We love this place. The pizza is amazing, but all the side dishes are wonderful as well.

We really enjoyed our recent trip to St. Philip. Service is a big reason we’ll be coming back to St. Philip. We ordered Polenta Fries and the Meatball pizza. The Meatball pizza was spicy, but it was very flavorful. Their chocolate mousse cake was a sweet way to leave a lasting impression on me. Great atmosphere, great food!

Heading down to South Austin is a bit of a trek for us that we don’t tend to make except for when we need to go to Home Goods + Home Depot + Nordstrom Rack in an all convenient area. Otherwise we don’t tend to go below the river very often. Well the aforementioned trifecta brought us all the way down this past weekend so we finally got to try St. Philip for brunch. Uchi founders: you disappoint me with this one. The bellinis we ordered were super tasty, the staff was delightful, and we didn’t try any pizza, but our two brunch plates left us hungry and dissatisfied. It’s hard to even explain the brunch items(brisket hash and breakast grinder). My grinder sandwich was weird looking and tasting, and the english muffin a bit too dense for my liking. His brisket hash looked small, sad, and underwhelming(he confirmed it was all of those things). I don’t eat much so I almost never leave a place hungry, but I could not get through that sandwich. Ate all the salad, though. So there’s that. We will probably give this place one more swing through for the pizza, but even if that’s great there’s just about no reason to make the 20 minute trip down when we have Via 313, East Side Pies, and soon enough Burn.

Been here on multiple occasions for lunch with coworkers. Less than polite hostesses were reluctant to seat us missing 2 people but did anyway saying«Just so you know for next time, we don’t seat incomplete parties.» Uh okay. Why are you seating us then? Besides rude service from the hostess, we were saddened to find a much shorter menu that basically got rid of all the menu items that weren’t pizza. No meatballs. No steak sando. It was disappointing to say the least. I like the food and I’ve had good service in the bakeshop, but recent attitude from the hostesses and a big change in the menu means a drop in my star rating.

What a difference one and a half years has made with this restaurant. I had complained about running our of many of the entrees on the menu but now it’s a moot point since they don’t offer these anymore(?). Now St. Phillip is a full blown Pizza place and place and somewhere to drink craft beers. One main crust(I think gluten free is available) and about 10 different styles. I would have expected more choices in the kind of crust especially in a crowed town of pizza joints. No sandwiches, spaghetti or other options, just pizza and appetizers. All in all you can better spend your money and get more variety elsewhere.

This weekend I finally made it out to St Philip and was impressed with the décor, food and wine selection. We dined in during brunch on a Sunday and a short wait. We started off with a glass of wine on tap. The Rosé on tap I ordered was great and I had a taste of the red on tap(good deal at $ 7, $ 5 during happy hour) was also a solid wine. I opted for a small plate of golden cauliflower which made for a perfect light meal. Whoever came up with this delightful mixture of tender cauliflower, herbed yogurt, Marcona almond & slightly sweet golden raisins is pure genius. My dining partner ordered the brisket hash with crispy potatoes, sofrito, cheese curds topped with a fried egg and it looked phenomenal. The one small improvement I would like to see is the A/C working better. It was pretty warm inside the restaurant. I look forward to coming back for happy hour and enjoy $ 5 wines on tap $ 4 bites.

We did brunch! They could seat us immediately at their communal table and our service was consistently good throughout the meal. We started with the breads and spreads plate for the table(not worth it) and then got a couple carafes of mimosas(definitely worth it). For our meals, 4⁄6 of us got the Breakfast Grinder, which is essentially an egg sandwich with sausage and peppers. It was delicious, but the sides to choose from were exclusively salads(boo — I’m here for carbs! Potatoes? Right?) and so I hate to say that’s where they lost a star. I also tried their meatball pizza which was divine. Our whole table commented on how despite the amount of toppings on the pizza, it stayed intact for every bite. Overall, a delicious brunch spot with delicious food and fantastic service. I can’t be too mad they made me eat a salad ;)

