Tech Taco is a new Mexican restaurant that opened recently in the plaza off Hemphill that includes Lucky Buddha, Firehouse Subs, and Sublime Donuts. The restaurant is in a large dining room that used to be part of Lucky Buddha. The old bar has been replaced with the toppings stations characteristic of fast food Mexican restaurants. The restaurant’s offerings are similar to that of Chipotle and Willy’s Mexicana Grill. There are two different types of chicken — adobo, the standard seasoning for these types of places, and sinaloa, which is marinated in orange juice, garlic, and spices. You also can order chipotle pork, cilantro-garlic steak, sinaloa tofu, and a vegetarian option. I ordered a burrito, but you can also order quesadillas, tacos, nachos, or fajitas. I was amused by how the menu is basically Chipotle or Willy’s items in a Chinese takeout menu format. The fajitas can be ordered in combinations of letters or numbers that are usually typical of Chinese takeout entrees. The restaurant is clearly themed for the Tech football crowd. Chips are free. Salsa for the chips can be picked up at the side bar. Overall, the food is at about the level of food served at a chain fast food Mexican restaurant. My main critique is that everything seemed underseasoned. The rice was bland and the sinaloa chicken didn’t have strong flavor. I wouldn’t go out of my way to come here, but it’s decent if you live or work close by. The burrito was very filling at prices comparable to those at Chipotle.
