The woman running the show at Royal Alteration is friendly and lively, which inspired confidence on my first visit, but declined after she called me the day before my items were to be ready to say she’d have to push back the pick-​up date by a week. She told me later that she had to postpone because her alterations assistant was sick and for the (legitimate) ice storm that came through the city and shut everything down. Like I said, though, she hadn’t give me the reason at the time of the call. However, it wasn’t too big of a deal, things happen. When I came back two weeks after dropping my items off, my items still were not ready! They had been forgotten! The lady promised that they would be ready the next day, but you know how annoying it can be to drive through town to redo errands. When I finally had time to stop by and pick up the items, they were altered as requested, and I was given a $ 5 off discount from the quoted price.
The quality of the skirt I had taken in was just fine. The t-​shirt I had taken in, though, was definitely now that I expected. Like with other shirts I’ve had taken in, I though that I’d just get a smaller shirt when I returned, but actually the shirt hadn’t been cut at all, it just had new seams sewn in, in addition to the original seams. Basically, now there’s a wide section of fabric on the inside of my shirt along all the seams she altered. Maybe the shop has a specialty? Perhaps they do best with skirts or something else?
Sure, freak ice storms make businesses have to adjust, but I thought it unprofessional that I wasn’t given much of a reason for having to postpone my order besides «I can’t stay late today,» that my items were then forgotten, and then the way my shirt was sewn was not my cup of tea. I hate giving poor reviews for friendly people, but I would not recommend Royal Alteration to any friend of mine. =/​I wish I didn’t have such a poor first experience, because I will not be returning to give them a second chance.

This place is great!
I took a pair of beloved motocross style jeans in that i’ve had for 7 years. I need holes and tears patched, and Royal Alterations worked a miracle. Competitively priced, the lovely lady here reinforced the wear and tear with scrap denim in a way that I’m certain it won’t tear again (now I just need to do my part and lay off the Ben & Jerrys).
For context, I’ve actually tried 3 other alterations locations in town — buckhead and a couple in the old fourth ward/​midtown area. After being underwhelmed with late alterations, improper tapering jobs and more, I FINALLY feel that I have found someone that i can trust with my clothing.
I will continue to bring my business to Royal Alterations, and can’t think of a better business. Extremely friendly, always on time and flexible. A++

So when I went to go pick it up on the day that I’m supposed to pick it up, it wasn’t ready so she did it on the spot.
I came in because one of my leg sleeves hems came undone because it wasn’t ready she re-​hemmed the other leg for free. Not a bad trade off.

I must say that I’ve never been more anxious for Monday to come. I recently picked up 5 slacks and a sport coat from here and the lengths and fit is perfect. The family running this place is extremely friendly and they are efficient. It took a week and everything was perfect upon pick up. I’ll be going back every chance I get to more stuff altered!

My friend amy have been a loyal customer at this place for almost 15 years now and she’s very particular so this place must be great right? I decided to bring in 2 suits and 2 coats on 2÷12÷2013 and the owner promised to get it done within 10 days. When I came back to pick up my stuff (14 days later) she told me «I sorry, I forgot about your clothes»…wow seriously? That made me feel so important. NOT!
The owner then promised that it would be done in 5 days so I came back 10 days later and she was like «Ahahaha, I sorry I forgot again… I don’t know what about you that make me so forgetful… ahahaha». WHAT? SERIOUSLY? Why would anyone say that to their customers?
I have more patients than most doctors so I decide to give her more time but this time I learned my lesson and give her 30 days adnd call the place before making the trip down to there. When I came to pick up my stuff she gave me my 2 suits and said that she didnt have time to fix my 2 coats because it was near prom season and she figure I didnt need my coat until the winter. She then ask me to give her another week… I said OK.
I decide to call to see if my coats are done, today is 8/16/2013…yes it was more than 6 months ago that I drop off my clothes and she said that she have not started on it yet but will have it done by Tuesday of next week. Even if she’s the best alteration lady in town (which she is not… I found a better person) the fact that she’s super flaky and unrelieable make it not worth it. If you want to get your alteration done on time… this is not the place to go.
So NO THANKS… please do not waste your time and gas by bringing your clothes to this place.

It’s hard to find a good tailor and I consider myself lucky to have found Laura at Royal Alteration. It’s been over four years since I posted my original review for this shop and I have remained a loyal customer all these years and then some.
The business is growing. She has added staff and now tailors clothing and accessories for a very prominent music band based in Atlanta. In addition, some of her clients include local professional athletes. Because she is busier, her turnaround time isn’t as quick as it used to be. I used to be able to pick up stuff in just a week, but now it sometimes takes longer. I try to plan ahead when bringing clothing to her, so I won’t be in a rush.
As mentioned previously, I have taken various articles of clothing here including work pants, jeans, shorts, dress shirts (the long sleeve, button-​up kind), and a jacket. She has done great work on everything.
If you are having jeans shortened, she can preserve the original bottom hem of the jeans at your request. I recommend it – it looks much better that way.
Where I think Laura really works her magic is on dress shirts. She tailors them to fit, however you prefer, in the sleeve, at the sides, and lengthwise. She even maintains the original curves at the bottom of the shirt. I love my dress shirts after she is done with them. They aren’t too baggy or poofy anymore and they look nice and neat, tucked in or out.
I have run into a few instances where the work wasn’t perfect (e.g. the arm holes were too snug), so I took the clothes back to the shop, tried them on and pointed out the problem areas to Laura. She fixed them for me free of charge.
Overall, I have been very pleased. She is an excellent tailor and I cannot recommend her enough.

I discovered Royal Alteration in 2003 when I needed an expensive, formal, mermaid-​shaped dress tailored. She did such a phenomenal job that I was soon bringing her every piece of clothing that didn’t flatter my figure, including fleece pullovers and boxy silk blouses. Yeah, I know, who cinches the waist on a fleece pullover?! Me, LOL.
They’ve been been open for 13 years now and I’m still a loyal customer. Even though I moved to San Francisco and now just moved again to Ann Arbor, it never crosses my mind to find another alteration place. I save everything I need hemmed and altered in a bag and bring it to Laura (the owner) when I’m visiting family in Atlanta. At her suggestion, I now drop off my pile of clothes and have her mail it to me when she’s done. Apparently I’m not the only loyal customer who has moved away from Atlanta, which is just a testament to her quality of work.
