I feel like you can’t really go wrong with the Buffalo Hottie at Man Bites Dog. The Vienna beef frank is plump and just right, served on a soft bun. The combination of the bleu cheese crumbles, buffalo wing sauce, and green onions on the frank makes for a satisfying mix of hot, sweet, and cheesy. The service is as prompt as may be expected from a hot dog place. Worth a visit!

Had the Big Fat Greek dog. Yummy and filling. The bun was really nice too. Very soft, not dry. The prices are much better than at Frank and the dogs are larger and more filling. I didn’t even finish the bag of chips I got to go with. They don’t give out numbers, so I was also impressed with the cook’s ability to remember who ordered what and bring it to our table.

OK so my first experience at MBD was OK. here is my bar… Chicago. i think they set the bar for hot dogs. so of course i ordered the Abe Froman as that is billed as the ode to Chicago dogs. Well it was close but not close enough. first big miss, poppy seed bun. it’s a must on a Chicago dog. second miss? the relish. don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t Chicago-style. BUT, I did see some other tasty treats on the menu and given the favorable reviews on this site, I will go try another one.

beat me to a review of Man Bites Dog, so I’ll repost it: «Characterless, common, conventional, decent, dull, humdrum, indifferent, inferior, insignificant, intermediate, mainstream, mean, medium, middling, moderate, no great shakes, ordinary, passable, run-of-the-mill, so-so, standard, tolerable, undistinguished, unexceptional, uninspired.» Moral of the story? If you needed help deciding between eating a baseball cleat or the Brat at Man Bites Dog, I can’t help you.

Stopped by today for lunch. Ordered the Abe Froman… Vienna beef frank with yellow mustard, diced onions, sweet pickle relish, tomatoes, a dill pickle spear & celery salt. Yum! They also accept the Go Local card, so I saved 10%. Woo hoo!

Mmm… Hot Dogs, excuse me Veggie Dogs. A diverse menu of different hot dog favorites, with the bonus of vegetarian chili, which I am looking forward to trying. I got the Reuben Dog, overflowing with sauerkraut! Delicious. The cart is parked in a gas station parking lot very close to UT, and I think is thus far my favorite hot dog(veggie dog) experience in Austin to date. Also they take credit cards! On the downside, kind of expensive. Running about $ 6 for a dog and chips. Oh, and don’t be fooled by the deceptive menu, although only one dog listed is labeled vegetarian, they can make any of their dogs veggie.

Had the Brat, a pretty enormous sausage(snicker, snicker) topped with spicy brown mustard and sauerkraut. It was pretty tasty — loved the bun, which was big and perfectly fluffy in texture. However, they boil their brats, and I missed the extra flavor that comes from frying or grilling on a grate over charcoal. I’d probably come back if I was in the area, but I won’t go out of my way unless I’m really craving a weenie.(snicker, snicker)

Hot Dog Trailer with a cute name and tasty dogs! I love the fact that they have a dog named the«Abe Froman» — which I tried for lunch today. It’s a good hot dog, but not exactly a Chicago Dog. It’s missing the hot peppers for one thing. The dogs and buns are lightly grilled which gives everything an extra little kick. I’d give these guys higher marks, but I think $ 5.50 for a hot dog is just a bit too expensive. Especially for a food stand located away from the bar district(I’d expect to pay more near the bars). Sure its a bigger hot dog that you’d get at most other places, but it’s still just a hot dog. $ 3.75 for a basic hot dog with mustard is kinda steep for me in these frugal times. Or maybe I’m just a cheap bastard? You decide.
