I want to fill a bathtub with the African peanut soup. I want to bath in it. I want to absorb it. I want to become it. The other food is whatever. This place has an awesome room in back where they do comedy shows and stuff. It’s a nice space and the shows are free and pretty high quality.

They weren’t horrible, but it wasn’t all that great either. First, I put my order in online. There was a problem with their phone so they didn’t get my order until the delivery guy was there so he has to put it in. The breakfast tacos you have to put together yourself, I asked for veggie chorizo, with egg and cheese. I just got two tortillas and a size of chorizo. They forgot my drink, not that big of a deal, but still. The rest of my order was right, but I could think of a handful of other places that have better food than here. I probably won’t be ordering from here again nor will I suggest it when deciding on where to go for food.

Meh, is my response to personal experience for this location. After each terrible experience I’ve said to myself the next one will be better I promise. Seriously who am I kidding when, I hear myself say that. My buddy loves this place, so I suck it up and just go along solely for pure convenience. Of course we go for lunch and the young lady at the counter literally fails to place my order in, so my ticket is never made. I kid you not, 4 plates order after me come out before my sandwich. I mean can’t really take 20 minutes to make a turkey sandwich(really?). Turns out the girl didn’t place my ticket in, and well it’s my lunch hour and now I am going to be late. So I have to request my meal to-go. Which isn’t a problem. Just perturbed, that I didn’t get to eat my meal and obviously have ruined lunch plans. By the way this is still not the end of poor experiences. Swing by for the breakfast, seriously its 5 minutes till 8am. The door is WIDE open no joke, appears to be open. Obviously I assume they’re open for business, it’s only 5 measly minutes. Guess what they’re sticklers for those 5 minutes and was turned away. I genuinely said thank you and said I would be going else where. Which indeed I did, to be honest. I’ve tried the breakfast here, from tacos to eggs benedict. None of the plates are anything to write home about. I can make a better hollandaise sauce at home compared to them. Perhaps I should just stick to cooking, because the convenience is not worth the grief.

First time at Austin Java. The cinnamon roll and croissant were dry and forgetful. The croissant was more like a crescent roll. Service seemed confused, but maybe they had a case of the Mondays. We ordered a medium mocha and a small, soy vanilla latte. They both came in the same size cup, but we got charged for one medium and one small, so maybe they were out of small cups. But when the cashier asked the barista what one of the drinks he made was, he had to ask us to repeat our order, even though he’s just made the drinks. Coffee themselves were ok.

Let’s preface with, I went here for coffee only. So I can’t speak to the food. However, the double dirty hippie(chai latte with two shots of espresso) that I ordered was delicious, so I can only assume the rest of the fare matches that same level of quality. Looking forward to coming back during my next visit to Austin.

Not impressed. The food was meh, the counter service people were not helpful and frankly, the place wasn’t even very clean.

Fun downhill bicycle ride from West Campus to get here. Love the ambiance of the earth-toned interior. Great coffee and breakfast menu. Cool employees. All in all, a fun place for an early outing. Right next to Pease Park, so great for when you’ve been playing in the park, and get hungry.

Enjoy holding lunch meetings at this coffee shop. It’s right next to my gym and the food is delicious. I would also like to feature a few aerial photos for sale on the wall!

I stopped in this place for a short break, on a return road trip to Omaha from San Antonio. Ordered an egg white Hippy Hollow Omelette and an iced chai… while both were okay, I was surprised at how incredibly greasy the omelette was(yay for negating the benefit of ordering it with egg whites). After finishing my meal I decided to check out the wall offerings of coffee packs, pictures and mugs. Grabbing two mugs(touristy style gifts for friends, ftw), I went up to the counter to pay… and was dismissively greeted by a different young woman than the(much friendlier) one who’d originally taken my food order. She rang me out for the two mugs, gave me a receipt to sign and(saying almost nothing other than the price I’d owed) promptly walked away from the counter. I stood in place and waited, for a full 5 minutes of quiet… then she walked over to the second register, looked over and said nothing. Another minute passed before she said«what do you want?» When I asked for a copy of my receipt she said, «oh, I didn’t think you wanted one»…mind you, I was never asked. She approached the rest of the interaction(simply printing the receipt and handing it to me) as if I was a giant interruption in her day. While I have a fairly high tolerance for things, bad customer service just gets my goat. And, frankly, one shouldn’t leave your establishment wishing they’d gone to the Starbucks down the street simply because they encounter a rude staff member. I’m not sure of when the next time I’ll be in Austin will be, but I can’t say I’d go back if I had the option… not a completely terrible place, but it definitely doesn’t stand out as a «must stop here» location.

I’ve been coming to Austin Java since I was in college 7 or 8 years ago. I usually like to get the Asian chicken sandwich. The sauce is so tangy and mixed with peanuts, it pairs perfectly with the crunchy sprouts. I also enjoy a cup of their chicken soup. I just noticed upon our last visit that is «award wining» now. I would definitely give it an award! It is served with a small chunk of focaccia bread. The interior of the restaurant is a little cramped for sure, but the food is always fresh and tasty. You can also set outdoors and dogs are welcomed on the patio.