I’ve been hearing about this place and how it’s a must-try forever and I just don’t get the fuss. We came for my birthday dinner, because I’m a girl who will always say yes to pizza, even for her 30th birthday. At 8 p.m. on a Wednesday, there was no wait for a table inside or outside. The hostesses sat us and immediately checked the box next to what’s becoming my biggest restaurant pet peeve: comically tiny water glasses. The waiter took our order for a serving of golden cauliflower and a pork & sprouts pizza(soy ginger glaze, pancetta, and brussels sprouts) to share, at which point we never saw him again until we asked for the check. The cauliflower was delicious but could’ve used a few more minutes to cook as the inside was still a little too firm. The pizza itself was great, but the brussels sprouts on top tasted more burned than crispy. I know it’s a delicate balance to perfectly roast those, I get that, but it was obvious when the pizza was placed before it that they’d gone beyond crispy into burned and anyone worth their salt in the kitchen would’ve been able to tell as well. The waiter dropped the check at our table while talking to the table behind us, never once even offering a «thanks, guys» or «have a nice night» when asking for money. No one did a courtesy lap while we were eating to ask how everything was. It was like we were forgotten once food was placed in front of us, only to be remembered once it came time to collect payment. I might go back if a friend really wants to hit them up, but in a town full of delicious pizza staffed by friendly employees(LOOKINGATYOU, SPARTANPIZZA!) I can’t imagine spending money in a place to feel forgotten while I munch on less-than-ideally cooked food.

Titaya’s(since the re-opening), Sway, and a metric ass-ton of other places that opened in Austin in recent years all fit into a distinct category of restaurant that I never used to see. fashionable but not beautiful, casual but not comfortable, youthful but without energy, and serving food that should be creative but which tastes as exciting as a high-end TV dinner. I can’t add much to my wife’s review, except to confirm our waiter’s refusal to so much as look at us was blatant. And that our pizza was burned and no one on the assembly line responsible for creating it or bringing it so much as paused in their haste to get it to our table. No real reason to go back.

Bakeshop favorites are the Banana pudding cake & elder flower Cassis Mille Feuille. Overall found the pizza menu to be tasty. The rest Menu I think is pretty simplified to so many choices for the day but they take pride in serving everything with quality ingredients. Love the laid back vibe and layout of the place. Outside seating is also available but in Texas summer heat, I’d prefer the inside. Clean upkeep and friendly staff!

There are only a few things that I need from a restaurant and all of them St. Philip ’ s does them all with a consistently high standard. First, Quality Service — They have always have a welcoming face at the front door, an attentive server for your meal and a wise bakeshop attendant who advises on the best dessert for your preference. Second, Good Food — the menu has a range of great choices, from oven roasted pizzas to making vegetables unbelievably delicious like their golden cauliflower. Third, Good Design — From the building design and décor, to the menus and to go boxes, this place has a cohesive and streamlined look that gives off the vibe of ‘relax and enjoy yourself.‘ Highly recommended.

Ok, so St. Philip is one of those restaurants that I wish I could give 3.5 stars. I’ve been here twice and both times the food was sort of bland. With that being said, the atmosphere is great, the service is decent, and the baked goods are yummy. Also, they have really reasonable beer prices. During this visit, we went on a Sunday right at the end of brunch. We actually ended up taking so long to order that they were no longer serving brunch by the time we finally got it together. Not a big deal, as I’d had their brunch before and everybody else at the table was ordering pizza anyway. I ordered the house meatballs with Parmesan brodo, which was a type of cream sauce. They were good, but just lacking in flavor a little. Last time I visited St. Philip, I had the biscuits & gravy, which they didn’t have on the menu this time. It too was kind of bland. Boyfriend ordered the NYC pizza, which was basically a pepperoni pizza. It was ok, but again, a little bland(are you seeing a trend here?). I feel like if there was such a thing as a flavor dial, I could just turn it up and this place would be awesome. Now for the desserts. St. Philip has a small bake shop as an extension to the restaurant, so you can order items from next door and they’ll be delivered to your table, or you can order off of their dessert menu. I ordered a homemade hazelnut twix bar from their bakery. It was delicious. It had a hint of a coffee flavor too. Boyfriend ordered a coconut cookie, which was fine, just not my thing. Last time we visited, we had one of their homemade chocolate whoopie pies and it was tasty too. All in all, I would totally go back and sit at the bar and have some desserts.

