Bummer to write this but my recent visit was very disappointing. I live nearby and we really lack food options. i went with my daughter and we ordered pasta, hummus, and chips/queso. Pasta order was wrong, the hummus order was wrong, and the queso was inedible, not melted. You could literally turn it upside down and it wouldn’t come out. So, three for three were bad or screwed up, not their finest hour. We’re rooting for y’all. Tighten it up and get us coming in as repeat customers, we need you!

There are so few places to go in the Exposition/Lake Austin corridor, I really wish I could give this Austin Java a good review. The staff are not very friendly, the menu is limited because the landlord does not allow any tenants that use meat products, and the food just seems to be prepared poorly here. I also got a cookie from the pastry case and after noticing it was hard and stale I saw a date sticker on the back labeled 12 days previous. What kind of coffee shop sells 2 week old baked goods? Pluses: Nice space, tables are not crowded, there’s a covered patio, art on the walls, wifi seems good. Stick to drinks and wifi here.

Vegetarian menu, all the same prices and no meat. Portions seem to be smaller also. My salad with my soup and salad was nothing. I’ve been back for multiple coffees. Service is unfriendly and rude. I frequent the 15th& Lamar location often, it is a different experience

I am so disgusted. Look, I’m normally a decent fan of Austin Java. I go to the one on BS quite a bit and its always legit. This location leaves much to be desired. Today I walked in to grab a quick snack before my tutoring client. For $ 8.95 I grabbed a medium coffee to go, a water bottle, and a veggie and dip platter to go. As i was eating my veggie and dip, trying, ya know, to be healthy, I noticed my baby carrots were a bit withered. No big deal, I thought, since baby carrots can get like that in the fridge after about a day. Except as I was reaching for a tomato, I noticed fur. On three tomatoes. Carefully hidden from view. I did not pay 3.99 to have moldy, old veggies. I’m disgusted this was a) sold to me and b) considered acceptable to be kept out in the fridge. How frigging old was this platter? I’m nauseated. I will NOT be back.

I have to give this Austin Java a low rating to influence anyone deciding to go to this location. This particular Austin Java is vegan/vegetarian only and doesn’t have the full menu. They weren’t able to make the normal pancakes available at other locations, and in spite of *specializing* in vegetarian dishes, had less vegetable options than the others. Also just a completely different feel. Take the time to visit one of the other ones. That being said, friendly staff, fast service, clean and quiet. Not a bad place, just a bad Austin Java.

Sorry this is so long! I guess it’s about time I update my review. I was a little overzealous the night I went. For a couple of months after, it seemed as though they were still working out the kinks. It’s definitely improved and still gets 5 stars from me. Anyway, I work nearby so I stop by a lot for coffee or for lunch. The portions are HUGE. It sounds weird, but sometimes I’ll just get black beans and salad, or soup and mashed potatoes… or black beans and fruit. It’s all really filling and is usually $ 5 or $ 6, which is significantly less than what you would be paying for a veggie burger(those are delicious too though). I also get scrambled eggs for breakfast sometimes, and again, it’s usually more than enough and way less than a typical plate. The breakfast tacos are delicious, too. I like that they have different specials everyday. Yesterday, I stopped by after work to get a drink. Happy Hour is Monday-Friday, from 4 – 7, so I got a dollar off my whiskey sour(draft beers are also $ 1 off). Appetizers are half price on Tuesdays, so I got a spinach goat cheese quesadilla with salsa. I normally wouldn’t drop 9 bones on an appetizer, but for half off, of course I was going to try it. It was HEAVEN. Even the salsa was good and I didn’t expect that from here. Back to drinking, the whiskey sour was sooo good. Although the drink was really strong itself, it was paired with a nice blend of sweet and sour. sometimes you get too much of one or the other. I also had some kind of alcoholic coffee here when I was hungover one time(on a weekend! I promise I didn’t get drunk the night before I had to go to work!). Someone accidentally made two extra tacos so me and my friend got free brunch, too! The service is really friendly. I do have a close friend that works here, but I’m not just talking about him. Every person I’ve interacted with has been especially pleasant, including the guy I’m assuming is the manager. He seems pretty laid back, but you can tell he also genuinely cares what’s going on around here. The atmosphere is really laid back and welcoming. I don’t have kids, but kids eat free Mondays-Wednesdays. I like a place that’s open to creatures of all ages. So anyway, there was a mix of me reading a book while boozing, three guys hanging out, a mom with her two kids, and a few high schoolers studying here, and everyone was able to get something that worked for them. I can’t speak of too many dinner experiences here, because I’ve only had dinner here once. However, it’s my favorite place to treat myself to during lunch, or go to if I forgot breakfast. It really is the most important meal of the day!

