Our family calls this Luby’s «Luby-topia» because it is the absolute best, most fantastic, beautiful, wonderful Lubys in the world. The food is fresh and delicious. I wish it was still retro, with ladies pushing around water and ice tea carts, and the traditional cafeteria check out system. We are very happy to have this alternative since the Luby’s near our home is now closed(suddenly, without warning, btw). If you want the best Luby’s in the Austin area, this is the Luby’s for you. When you drive up, you see the beautiful Luby’s on top of a hill. In the driveway, you can easily drop off senior citizen family members so they can go inside while you park the car. Once inside, everything is beautifully remodeled, the food is perfectly prepared, the salads are fresh, the rolls are perfect. Look no further, THIS is your new Lubys.

We eat at Luby’s 3 or 4 times a week between 3 and 5 pm. This is time when you can get a $ 2 senior discount on a Luann plate. We usually split a Luann plate because there is enough food for two if you get liver or chicken. The chicken and turkey roast comes with an extra side of dressing and gravy. The fish serving on the Luann plate is very small. When I get the roast beef, I usually ask for a sample because sometimes it can be a little tough. Luby’s advertises a heart healthy menu but most items are too salty. I am not sure why this can’t be corrected. Once a week the menu includes a great baked potato(with sour cream cheese and chives) and fresh green beans. These are my favorite sides. With the senior discount, you can get a choice of meats plus two sides and a roll(with real butter plus a dish of cranberries and fresh lemons for your water) for less than $ 8 including the tip. Sometimes the waitress will offer you a complementary coffee in a china cup or a large tea to go. I haven’t found a better value in Austin. I like the hilltop location at Steck & Mopac. It has a great view. The updated interior, cleanliness, cloth napkins, and friendly staff contribute to a pleasant dining experience.

Very convenient«locals» location for this chain that I’ve frequented for lunch over the years. I’ve seldom been disappointed with the selection of items available or the staff service at this particular link in the chain. While I try to stick to the healthier items and stay away from the tempting desserts and the heavier selections at lunch time, sometimes the pecan pie or a particular cake will call to me and bust those good intentions. Many tasty and well-prepared dishes, especially for a cafeteria setting, and certainly worth the price if you take advantage of their Manager’s specials and their Luann plates. Thanks for the veggie plate today, I’ll be back.

I have been going to Lubys restaurants since I was a kid. Same set up through out the years. Always hot and fresh foods, no complaints on that at all. The chicken fried steak, fish filets, and cheese covered steaks are my favorites. Staff is prompt and friendly. Cafeteria style set up so you can choose what you want and how you want it. Soups are always hot and good, green hatch chili chicken soup is to die for!

Found a bead of jewelry in food Not even a real pearl! I guess that was the prize for eating here! Food was good and service was better than most

This location is clean enough and well kept. The food is good but not shocking(I mean, it’s Luby’s for goodness sake!). The food is overpriced, imo, but not so outrageous that I don’t want to pay for it($ 11 for a small piece of blackened tilapia and two small sides). Drinks and dessert separate. Pay at the register and find your seat. There is quite the after-church crowd here usually. Waitresses(??) stop by your table to help with refills and anything else you may need. My real problem was that because it was raining outside, there was a vent inside that was over our table dripping water… I notified the waitress and even though her original response sounded like she was going to do something about it, she didn’t…so it splashed in my food(yum!) and kept splashing on my hand(sweet!). Either way, I’ve been to this location and it’s the first time it’s happened so I don’t hold it against them much. There is a separate entrance for take out and a close, covered drive way for picking up passengers.

It is a cafeteria after all! It has been several years since we thought to go to Lubys, but this morning the food taste, price, and variety was amazing. We got there at 11:00 for lunch so everything was fresh from the kitchen, so we loaded up the trays like we were on a cruise. For the 2 of us it came to $ 27.00, 2 fish plates, 2 salads, 3 veggie sides, etc. will be back. Liked that we could see what we were getting before ordering, that’s a cafeteria!

I recently visited the Luby’s located at 8176 North Mo-Pac Expressway, Austin, TX78759 This is my second time there and service has not been good. This time, the Manager was not a nice individual. The amount that was quoted on some food stated an amount but I was charged a different amount. We tried to explain but he would not hear of it. He does not have the manners to be in that position, he is very rude. The manager displayed very poor customer service. He did not honor the price that was quoted to us by the server and when we said we did not want the entre, he returned it, I assume, back to be served again. He was very rude and very loud. He could have taken a more diplomatic approach and he might have made a returned customer, but as it is we will not go back there.