I’m so glad I got to go to St. Philip before leaving the ATX. It was one of the most enjoyable restaurant experiences I’ve had in a long time. I came in for happy hour for a friend’s birthday around 4. They were very accommodating to our large group and people arriving at different times. Service was phenomenal! Jonah was our server and took such great care of us. We ordered two of everything on the happy hour menu — house made potato chips, polenta fries, meatball sliders, pepperoni pull apart bread(think monkey bread but stuffed with cheese and pepperoni!), and the daily pizza option which was burrata, tomato and basil. I also enjoyed a local glass of Trebbiano on happy hour pricing. For entrees, we let Jonah take the reins. We simply asked him to pick a handful of dishes that would be good for sharing. He knocked it out of the park with a couple orders of cauliflower in yogurt sauce, ricotta mint dumplings, a pork shank, roasted carrot + avocado salad, and house meatballs. Us girls also split a couple of Caesar salads. Towards the end of the meal Jonah brought out not one but two complimentary desserts for the birthday girl. Such a nice touch! Everyone left stuffed and satisfied for around $ 30/person(before tip). I would highly recommend St. Philip and am pretty confused by the less than stellar reviews. They’ve got it goin on.

So, Monday night I’m running around this part of town paying some unexpected bills. Against my better monetary judgement, I head to happy hour at St Philip and it was worth every penny that I didn’t have to spend. On a rainy Monday around 5:30 happy hour was flowing, but the restaurant was only about half full(woohoo! I hate crowds). The place was done up nicely and we proceeded to order a few Texas beers(and they serve half-pints for this half-pint), the meatball slider, and the pepperoni pull apart. When our apps arrived, they didn’t look anything like what we expected but greatly surpassed our flavor expectations. The meatball slider is «open face» and covered in «sunday gravy» which is an amazingly delicious tomato sauce/soup. The pepperoni pull apart is a fluffy bread baked in a ceramic ramekin intermingled with pepperoni cubes and cheese. Then came the best part — a nice server tried to take my meatball slider plate, but I protested gently as I was using the pepperoni pull apart to finish all the tomato sauce. The server proceeded to get another ramekin of the Sunday gravy for me to dip in! AHHH! YUMS! We also ordered the namesake pizza that had bacon jam, ricotta, arugala. It was super tasty. Because me and the man are kind of piggly-wigglies, we also proceeded to order dessert. The blueberry soft serve was amazing and the brownie was far from boring. I want it ALL! I’ll be back as I had my eye on the banana pudding cake too! And I don’t even like dessert typically!

Came here tonight for a birthday party. Got quite a few things and weren’t really impressed by any of them. Meat balls with the Parmesan sauce were good. You get 4 of them and they have good flavor, but nothing really stood out about them as special. The cauliflower was probably the best, most unique thing we ordered. Again, good flavor, but I can make better at home. The Mac n cheese was good, but more like Alfredo. The ham in it gave it a nice twist and the bread crumbs topped it well. We built a pizza with pepperoni and sausage. It reminded me of California Pizza Kitchen, which is definitely not a bad thing. But it just doesn’t deserve the hype it’s been getting. Finally we ordered the toffee buzz brownie. It was definitely not worth the calories or the cash. I have heard the happy hour is pretty great. So I’ll probably come back sometime soon to check it out. If it’s any better I’ll add a star. Haha