I really like this place. I’ve been to other Austin Java locations before and they are OK but the people and atmosphere at the Tarrytown location are what does it for me. I go for coffee and baked goods in the morning while my daughter takes a class nearby. I bring my toddler with me and my sister brings her baby. I really appreciate how kid friendly the place is. Both staff and patrons actually seem happy to see our kids. My husband and I have brought both kids for dinner and the family pasta meals and kid movies make eating out enjoyable, not just bearable, it’s fun! I’ve had a server fancy up my muffin just for fun and I think it was the manager who gave me a free coffee just because he thought it might bring joy to my day, which it did. I’m not a vegetarian but I don’t have to eat meat every night so I’m no expert but I like the food. I love that there is breakfast all day. The taste, freshness and style remind me of home cooking by someone who knows how to cook.

After a couple of visits, I feel like I can make a proper review. I always love finding out about a new all vegetarian place. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always mean it is good. The food at this particular location seems to fall flat in flavor. The good: Baked goods, although I do not believe they are made in-house. Coffee is hot and delicious. They always have great deals at night. The bad: I don’t know that staff is properly trained on what vegan is. I ordered a vegan benedict and got an egg with vegan hollandaise. Although I really appreciate restaurants having vegan & vegetarian items, I don’t know that Austin Java has someone that really cares about having tasty veg items on staff. There is a serious lack of flavor here, and I’m not sure why. It shouldn’t be enough just to have a vegan/vegetarian establishment, you should also care about serving delicious food, too! The confusing: is there table service here or not? Sometimes there is, sometimes there isn’t. I think they need to pick one or the other and stick to it. Counter staff should also be attentive and let customers know if they need to order at the counter instead of just letting them figure it out for themselves. I really hope that they get their s&!t together because I would love to frequent this location. It’s usually a more pleasant experience to be confident in ordering anything off the menu.

As much as Austin folks fit into the stereotype of vegan-loving, bicycling-riding, glasses-wearing hipsters, they sure do love their animal-based meals. Think about it: this lovely city boasts a nationally famous deli named after swine(Noble Pig), and residents of all shapes and sizes set aside a half day(likely skipping work) to partake in the smoked meat of an eastside turquoise brick and mortar. But, the vegetarian joints still hold their own, true to the stereotype-based-on-truth food eaters of this active town. Specifically, Austin Java has launched this vegetarian-only eatery in the unpredictable district of Tarrytown – do these old-money yuppies really want vegetarian grub? Well, when I say vegetarian-only, I don’t mean that this joint only welcomes such diners. In actuality, meat eaters alike still love Austin Java; see«migas» and any combination of breakfast grub. For lunch offerings, I would definitely give the soups and veggie burgers a spin. I actually found AJ’s vegetarian chili to most closely resemble meat chili, as compared to other preparations of non-animal-based Texas Red in Austin. Unfortunately, a tweaking could benefit the salads, as I found many wilted and old leaves in my mixed green salad. Additionally, bread was nowhere to be found in my soup and salad combo. The people make this joint, as the laidback atmosphere gives way to a great lunch, breakfast, or dinner. Heck, they offer 50% off entrees after 5PM. How could you NOT eat dinner for half price and drink on the cheap? I mean, you are in Tarrytown after all. All you do is drink and eat, right?

My co-workers and I love the fact that Austin Java opened up less than a mile and a half from our work. And even when I’m not at work I still want to come here. This Austin Java is the only one of its kind and I totally dig it. I always get the iced cinnamon dolce latte and its delicious. The food is good, the options are endless and there is always some kind of ½ off thing going on. My favorite is the migas and I like the queso as well. I’ve had the breakfast tacos and they are good, my only complaint is they need some better tortillas. But, they probably don’t know where to get good ones since this location is in the middle of an area known for money and not a lot of «culture.» I was strangely impressed with the pancake for some reason and their ceasar salad is awesome. An added bonus is the vegan cupcakes and the all the random desserts they carry on a daily basis. They even have a full bar. WHAT?! I haven’t been to any of the other Austin Java’s before, but it is safe to say this one’s my favorite, for biased reasons of course.

We were really looking forward to a decent neighborhood restaurant, but I couldn’t be more disappointed with this one. The service is horrible and the quality of the food is not much better. I have tried it 3 times and each time part of our order took about 20 minutes longer than the rest of the order, so half of us were done with our meal before others had even received theirs. Each time there have been items that were either undercooked, overcooked or simply different from the description of the menu. Blech, I won’t be going back!