Poor customer service. I work in the service industry too and I’m a pretty easy going guy. Asked a question about why breakfast ends at 11a when their website says 12p. Got a rude response and she made it apparent that I was bothering her. Work on treating your customers better. This review is for the Lubys off of mopac and steck.

I recently visited the Luby’s located 8176 North Mo-Pac Expressway, Austin, TX78759, and to my surprise it has not really changed at all for the most part. The décor has changed slightly, and the environment still has the same feel it did when I was a child. The food was never that great, but never that bad. Food at Luby’s is what it is, and that is simple fare with usually a great selection. I went with an old tried and true favorite the fried fish, cabbage, and black-eyed peas. My friend had vegetable soup with a salad. My meal was just what I thought it would be good, but not great. The surprise was the soup and salad; the salad was one that you could build by request, and they offer a nice selection of ingredients. The salad was by far the best thing about the meal. The neat thing is you do get what you see, so when you’re walking down that line pick what looks good to you, and don’t blame anyone if you don’t make the best selection possible. The service was nice; all the employees were knowledgeable and helpful. As stated the place has not changed, except for the fact that there was hardly anyone in the cafeteria; so you are able to have your pick of tables. The only odd thing was the waitress. A waitress in a cafeteria? It seems that if you walk down a line, pick your food, walk to your table, and put away your tray, why would you need a waitress? The only thing I saw useful from this waitress was that she had straws. We had gotten our straws from the beverage area, so we were not able to partake of one her straws. The sad thing is at the time we discovered there was a waitress we had already paid our bill. Next we both discovered we had no cash(as usual). So we were faced with not being able to tip a waitress that gave us no discernable service, and that was not a good feeling. We got over it and exited the cafeteria when the waitress was offering straws on the other side of the dining room. We both promised to bring cash the next time so that we could tip the waitress who offers no type of waiting work.

Would have gotten 4 stars but some of the people that work there are quite sullen and some are down right rude. I don’t think I have ever seen any of them smile or be friendly. The interior is really nice and modern.(not your old school Luby’s). The food is awesome. Baked fish, mac n chees, and greens. Can’t go wrong on Wed and Sat when kids eat free!

Oh my god! Luby’s is so much better than 10 years ago! I love the food options. My family & I eat out quite a bit and this is a nice, quick American option. The Buffett is not self serve, so cleanliness is not an issue. Family friendly. Fried or grilled fish, chicken fried steak, enchiladas, turkey or chicken breast, salad, Mac & Cheese, green bean casserole, rolls, corn bread, desserts… Really who doesn’t like that? Its line a Thanksgiving feast. I downgraded to 3 stars because they close at 8pm!!! Get with the times Luby’s! 5 people were running in at 7:56 to catch the Buffett, including my family. It’s important to conform to society standards and needs when you are a business. Why the resistance on this one?

I’ve always been a fan of Luby’s for many years. This is a great location and the staff works hard to get it right.

This place is off the chain! Fried okra will take your tastebuds to another level. Remember the bonus round at the end of Mario? It’s like that, but with more crunch. The fish and tartar is a staple, but if you’re really feeling crazy, get the jello. Hello! Gary complained it was at best comparable to his grandma’s cooking. I think Li’l G needs to talk to his granny about that!

How is it that the Pappas family can run a chain of enjoyable restaurants, yet so totally ruin Luby’s? I don’t get it. I’m sure I’ll eat here again, but strictly because of the convenience factor. What hit me this time? Not the lack of salads, not the way they clump all the jalapenos in one place in the cornbread, the plastic glasses, not the way the chopped steak tastes like liver, not the bizarre perceived need to make you think you’re in a «restaurant». No, what really disturbed me is this: they are now serving coffee in tiny styrofoam cups. It’s just insulting. Shame on you, Luby’s. Shame.

A friend told me about this place. I had to order a qt of their mac and cheese. This place is kind of hidden if you’re not familiar with the area. I was greeted as soon as i got in the door. The staff were friendly. The price was reasonable. If you’re looking to buy a side for pot luck, then this is the place to go to.

I had 3 hours of car work to be done nearby, so thought I’d walk here for dinner and hang out. It was not crowded so got through the line quickly. Chick fried chick w/mashed taters and gravy, a salad, wheat roll and an iced tea. $ 14 before tip. Maybe, I didn’t understand how to order? The salad was swimming in dressing, should have sent it back. The chick fried chick was good and the taters were ok, but all was salty. The wheat roll was excellent! I was stuffed by the time I finished and the waitresses earned the tip I left by keeping my tea full for 2 hours. I saw lots of families with kids eating here with lots of food on their tables. Maybe there are kid’s prices??? Anyway, I likely won’t be back. Next time, I’ll find a mechanic closer to a restaurant that I like.