Austin Java used to be so incredible, I remember coming in and having a great experience every time, so there’s one star. This morning I came in, feeling nostalgic and happy to be there. We started off with two coffees, the guy at the counter was so rude. It was frustrating because the way he was talking to us, was in a manner that we were such an inconvenience(which I over heard him laughing it off to his co-worker that he forgot about, so it’s already been about a fifteen minute wait and they weren’t busy) He finally hands me our coffees, I ask him which is which with the snarkiest attitude I’ve heard in a while. I wasn’t being rude, I was not for a second anything but polite and just trying to get two coffees. Austin Java used to be one of my favorite places in Austin, but unfortunately due to the mediocre customer service I just experienced– I’ll never come back.

I know this is Austin and everyone loves Austin Java, but as far as I’m concerned their food and their coffee is mediocre at best. Please, if you have non-Texan visitors in town visiting, don’t let their first breakfast tacos be from Austin Java.

Edit: 5 stars, go see the comedy show on saturdays. Avoid the food. — — – Ordered 2 espressos, got charged for one, waited 15 minutes for them to correct their mistake and charge me for my second. The espressos were burnt and disgusting Food was okay, I could taste the earthy flavor of mold in the vegetables in my eggs. The toilets are absolutely disgusting. There was spit on the floor, toilet seat and toilet were heavily stained with years of abuse, and the air was heavy with… God knows what. I wanted to like this place. What started as 5 stars for uniqueness and adorable baristas turned into 1. Not coming back for all the tea in china… Which they would probably burn too.

This rating is for Sure Thing Comedy only(a comedy show hosted at Austin Java in the back stage every Saturday night). I was looking around for things to do in Austin on a Saturday night other then drinking and I found out about Sure Thing. It starts at 8pm and was told to arrive a bit early to get a good seat and parking. We arrived about 20 mins early and had the option of every seat in the house. The show consisted of three performers plus the two hosts. Over all, for a free show, I couldn’t ask for anything more. Two of the comedians were hilarious while the third was okay. Its also a major bonus that you can order food and drinks from Austin Java throughout the show. P. S. Stay away from the front row unless you want to get called out in the show

Not bad coffee not great coffee. I come here to grab a coffee when I fly out in the mornings. They are fast and pretty friendly but it’s over priced and not that terrific but one of the better ones in the airport

I normally love this place, but I’m disappointed in what just happened. I ordered a salad to go, and got all the way home before I realized it was the wrong salad. Not sure there’s anything more frustrating than looking forward to one thing, only to be given a sub-par version of it. I called to tell them what happened and they said they could remake it or refund my money. Since it’s currently rush hour and I live 30 minutes away, I opted for the refund. When they asked what the name was on the order, I gave them my name and tried to explain that I had ordered at the counter, not over the phone. She was snippy and said«all I need is your name». She waited a minute, said it had been refunded and then hung up on me. All I wanted was an apology. I would normally give this place 5 stars for the food, but poor customer service makes me not want to return… sad day.

Came here for Free Comedy Night(Saturdays). I really like the concept and I thoroughly enjoyed myself watching the various comics. My review is more geared towards the service/food. I ordered the red sangria and they gave it to me in a small champagne glass. My friend ordered the white sangria and they gave it to her in a HUGE glass. I wish it had been advertised differently or there was more consistency. My small glass was also half juice while her huge glass was mostly wine. Needless to say I was a little disappointed. There is service to get food during the comedy show although our server only checked on us once(which I get because it’s hard to serve while not obstructing people’s views for the show). We were seated at a table which would have made it easy to eat a meal, although everyone else in just chairs looked kind of difficult to eat without a table. Overall, the free comedy show is awesome, just wish there was more consistency in the drinks. When I have come here for breakfast before(well the Barton Springs location), they have bomb breakfast tacos so check those out.

Still love this place after eating here for the last 8 years. African Peanut Soup and a honeynut latte is my go to meal. Sounds like a gross combo? Wrong! So, so tasty. Great specials during the week, especially on Wednesdays! Local artists are showcased throughout the café. If you haven’t been yet, do it!

About as close to 5 stars as you can get. A super friendly environment, great food at great prices, and enough locations around the city to satisfy your cravings no matter where you are. The coffee here is top notch and the breakfast tacos are right on par with any I have had in the city. You really can’t go wrong with a trip to Austin Java and it tends to be the place we bring visitors to the city because we know the quality will be there and we know the service will showcase the Austin hospitality.

I’ve been coming to Austin Java for years. Great place for coffee, hibiscus mint iced tea(yum!), breakfast, or lunch. It’s a great spot for conversing, studying, working, or just hanging out. The patio is dog friendly, but watch out for flies while you’re eating(I had to shoo them away from my food about every 10 seconds this past weekend when I was there). My favorite item on their menu is the Thai peanut chicken sandwich with a side Caesar salad. I like the multiple side dish options(chips and salsa, soup, salad). Nice variety and options on the menu, too. Parking can be a challenge, but I can usually find a spot on the street within minutes.
