. My husband had to Vietnamese sandwich, which he loved but wished the bread it was served on wasn’t so hard. That’s just his person taste. The sand was served with what looked like ramen noodles, but had a really good Asian flavor instead. Lastly, the third member of our party had the Cuban. He said is was quite good, but the pasta salad was just okay. If I’m in the neighborhood, I would stop in for a snack, but I wouldn’t drive out of my way for it.

A low key place, nicely appropriated with the substance of the halcyon days of yore when people knew their neighbors and you could play on the train tracks and not worry about being run over. Maybe that hasn’t changed, that thing about trains… But this place brings back the conviviality of a different era when baseball was our pastime and sunshine was our reason. They have plenty of sandwiches. Very good. The salami with liptauer cheese on a baguette was amazing.

The Cabbagetown Market is the kind of place that helps define a neighborhood, distinguishing a sterile OTP subdivision from a true neighborhood. It’s an establishment we intown clowns can point to with pride to remind us of why we live where we live. Other reviewers said it better, so I won’t do much more than concur. It’s a small market, filled with some specialty foods(including some stone ground grits that I’ve been meaning to try), some«green» cleaning products and organic, locally grown veggies. There’s a small freezer chest filled with popsicles and Italian ice and it’s always great to watch kids file in to grab a few to buy. You just know that these are the memories that they’ll carry with them when they get older. It’s the grill sandwich counter, though, that keeps people coming back. I’ve had a few sandwiches there, namely the burger with pimento cheese, the muffuletta, and the caprese sandwich(mozzarella, basil and tomato on a baguette.) Though I liked them all, the best of the bunch was the caprese. Specials pop up with daily frequency. Being on Carroll Street, parking is always going to be a challenge. But you’ll manage. Just make sure you’re comfortable with parallel parking, especially with an audience. There’s nothing worse than having everyone in the Carroll Street Café judging your driving ability. The Food Network’s «Diners, Drive-ins and Dives» just recently filmed a segment here which I missed due to work. Wish I could’ve gone if only to tell that Guy dude, «You seem like a nice enough man, but really, your overuse of the phrase ‘off the chain,’ makes me want to punch you in the head.»

I feel like a chump. I somewhat pride myself on knowing all of the nooks and crannies in town and yet I have missed this place 1-mile from my house. After applying my 50 lashes for such an oversight, I am ready to post my review. First, separate from the dining, this place is just cool. A sparsely filled market with a dining counter and interesting books laying about for people to read — such as «The Southern Belly» — the place oozes Cabbagetown pheromones. The groceries that fill the shelves are mostly organic, wholesome, and healthy although there are jumbo Pixie Stix and decadent pastry morsels sprinkled about. And if you need a disposable Bic pen, they’re in a jar behind the counter for 50 cents each. I stopped in and sampled a variety of the prepared fare amidst conversation about Food Network shows taking an interest in the Market and another neighborhood eatery. Anyway, on to the details: Shrimp and Corn Chowder(7⁄10) — good spiciness that has a slow burn on the tongue. The shrimp was a bit sparse, but I was also getting it at 4 in the afternoon so I might have missed the peak density. It was a little thinner than I prefer my chowder, but a nice bowl nonetheless. Grass Fed Cheeseburger(7⁄10) — somehow this rating seems low because it was a very good quality burger that was actually cooked medium — the way I asked. It is smaller than most burgers you will find, but I think it is actually a great size. I loaded it up with everything and it was just a really good, solid burger. Fries(7⁄10) — no big deal, but good. Their girth is on the smaller side, but they aren’t shoestring — and they were cooked nice and crisp. Turkey and provolone sandwich(7⁄10) — the deli turkey is cut just a tad thicker than you would expect(nice) and the bread is buttered up and the whole thing toasted. A good little sandwich except that it didn’t come with any other toppings. Next time I’ll ask for some tomatoes — they seem like good people so I’m optimistic I’ll get some. Warning — the toasted bread will totally to a Cap’n Crunch on the roof of your mouth. RATINGS 7 — Tasty — Good food. This is the most basic level of food that you would probably drop back by for sometime.