Three things too cool for school: 1. Winning the Lotto. 2. Living la Vida Loca. 3. Having lunch with the delightful Ashley S. at a new vegetarian restaurant that’s down the street from where we work, which also serves breakfast all day. Yes, please. If you’re familiar with the Austin Java’s around town, this is their newest one at Windsor and Exposition. If you’re familiar with the Austin Java menu, this one is all vegetarian, and most items can be tweaked for vegans. If you’re a card-carrying die-hard Veghead, you’re going to think this is Heaven, or at least some cool place in Iowa. It’s hard to go wrong with breakfast fare, and it’s harder to go wrong with the veggie breakfast fare here. I thought the«Tree-Hugger» Benedict over a surprisingly spicy chorizo was some pretty amazing stuff, and savoring this dish along with a large buttermilk pancake and their own cinnamon bun made me want to try the biscuits & gravy and scrambled tofu plates. But maybe not all at once. Incidentally, the«skillet potatoes» here are pretty darn perfect. I haven’t even considered what the burgers and wraps and soups and pasta specialties must be like. I will mention that coffee in those self-service thermal things is never quite hot enough for me, and I’m just not enamored of «order-at-the-counter» restaurants with extensive menus, because it seems I’m always behind people who take forever to read or can’t make a decision. But those are just my own personal small potatoes — make sure you try their potatoes with whatever you order, and get ready for an abrupt about-face. We’ll both leave here having a great day.

I was so excited Austin Java was coming to the area and really disappointed to find out it was«a no-meat facility». Really? Good for a coffee or light snack though. The staff seemed a little short tempered on having to explain its all vegetarian.

I’ve only been in for Happy Hour and the three appetizers I’ve tried have been solid: Nachos, Hummus and Goat Cheese and Spinach quesadillas have really hit the spot alongside a couple 512 IPAs. There are four taps and the last time I was in they had the 512IPA and a delicious Rahr Winter Warmer alongside the ubiquitous Shiner and Dos Equis. They also have a full bar. It’s great that there’s a place to eat and drink in this neighborhood shopping center again.

Typically I avoid places that won’t serve meat. Usually the«substitutes» suck and the staff is just goofy. Anyway, I decided to drop in for lunch JFTFOI. For whatever reason Eggs are«ok» so I got the Hippy Hollow omelette with a side of fruit. I polished it off with two Shiner Bock. It was good considering there was no meat. Not quite enough so I also bought a croissant. Next time I’ll get the potatoes too. Since they have a full bar and I live down the street it might be a good place for drinks with the neighbors. We shall see…

2.5 years ago we moved to a tiny little cottage in Tarrytown right off of Exposition Boulevard. We didn’t have any options for food/drink within walking distance except for the now closed Texenza Coffee, which by all standards didn’t really offer food of acceptable quality anyways. Early in June, we found out that Austin Java was opening. And it was opening soon! Around rolls November and Austin Java was still not opened. Then we bought a new house in East Austin the day before Austin Java opened up. The good news is that we probably would not have been able to afford to buy a new house with Austin Java around the corner. Living across the street from a restaurant would not have been easy on the ol’ wallet. We were one of the first to check out the new Austin Java and I was not hugely impressed by the service, but it was brand new so I’m sure they were still trying to iron out some kinks/train new staff, etc. Food is good at Austin Java, but not fantastic. They have a moderate selection of beer and wine as well. I would recommend Austin Java for breakfast, but not for brunch. It’s also a good quick lunch stop, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say a great dinner location. Ambiance of the restaurant is unoffensive, but not particularly interesting either. Usually some local art that can be bought.

Really very tasty coffee and staff & service was especially wonderful. I went with my pal to study and forgot to specify«for here». Staff was very nice about switching the paper cup to a mug for us! Very friendly in accommodating a sort of weird request. Also, the manager made it his personal endeavor to fix the internet when at first I wasn’t able to connect – so great! And the connection is super fast. He told me of his strong opinion that internet should work instantly without fuss. This is a really wonderful place to study as there’s lots of space. SOGLAD that Terrytown finally has a place that feels like Austin within walking distance!!! Will be back. And hopefully the landlord of this center will support the endeavors of this business and bring some more community back into the neighborhood…

Went there for lunch today and was happy with pretty much everything. Great selection of vegetarian items and many are, or can be, made vegan, or Gluten free. I got the portabello sandwich, which was pretty good, and my lunch partner got the Texas pesto, which was VERY good. They are famous for their African spicy peanut soup which I have had in the past and it is VERY good, but I do wish they had a vegan version of it. I can’t wait to return and try some more of their menu items and specials. All staff, servers, were very pleasant but I personally thought they should spiff up their attire a bit more, look more professional. I know, It’s an Austin thing :-) The only draw back was that it’s a bit noisy. Maybe as the place becomes more popular they can install some sound absorbing artwork, or sculpture. But when it’s crowded, as it is during lunch hour, it can be a bit hard to hear those at your own table. Still, it wasn’t a deal breaker and overall the atmosphere and décor are quite nice. Best thing was that it’s conscious eating. It’s animal and environmentally friendly, sustainable, healthy, and best of all, delicious.