I love this place. To finally have good pizza in south Austin is actually a dream come true. I love a good thin crust pizza, brick oven is just about perfect for me. But as long as the crust is a great dough, I’m a fan. This place just does it right. Consistenly. I’ve had and loved: The Cheese pizza. Might sound boring, but it being this good, I know they are doing it right. l usually add the red onion tossed in the citrus vinegrette on it, right before they bring it to our table. I love onion and citrus and its just awesome like this. The cauliflower dish. OMG, this can’t be stopped. We get it every time we come. Between the golden raisins, the herb yogurt, and the pine nuts, I’m in foodie heaven. I love each and every ingredient of this dish. It’s a must have. The Mac n’ Cheese. This one is a filler upper. It’s nothing like any MnC you’ve had before, but this take will make many happy. It’s creamy, not too cheesy, but the bacon/ham is just perfect. The shells are Orechiette, which i love. It holds the sauce but is easy to eat. The B.E.L.T. sandwich. Delicious. If you have ever been a fan of BLT’s, you’ll love this one. The bacon is thick, the egg is over hard, the bread is seedy. It’s scrumptious. Plus if you have also ever loved Vinegar and Salt chips, you’ll die. The chips are homemade awesome-ness! I love love love their chips. Come during Happy Hour 5−6pm and you can get the chips at HH prices. That and a beer here, would make a great start to an evening. Love the vibe, the location is awesome, the people are great(friendly AND helpful!). All that and good food? Yes please!

You know those places where each menu item is good, but maybe not«spectacular», and yet you just love to go there? This is that place The environment is light, airy, inviting. Tables aren’t stupidly close together, host stand is manned by smiling, attractive youngsters who make you feel welcomed. Server was attentive and friendly. Food was served in a reasonable amount of time and was yummy. Prices were reasonable. It’s in the«hood». Management was friendly and greeted our group.(Yes, we had a reservation, but I feel Suzanne is the kind of manager who understands customer service). This is a top notch establishment and I’ll visit often. What we tried: Mushroom pizza – OMG. Ignore your primal urge for red sauce and just GET it! Sausage fennel pizza– good, not great. Greasy NY Style– wonderful, not greasy Salmon – great, if smallish Mac & Cheese– OMG Carrot/avocado side – yummmmy Chocolate dessert — meh GF dessert– boo Three gripes: No HH pricing that I could find on the menu, and our server wasn’t up to speed. No GF pizza options. Honestly very poor GF options overall The very good«tap» house wine(red) was served cold. This must be fixed

We happened upon this place on a hunt for a patio on a beautiful Saturday. As we walked up we realized the patio space was in the shade and unfortunately the weather wasn’t quite warm enough for that. It was surprisingly busier than I thought it would be. I liked the way everything was set up inside. The colors were bright and the space was open. We chose to sit at the bar rather than wait for a table(but even the wait was only 20 min for how busy they were). We didn’t drink alcohol but the bartenders did a great job checking on us throughout the whole dining experience. Polenta Fries — this was delicious! It was nothing like I expected at all. The fries were fatter than I thought and it came with more quantity than I thought. The outside was nice and crunchy and the inside was nice and gooey/soft(but not to gooey). The flavor was there and not to over seasoned at all. The marinara dip also seemed fresh. Pepperoni Pizza + add on pickled jalapeño slices — this was pretty good. I wouldn’t go as for to say it is my favorite pizza but it was good enough to where I’d order a pizza from here again. The red sauce was perfect in that there was not to much and it was not overpowering the pizza. The dough was nice and thin. I do prefer a crunchier thin crust but it still worked. For how busy they were at lunch, I was super impressed with how each dish came out like it was straight out of the frier or out of the oven. Beware, the polenta fries were still super hot inside so I had to break it up in pieces and even blow on it to cool it down. This I prefer than receiving it a little bit cooler because it was so fresh and crisp. Between the two of us we still had 4 slices left for cold pizza leftovers ;). Definitely one I’d come back to. Even if it is just to order 2 orders of polenta fries just for myself…

