I was hoping for better. I went in curious, and with an open mind, but came out with a half gallon of milk just to be polite. Poorly lit, poorly stocked, sprinkled with the kind of chachkey crap that no one buys. I cannot speak about the produce, I didn’t bother looking. Sorry, but in order to get my business this store would need to carry better quality products, filter out the junk, and put in all the light bulbs.

Five full stars goes to our local mini market for one reason; the owners are determined to run a neighborhood market FOR the neighborhood. After moving here from Long Island, NY Vicky and Mr Singh(sp?) have grown the store into one that carries fresh produce, a variety of juices, both inexpensive and more quality canned foods, good bacon, fresh meats, and a great beer selection from both national and local purveyors(i.e. Sweetwater). What a difference from the last owners who were nice but obviously didn’t really care about meeting the local’s needs. A couple of years ago the store finally closed due to obvious negligence and the owners final decision to vacate the location and move out of the country. The last few weeks that it was open under the former régime, it became a place that was tough to want to spend your hard earned dollars. The majority of the light bulbs were burned out or fixtures not working making it seem dingy. Several of the coolers were off or non-functional leaving warm drinks. The inventory was obviously dwindling. The final lingering and loitering customers were basically ‘brown-bagging’ it until the locks were on the doors. A few months later I was returning home from work and noticed that the building had been painted. It was very exciting. A couple of days later some lights were on in the building and I stopped and spoke to a young man who said they were rebuilding the location into a new and improved market. He let me in and with eyes gleaming he described how the new store was going to be and that the new owners would be there soon. Shortly after the meeting the store opened. The new couple, mentioned earlier, had either fixed or discarded the coolers and replaced all the bulbs and fixtures making it bright and enjoyable. For the first time I could see the actual color of the floors and the entire place was clean! It has taken a little time and thanks to more and more local customers shopping at SD Market you can not only buy the staples like eggs, bubble gum, cold bottled drinks, and potato chips but you can also now purchase pesto sauces and nice pastas, boutique sodas and beverages(along with normal Coke’s and Pepsi’s of course), some toys, tortillas, and so on. We shop there quite regularly due to a large part of the wonderful couple’s eager and willingness to stock pretty much whatever you would like as a customer. Don’t let the intimidating security bars fool you and no it’s not Kroger. However it’s a store operated by individuals who care about what they are doing and who wants to go to Kroger or any other large box anyway?
