I had always thought of Days Inn as a low-budget but reliable chain, with some degree of consistency between their locations. Well, not this one. As we were approaching the hotel in our car, I noticed that nearby was a strip mall(no pun intended) with an adult book and video store. At this point, I didn’t mind too much; I just thought it would make for a good story. Little did I know. The hotel building is a 1950s-style motel building with the doors opening to the outside(onto a balcony). However, they have walled everything in, so that now you exit your room into a(flimsily constructed) hallway instead of a balcony. The result is a sort of echo chamber, in which you can hear everything that is happening out in the hallway, or anything anyone in the hotel is saying with their door open, as if it were in your very own room. I don’t think I got any sleep at all in the one night I stayed here. I finally gave up when, at about 8 a.m., a woman staying in the room next door to us was standing outside her door, talking loudly on her cell phone about how she couldn’t find her key in her purse to get into her room… and it was as if she was talking right into my ear. Seriously, if you are staying here you might as well just sleep with your door wide open. We got a nonsmoking room but it had obviously been a smoking room at one time, because of the way it smelled. Also, the weird«hallway» configuration means that your air conditioner/heater vents to the«hallway,» not outside, so the air it’s pulling in is less than fresh. The room was not clean(I found peanuts in the little crevice between mattress and bed frame, and I don’t think this was a complimentary snack). This is minor compared to everything else, but the décor in the room was just so odd – mismatched patterns everywhere, flowers mixed with stripes mixed with plaid. My stay here just really makes me question what standards Days Inn has for its franchisees. Another indication that this was perhaps not the greatest neighborhood: when we were on our way back to the hotel around 1 in the morning, we got lost.(The hotel isn’t the easiest to find from the highway.) We saw a woman out walking by herself… at 1 in the morning… in a deserted area under a dark bridge… and she looked a little out of it, but my friend pulled over anyway to ask if she knew where the Days Inn was. No response, so my friend added, «It’s in Attleboro,» and the woman said, «Attleboro…(long pause) That’s in MA, right?» At this moment, we were either *in* Attleboro or a stone’s throw away, over the line in Pawtucket. That’s when we should have just driven away, but my friend, ever the optimist, started to describe what other businesses were near the hotel. The woman appeared to be thinking, then leaned over and stuck her head *in* the car window(yikes!) and said, very loud and slow with wide ominous eyes: «Be careful, honey. Just be careful.» That’s when we drove away and asked for directions at Dunkin’ Donuts instead. Two stars instead of one because our room did not have any pests(that I saw) and also did not get broken into during our stay.

Go here for $ 75 a night but stay for: — the clumps of hair on the wall of the bathroom — the cigarette butts under your bed in your«non smoking» room — the sound that carries from the hallway Next time, I’ll fork out the extra $ 40 bucks and stay downtown.

I booked a colleague into this hotel for a night while she was in Pawtucket on business. She called me after checking in to tell me that she was checking out IMMEDIATELY and finding another hotel, because the room was filthy and crawling with roaches. Be warned.
