I grew up in the bay area and have always had penchant for Peter’s Bakery burned almond cake. Now living in Roseville I’ve been lucky to have a family member bring me one for birthdays but this year that didn’t happen. Knowing this, my wife began the search for burned almond in or around the Roseville area. She said there is a wedding cake place in Sac that charges an arm and a leg and then Gristmill’s. Not sure about the other place but I have to say that Gristmill’s has made me a fan. To the extent that I had to go back and order another burned almond cake for my wife’s birthday the following month. My only gripe is that this place is way out in the boondocks, at least for me, coming from Roseville. But let me tell you, you won’t be disappointed. The quality, look, smell, and taste of this cake is unmatched and the price… Gristmill’s is the bomb and I’ll be going here for all my birthday cakes from now on.

So I walked in one day and said that I needed a cake made in the shape of a dairy cow’s belly complete with udders. They laughed and said«no problem». I was getting this cake for a desert auction for the Tahoe Cattlemen’s Association. The cake looked amazing and it was the highest selling cake in the fundraiser! Great job, these folks are awesome!!!

Great bakery and deli! We order birthday cakes for friends there regularly. They are always fresh and delicious! My favorite is the white cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream frosting. Check out their Facebook page to see the amazing themed and beautifully decorated cakes. Another favorite of mine is their home made soups with a turkey Rueben sandwich. We’re lucky to have them in the neighborhood!

Best damn croissants around! They aren’t cheap tasting and made with quality ingredients. They come in ham and Swiss and turkey and cheddar. Customer service is good too. :)

Yummy yummy soups and great sandwiches. There cream puffs are so sugary and the whip cream taste like you are eating sweetened coffee creamer way too sweet. It’s like whip cream from back in day when moms would make it so sugary. Now a days that overloaded sugary whip cream just over powers the delicate flavor of the puff pastry which was ok could have been baked a little less had a hard exterior not the Eggy soft puff I’m use to from French cafes in San Francisco Their cookies are great for kids to frost but the other cookies are in need of help. Dry and not anything id serve or even pick up at a pot luck. They have great soups and sandwiches!!! but they need to be realistic with prices and what they are serving unless it’s non gmo organic farm raised meat ingredients which Ive asked are priced higher then the Bay Area marked and delis. I’m mixed on the recommendation. Like I said great soups sandwiches very pricey for the quality and atmosphere and the cookies and puffs need a lot of help. Too bad :/

Love the bakery items, good quality. The drinks are a little pricey. But overall, a very good place. I’ve been coming here for at least 17 years. I do wish they had better hours though.

Dang the staff are hard work! Its not being cheerful that keeps them in business. But the cakes are great. And the bread is better than anywhere else local so they have a fairly captive market.

Go here mostly for the bakery and breakfast. Food and doughnuts are always good. Service is always friendly and fast. I bought a cake here for my sons birthday in December it was the chocolate lovers Boston Cake. Let me say this we are by no means cake lovers in this house we prefer ice cream but that cake was amazing and gone the next day. The best cake I have ever tasted. We will be back for the next birthday cake definitely and can’t wait to try one of their other selections!!!

Gross fake chicken sandwich cost over $ 8 when I asked about the chicken, the lady became very rude and defensive. Told me to go home and make a sandwich.

Great for breakfast or lunch. French bread is unbelievable and warm to the touch in the morning. Lots of coffee selections as well as made to order espresso drinks. I personally like the French Roast best. Watch the«cake show» on the large flat screen to see what kinds of gorgeous and creative cakes Mikki has made. The best part of her cakes is that they are not only beautiful, but are moist and taste amazing! I would know, she made my wedding cake. Everyone loved it so much there were no leftovers! I would recommend their catering too! The owners really appreciate their customers and try to cultivate a family environment. I travel to Grass Valley every year for vacation and I always make a point to visit Gristmill and indulge in some sweet treats. PS: ask them about their frozen cookie bites(amazing on a hot day).

The Burnt Almond cake is our traditional family cake and when I needed one made Mikki stepped up and hit it out of the park! The cake was moist and yummy! If you have never had one you must give it a try!

If you have any allergies, this bakery is not willing to service you. More concerned with bottom line then servicing their customer.

We are very lucky to have a bakery this good in our neck of the woods. Excellent resource for birthdays etc. with very nice cakes. They also have sandwiches and burgers for lunch.

Meh, don’t go out of your way, while there isn’t much in the lake of the pines area I still wouldn’t go back. The place is outdated along with cheap plastic patio furniture chairs for their dining area. The food is ok, nothing great, nothing horrible. There is one rather rude employee who takes you orders who is in desperate need of some customer service training.

I’ve tried baked goods a few times from this bakery because there is nothing else close by and I always think«Maybe the baker was just having a bad day?» NO! The people who run the bakery are crabby and rude. The food tastes like the smell and it ALL tastes the same. Also, there is always a person with a gas powered leaf blower in the front of the bakery. The store is outdated but I can deal with that. I would rather drive to Safeway where at least the bakery people smile and are helpful.

Our daughter takes private golf sessions at DarkHorse Golf Club in Auburn, CA. While she was taking one of her lessons, I decided to drive to a nearby bakery her instructor recommended. There isn’t a large storefront sign that reads Gristmill. The signage above the store read ‘Bakery and Deli’ and it stands next door to a small grocery chain called Holiday Quality Foods. The workers there aren’t exactly warm and fuzzy. They are kind of rough around the edges, but I kind of like that about the place! You can expect to find some GREAT baked goods and deli items though. On my first visit, I decided to have a strawberry cream cheese croissant. I figured I’d be able to tell if there are other baked goods are delicious based on how well they make their crossants. Oh my… I am SO going back to Gristmill. Their croissant was perfect with my hazelnut vanilla coffee! The décor inside isn’t fancy. It’s a pretty old place with a bunch of small tables and plastic patio chairs. Again, totally okay because it has that authentic bakery feel! Aside from deli and baked items, they also have a cold case for other desserts like tiramisu. I cannot wait to give other items a try!
