Just gave the one star to get everyone’s attention. We are actually the owners of and THE toymakers at Rootin’ Ridge. It is not appropriate to review our own business, and we will not do so here. However, we want to let folks know that after 40+ years of hand-making wooden toys in Austin, we will be closing our doors after Christmas of this year. Thanks to everyone for their support over the past 4 decades. Please stop by to say«farewell» before this December. Very Best Regards, Georgean and Paul Kyle Rootin’ Ridge Toymakers

I had to be in the area today so I figured I’d check this place out, expecting high prices on limited items. Instead I found a charming little shop with a friendly operator selling really great stuff for incredibly reasonable prices. I honestly don’t know how they’ve stayed in business so long with such great prices on handmade stuff, but I’ll be back again for sure! I just did a pile of Christmas shopping for my 6 month old(she loves the wooden teether toy I bought her more than any plastic one we’ve ever offered and I’m less paranoid about it breaking and choking her… and it was only three bucks!), and I plan to bring my 8 year old in sometime as a reward for good behaviour. It’s really nice to know that I can do that and let her pick something she can afford with her own allowance, plus shop for more elaborate items for birthday and Christmas. I wish I’d tried this store sooner and I heartily encourage everyone with kids in their life to go to this shop for their holiday shopping right away. When the 6 month old starts walking, I’m coming back for some of their incredibly adorable all-wood pull toys, again for fantastically reasonable prices. The part about supporting a local independent artist(whom you can see at work right there in his studio) is just delicious icing on an already amazingly good cake.

This store is ADORABLE!!! I wanted to buy everything. It’s very small so if there were more than a few kids in there at once it might get crazy, but when we were in it was only my kid so he had plenty of room to sit on the floor and play with the display toys which was great! Prices are higher than plastic toys but these will last! The custom stools and tables are super cute too.

It was great to find a toy store which sold great wooden toys made right out of the store. I bought some gifts for a variety of children. The toys were very simple yet beautiful. It as refreshing to see such beautiful simplicity. I also thought the prices were very reasonable considering the craft.

I have quite the aversion to just about any mainstream toy that can be found at your local big box store especially if they come with plastic and batteries. I stumbled across this toy shop when I went to get my hair cut upstairs. I was amazed and in awe. I loved all the handmade toys that could be found there. The quality of these toys is something you just don’t see many places anymore. I bought each of my 3 daughters their own toy that was made by the master toy-maker himself. I will be supporting this store and visiting it first whenever I need a gift for my own children or someone else’s.

Businesses and quality like this are a dying thing in this day and age at that’s why its such a treat to see people like the Rootin’ Ridge folks forge ahead. The quality of their work is excellent, the toys are unique and their prices were extremely reasonable. Stores like this are exactly what people should be supporting. Stop by and check out this neat little shop and boutique.

We’ve been to Germany and France and have seen many wooden toys made there. It is wonderful to find such a toy store here in Austin. The owners have been making wooden toys for decades and they and their store are a true Austin gem. It’s fun to browse and buy a toy or two from such a charming store where quality and traditional toy-making are paramount!

Located in the pleasant 26 Doors plaza, this toy store is an Austin gem. The couple that owns it have been making toys here since 1975. That’s right, making them — in their wood working shop right in the store. You can watch them cut and sand and everything. They can custom make stools, toychests, wheeled riders and more. The owners are very laid back and kind. They will happily special order things for you and they will never make you feel pressured to buy things. Everything in the store is open for children to touch and play with. In addition to the toys they make, they also carry manufactured wooden toys from companies like Haba and Ryans room. Everything is high quality and beautiful — you don’t have to worry about toxic paints and finishes. Once you are their customer list, you will receive a discount card(20%!) in September. We’ve used this before to buy larger items for Christmas gifts.(We got a lovely wooden play kitchen and a castle with figures). They even have«layaway»(what toy stores do layaway anymore?) and will keep the item in their shop until December.
