This is our favorite restaurant in Austin. I have no idea whether it’s authentic Japanese cuisine and I could not care less. I crave their fried rice and ginger sauce weekly. We live north of downtown and will drive, in traffic, to get here for dinner. I recently tried the grilled romaine and could not stop raving about how delicious it was. The service is always great — we really love this place.

We enjoyed Lavaca Teppan. Note that the teppan is made in the kitchen, not table side. All the food was super fresh from the miso soup and edamame to the shrimp udon. Definitely get the mochi for dessert. So delicious! Green tea was my favorite and my kids loved the mango.

Overpriced, with terrible service. Food was mediocre at best. We ordered the«featured» soup which was Udon Curry Soup with Pork Belly. Although the red curry flavor was good a better description of the dish would be «bowl of curry-flavored gravy with lots of udon and shadow of pork(not pork belly). Our service was very, very slow, but we did receive the correct orders(unlike the table next). Austin has so many wonderful restaurants, but in my experience, this is not one of them.

Not bad. But not really good either. Stopped in here on a recent visit to Austin. Ordered a few appetizer plates, including the fried chicken, the tempura plate and the tuna. All were… fine. The tempura plate was the most successful, as the breading was light and fluffy and tender, but the fried chicken and the tuna lacked any depth of flavor. Even dunking everything in sauce didn’t help. Not much improvement from my udon noodle soup with shrimp. Everything was just bland. I understand udon soup should have a clear-ish broth, but you can pack a lot of flavor in a clear broth. This had very little. I had to totally douse it in the togarashi that came with it to keep me going. Service was slow and not particularly friendly or good. Wine list was filled with grocery store standards. Overall, not sure I’d return for lunch. Definitely will pass on dinner.

I’m updating my review just to day that I moved away from Austin and this is the place I miss the most. There’s nothing like a hot mabo don on a cold day and I can’t find anywhere in my new city that makes that dish.

I enjoyed the chicken teriyaki for dinner and had some soothing hot green tea! It was outstanding and relatively inexpensive for a dinner, Japanese dinner at that! It did take about 25⁄30 minutes for the food to arrive, but still deserving of 5 stars as the freshness and quality of dish was outstanding! Highly recommend!

Well isn’t this the little un-sung hero of yummy and casual Japanese dishes in a great location? Wanna skip the long lines and big tabs while still enjoying a meal downtown? This is might be your new spot! The rolls are pretty good, but the dishes are the stars of the show here at Teppan. The happy hour will blow your mind! They don’t have hard liquor, but they make awesome wine and sake cocktails. I haven’t tried the sake colada, but that sounds really good, right??? The service is super friendly too. Yay, Teppan! Eat here. Watch a show at Scottish Rite. Have a night cap at Dive Bar. Does that not sound like the recipe for a great night out?

Me and my sister had a scrumptious lunch here, way better sushi than my regular place. We had the beef teriyaki as an entrée and the meat was reminiscent of my husband’s broiled ribeye we get from Johnson’s Market. The freshest, best food, expertly cooked

I like the fried rice here. My friends and I usually get the grilled chicken with fried rice. It comes with their ginger based sauce, which is really good. Did not like the veggies that comes with the chicken. You can get it without the veggies and get extra fried rice instead! Frankly, I haven’t tasted other items on their menu yet. Will definitely come back(‘cos this is the closest Japanese lunch place to my department at UT: P)

Good food, never too busy, regardless of what time I go in(usually dinner or late). Service is a little slow, however it feels like a family owned business and while it may not be speedy, the service is always friendly. This last time I was there I had the deep friend chicken app(NOT Kara Age, but rather in a sweet potato flour of some kind). It was a big portion, delicious and the dipping sauce was flavorful without being overpowering. I also had the Ton Katsu. Big cutlet, crispy on the outside, juicy and flavorful on the inside, nice big portion of katsu sauce(my favorite sauce on the planet!). The shredded cabbage and carrot(a kind of dry slaw) was fresh and crunchy, which I like. Food — 4.5 stars for quality and consistency Service — 3.5 stars for friendly and slow, even when they aren’t busy

I have only recently discovered this place and I am in love! So far everything that I’ve tried here is delicious and the interior and exterior of the restaurant looks fabulous. I would definitely recommend this place if you’re looking for some casual Japanese food on both a night-in or night-out! My favorite here so far is the Mabo Tofu!

I ordered Torikara Don and it tastes great. The egg is well cooked and the sauce with rice is perfect. love it!

This place has the best prices, flavor, and décor in town, and yet it always seems to be empty. This is merely a sad effect of location, because this resturant is fantastic! On Valentine’s day, they offered a 7 course meal for 2 for only $ 40, and it was the best cuisine experience I have had. The food was perfectly prepared, we sampled some amazing dishes, and it was all served extremely elegantly. The service was phenomenal, with the waiter addressing all of our needs and questions instantly. I don’t see how this place hasn’t gotten on the map of great food in Austin. On a normal day, I usually stop in for some teppan, and it is reasonably priced, delicious, and quite filling. I hope that this review can foster some support for the resturant, because this is one of the few restaurants that deserves a 5 star review.

I’m not a religious man… but I’m fairly certain I’ve found heaven — it’s been at lavaca tepan this whole time, guys. I had the California roll and the teriyaki beef tepan yaki and I’ve never come that close to climaxing while eating a meal. Try this place, you won’t regret it.

The chips are fresh and warm. So delicious. The hot sauce is fairly hot so if you don’t like hot, don’t try it. The food was ok, not great. The best thing was it is close to the museums and the staff is all nice.

It’s a Japanese restaurant based on more of the cooked foods. It’s delicious. I recommend the mapo tofu and house soup. It’s pretty friendly for lunch or dinner.

We came here as a small group on a Saturday night! The restaurant was pretty empty AKA we were seated right away. The waiter was extremely attentive and got us menus, drinks, menus right away. The portions are huge. The food was eh… it wasn’t terrible but I wasn’t licking my plate at the end of the meal. I wouldn’t mind eating there again but I’m not sure I would seek it out.

Today I went with a party of 6 for lunch, and the service was better and they even printed us separate checks. So I am bumping them a star. In good weather, try to sit on their small front patio. I still wish the portions were a little larger because now I’m hungry and it’s only 2:38pm. But it’s one of the most civilized and healthy lunch options in the area, and for that I am grateful.

I’d been wanting to try this out for a while, looking for a good Japanese place near UT campus. I was a little disappointed they didn’t have any sushi but used Unilocal to help make sure I ordered the best dishes. Came on a Monday night and it was fairly empty — only us and another table. Ordered: House Soup: what looked like such a simple soup packed a lot of flavor Tori Kara Don: really liked the dish but wish the chicken was a little crispier; the egg was unexpectedly sweet but went well with the rest of the dish; and don’t forget to dip the chicken in the sauce that comes on the side!(remembered I had it half way through) Server was nice and prices very reasonable.
