On June 20, 2014, the High Museum replaced their Friday Jazz concerts with Friday Night Music Remix. Now in addition to jazz they offer blues, Latin music, bluegrass and other genres on a rotating schedule. The museum revamped it when visitors asked for more variety. The event is free for members of the High and is also free to all visitors with half-price admission to the museum. My friend is a member and she asked me to be her plus one for Friday Night Music Remix at the High. I first attended the event a couple years ago with friends from out of town and was happy to return. By the time we got there, the jazz band was playing and all of the tables were occupied. There was only seating for about 100 and there were more people were standing than sitting. After a few minutes we went upstairs to walk through the exhibits to a soundtrack of jazz. I really like the concept – enjoying music, sipping drinks and exploring the art exhibits. It’s a very diverse crowd too in terms of race and age…20-somethings to 60-somethings…tourists…groups of friends… and people on dates. Some are there for the jazz and art; others seem more into the cocktails. The dress code is all over the spectrum from sophisticated to casual. Men wear things like polo shirts and khakis or button downs and jeans. Ladies wore everything from jeans, cardigans & heels to maxi dresses & sandals. My one criticism is about the lighting. I wish they would add mood lighting or at least dim the existing lights, something to make the large space feel more intimate. I know it’s not a nightclub but I associate live music with low lighting, not high watt bulbs. Other than that it was a nice event and I plan to return in the next month or two.

I love the High Museum. We are so lucky to live in a city with a GREAT museum that brings in all kinds of well known, awesome work. I just renewed my membership at the High for the 3rd year in a row and it has paid for itself every year. On to Jazz… The High opens its’ doors from 5−10pm on the 3rd Friday of every month with a different Jazz performance. The entire museum is open so you can view any of the permanent work as well as the current exhibit AND listen to some sweet live music. Did I mention that they also have libations for purchase? Im not sure exactly what the ticket price is but if you are a member Friday Jazz is free. Otherwise, it’s like a little bonus to the normal ticket price if your planning to view the latest exhibit anyway. This would be a great date night! Every time I have been the crowd is very diverse. Some people get dressed up, others wear jeans and both seem acceptable. The music is always engaging and sounds great. You can view the museum’s website to find out who the next musician is. FYI, the current exhibit is Frida and Diego and it’s fabulous. Check it out!

The High Museum of Art holds Jazz at the High on the third Friday of every month. It’s been going on for years as far as I know. My husband and I have missed very few in the last couple of years. We refer to it as getting high at The High because the cocktails are strong. I enjoy Jazz music but I am not terribly educated about it so my opinion here may be worth less than a bikini in October but it seems to me that the quality of the acts is quite good. The only downside is that the atrium, where the bands are located, seems to kind of swallow the sound. They have several bars located throughout the lower part of the museum and a good menu of wine, beer and specialty cocktails. I like the peach martini and my husband likes either a dirty martini or the pomegranite. Sadly, but understandably, you can’t take your cocktail in the galleries with you but still a slight buzz may induce previously unexperienced moments of art related enlightenment! They have food for sale as well and it’s pretty good. For something served basically cafeteria style it’s quite good. They have a couple of hot entrees, a couple of sandwiches, some cheese and fruit combos and some pretty good looking desserts(although I have not given in yet). All the galleries are open and sometimes they have a live model you can sketch(they provide a sketch pad and pencil). I’ve actually started noticing regulars there including one very friendly gentleman that is always on the dance floor. Anyway, it’s a fun way to spend a Friday night. Maybe I’ll see you there. I’m the slightly buzzed girl making out with her cute husband!