One of my good friends refers to this Luby’s as «God’s waiting room». He’s pretty close to right. Dine in with the octagenerians and indulge yourself with the best canned food Sysco Foods has to offer(that has sat under the lights for the last three hours). It’s loaded with sodium and preservatives and come to think of it… why do I come here? Oh yeah. The liver and onions is superb and they always pile it on. 3 stars. Cheap, predictable and ample parking.

I thought the food was mediocre and the prices were outrageous. I do not plan to go back. I had never been before, so it holds no sentimental value for me. My fiancé and his brother grew up eating the Lu Ann Platter so I tagged along to see what the rave was all about. I figured that it would fill me up, and $ 6 seemed reasonable for a good meal, so I gave it a shot. I ended up with a Lu Ann platter — I got fried fish, mac & cheese, and corn, with a whole wheat roll. Like I said, the food was mediocre — not bad, but considering how unhealthy it was, it didn’t even taste that good. The roll was GLISTENING with butter… I won’t return

I’ve eaten here several times, but I’d like to concentrate on the lunch experience I had on April 9, 2005. Yes, it was a long time ago, but it was extremely memorable. My boyfriend-at-the-time(BATT) and I ate lunch there on our way to do some hiking. We sat by a window in the back of the restaurant. It was my idea to sit next to the window, which I soon regretted. Directly behind me was a cabinet filled with condiments which made it a little difficult to get into my seat, but I managed. My BATT sat right next to me instead of across from me. The food was excellent that day. In fact, I think it was BATT’s first trip to any Luby’s, and so far he was enjoying the food and experience. And there were no «waiters»(or «fetchers», as I like to call ‘em) yet at this Luby’s, so that was also a plus. That’s when everything went to hell. I was looking lovingly at BATT when suddenly his eyes bugged out of his head. He was staring out the window. I turned to look, when suddenly I heard and felt a tremendous thud in the wall beside me. As I finished turning to look out the window, a car burst through it, shattering the glass everywhere. The car’s grill was almost in my mouth. I couldn’t move because I was so shocked. My BATT grabbed my arms and started to pull me up, and that’s when I went into action. It was difficult to get out of the seat because of the stupid condiment cabinet behind my chair, but I kicked off my flip-flops and dove underneath a nearby table. The restaurant was strangely silent. I suddenly had a flashback to the Luby’s massacre in Killeen in 1991. I thought surely someone was copycatting that incident. My BATT and I had just consummated our relationship that morning, and everything was all nice and romantic and lovey-dovey. Pigeons were cooing as we walked into that Luby’s. Doves brought us our napkins. Heart-shaped bubbles filled the air. The floor was filled with soft pearly-white clouds. Angels were floating by playing harps. Y’know… LOVE. So what better way to end the day than by being murdered as we ate a leisurely lunch? I lay there underneath that table starting to cry because I didn’t want to die at age twenty-mumble. My BATT suddenly grabbed my arm again and yelled, «Are you okay!!!» «A gun? Does he have a gun? Why are you not hiding?!» I blathered. My BATT was confused and took a minute to think, and then he understood what I meant. «Oh no,» he said, «it’s just some dumb old lady in a Cadillac.» In my mind, twenty minutes had gone by since the moment I heard and felt that loud thud, but really it was only about one minute. The restaurant manager came over next, and she and BATT helped me into a chair. I was wearing the absolute worst outfit for a restaurant-car wreck: Daisy Duke shorts, flip-flops, and a cut-off tank top. Should’ve planned better. I had glass inside my panties, folks. And down my shirt. Other than that, I have a scar on my left leg, and I twisted my left ankle. The manager(wish I could remember her name) was extremely helpful during the whole ordeal. She and her employees got me napkins, water, more iced tea, everything. And this was all without me asking for any of it! Super cool. The manager gave me her card and assured me and BATT that we were not expected to pay for our meals that day. And since we only got about halfway through our food, she gave us a $ 25 gift card to use at any Luby’s. She told me if I ever needed *anything* in relation to this incident, to just give her a call at any time. Awesome. BATT never wanted to go back, but I made him. The patrons in the restaurant, however, were very annoying. They formed a line and each walked by VERYSLOWLY to gawk at me with open mouths(some of the old farts had food in their mouths at the time). They treated me like a sideshow freak. Asses! Or perhaps they were all so taken with my incredible beauty that they couldn’t concentrate enough to close their mouths. I don’t know if that manager still works for Luby’s, but she was a class act, as were her employees. I’ve been back to that location many times, and I’ll go back again.
