Komana I Wana Hawaiian Shave Ice

My boyfriend and I came on a warm Saturday night in August for a sno cone fix, and we weren’t disappointed. Granted, it did feel like the process was a little long for a couple of medium sno cones, but diving into that delicious frozen wonderland made it all worth it. The shaved ice was just perfectly soft and compacted, the syrup to ice ratio was just right, and my Red Raspberry flavoring really made me a happy camper.
As you can probably tell, I take my shaved ice and sno cones very seriously, and this place’s frozen treat got a high grade from me. We were very happy customers.
But the bees! The bees! Be careful with those bees!!!
The fella and I opted to order from the walk-​up window, and I don’t quite know why. Most of the time spent waiting was a blur because we spent the time fighting off bees. Hmm… maybe that’s why the sno cone-​making process felt a little slow. Time stands still when you’re dodging bees, haha!
As we were leaving, one of the poor girls working the stand was sent outside to tackle the bee situation. As I was joking with the obviously bee-​scared girl about avoiding the trash can area, one of the little bastards got a little too close for comfort, and I threw my sno cone in panic. I think the whole world collectively cried at that moment when I let go of that amazing shaved ice heaven. I felt bad about it too. I mentioned aloud that I needed another sno cone fix to make up for sharing my sno cone with the ground. The bee-​scared clerk heard, and she said I was taken care of. Very, very solid customer service, indeed.
So, for Sno Cone 2.0, we opted for the drive-​thru window. No bee issues there. My guy even took a visit to the bathroom outhouse at the rear of the business. No bees there either.
Long story short: try this place. You won’t regret it. Just be smart (or bee smart??) and drive in!

As far as shaved ices go, Komana is bomb diggity! Perfectly textured ice! Extra fine and actually creamy (even the selections without actual cream in them) if that’s possible. TONS of flavor choices, fast and friendly service (both walk-​up and drive-​thru) — the best sweet treat while trying to beat the heat!
You can choose from the many pre-​made creative selections (e.g., Silver Fox, Rock ‘n Roll, The Hulk…) or go crazy and concoct your own flavor combo — can choose up to 3 different flavors in one cup (small, medium, or large)! Watermelon, grape, and raspberry anyone? Trust me… it’s actually pretty good. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the Root Beer Float… off the charts!

TIPS:
*During the spring/​summer season they are open daily from noon to dusk; closed on Monday. As of August 25^th, 2014 Komona will only be open on weekends until date TBD (depends open weather, customer traffic, etc.). Get it while you can! There are still plenty of sunny days ahead!
*I drove past once and thought they were closed on a Tuesday because their open sign was not on. If you’re unsure, pull in and double check. The fact that the lot is filled with cars for sale can kind of hide the front of the building.
*If you want to take your ice to go, ask for a «flat top» to avoid a huge mess (they do not have lids).

This is seriously the BEST shave ice in town! Best syrup, best ice and best owners/​servers in town! I am very selective with my shave ice. I want my ice soft, with just the right amount of syrup and great flavor! (some syrups taste watered down… at other places)
Mary and Gary couldn’t be nicer or more meticulous about their business!
You will be glad you went! Even, if you have to wait in line! :)
Also, the bird haven is fun to see. We have seen the most beautiful bird, a painted bunting, a few times. Mary makes my daughter a grape, pineapple and black cherry shave ice… which is called the painted bunting!!!

No place better! The flavors and quality cannot be beat. We’ve tried other places and they do not begin to compare. There is this location and then all the others.
Add Mary and Gary, the owners, who make each visit a special treat. The greeting, friendly, personalized service combines a five star restaurant with a visit to Grandma’s house. Perfection and love in every serving.

In the midst of a record drought and heat wave, thank goodness for Komana I Wana Hawaiian Shaved Ice! The line is usually a little long, but it’s because the owners are so friendly and greet each customer with such enthusiasm. You actually don’t mind the wait, especially when the bird feeders are full, and the ringing of a bell marks each order completed. These are great people who will take you back to a simpler time in America: when the customer was always right, service was part of the price, and a big heaping pile of shaved ice could make you forget about the baking heat for a few minutes. We are regulars and will continue to be… until Garey and Mary leave to visit relatives in California again, or the temperatures dip below 90! Thanks!!!

I went back today. Yes, that makes two days in a row. Come on, give me a break… I have a 10-​year-​old in tow! It was for her, of course. I just happened to have a stapled printout of the listing and review that I wrote to share with the owners who did not know about Unilocal.
So, we get to the front of the line and we are ready with our selections that we spent all night dreaming up. Little one wants pink grapefruit and root beer (yikes). Girlfriend wants guava and tangerine. I wanted black cherry and strawberry margarita. If you think my choice is strange, you should see what I used to get at Cold Stone Creamery.
Anyway, we were greeted by the same couple who remembered us from the day before. They got a laugh out of our choices and started crafting our ice. While we waited, we noticed that they offer cream toppings. When the window opened, we inquired and they gave us a sample. Get the cream topping for a quarter!
Before leaving, I handed them a copy of my review printed out. I explained that it is just something I do for fun. I think they thought I was trying to sell something. It was like Unilocal meets Amway… Unilocalway? Anyway, they smiled and waved as we left. We told them we would be back soon. Just like yesterday, we sat and ate our ice in the parking lot, tasting each others flavors and laughing about our ice addiction.
In my first review, I forgot to mention that they have a walk-​up window in addition to the drive-​thru. So, I am telling you now. They have a walk-​up window. Stop reading and go!