My husband and were in the area one evening, hungry, and I had St. Philip bookmarked on Unilocal as a place to try. So… First impression — walking through the parking lot through towards the entrance saw an armed security guard(or off duty officer) escorting a female employee to the trash receptacle that was literally yards away from the building. Hmm… Having lived in Austin for only about a year and half I’m not familiar with all of the«neighborhoods» — is safety such a concern in Sunset Valley? I going on shopping sprees in the area sometimes and it always seemed fine. ?? The building itself is a beautiful mix of modern streamlined design highlighted with light colored wood throughout. Very Zen. There are ample outdoor dining tables and a lovely sitting area in case you simply want to have drinks, or perhaps if there’s a wait. The dining room is medium sized, with tables tightly packed together, and a bar on one side against the wall. No bells and whistles per se — just nice. The menu has several other options(e.g., salads, sandwiches, a hand full of assorted entrées), but we chose to give the Artisanal pizza a try at the«Parlor.» Based on the price we decided they must be more like personal pies, so we decided to order 2(that were recommended as the most popular) and share: Fennel Sausage: Sausage, lots of thinly sliced red onion, Piquillo peppers, basil, and mozzarella on a red sauce. Wild Mushroom: Ricotta, arugula and baby kale on a light umami sauce. You can top any pizza with lightly dressed greens for $ 2. RIGHT after I ordered I thought«That would be a nice addition to the lighter side Mushroom pizza-dang!» I guess the chefs agree, as the Wild Mushroom comes with the mixed greens on top — even though it doesn’t state so on the menu. Both pizzas were tasty, but not certainly not the best I’ve ever had. The crust was A-OK, but unfortunately not my favorite style. Just seemed to fall flat a bit(no pun intended); flavorless, slightly crispy, a little chewy. Super fresh toppings. Not overly heavy. NOTE: One pizza is plenty for two, especially if you also shared a salad. Turns out the fancy pies are all one size — 11 inches — which is about 8 slices. The hubby and I literally had an entire pizza left over(half of each; and we didn’t order any other food) — leftovers! I found the price tag of 10 to 15 bucks per pie, with seasonal ingredients, to be quite reasonable — given that they feed two peeps! I’d say that’s cheap eats. ST.PPP+B forces you to exit through the bakery at the back side of the building. Perused a couple of the goods and nothing stood out that I just had to have. Overall: When in the area again, I would consider going back for more pizza and perhaps a beer or two. And, I might just have to try the Mussels(I’m a sucker for them there mollusks) and definitely give the Root Beer and Sassafras Ribs a go. I dunno. Usually when a restaurant has«Pizza» in its name, it seems to be what they do best — even if was opened by the same folks as Uchi. Hey, I wouldn’t order pizza there — even if it was on the menu. Just sayin…

I went to St. Philip for brunch on a Saturday around 12:30pm. I’m not sure if it was just because of the cold weather and holiday weekend, but it was not as busy as I expected it to be. BIGOL’ BISCUIT — I had been looking forward to getting the Big Ol’ Biscuit and man was it good. It definitely is not your typical southern biscuit + gravy though, so be aware of that before ordering. The gravy is chorizo based, and is not overly spicy but has a heavy chorizo flavor. The biscuit was phenomenal(must note that even though it says the daily biscuit, it is the same biscuit every day) and was perfectly cooked. The runniness of the egg was a good complement but honestly I probably could have done without the egg on it at all. The whole thing is topped off with crunchy onions. QUICHE — I tried my friend’s quiche of the day, which was cheddar and ham. It was good. My favorite part of it was the crust, but the quiche itself could have used a sauce to accompany it. FRENCHTOAST — My friend got the French toast, which was VERY good. It had just the right amount of bacon in the streusel, and none of the flavors were too overpowering, Of course, the toast was cooked to perfection(the pros of eating at a bakery), and all of the toppings complemented it well. BELLINI — Highly recommend the bellini. Great alternative to a traditional mimosa. Overall, this place was delicious. Getting an entrée that has a baked component(i.e. biscuit, French toast), you will not fail because the bakery at St. Philip is superb. The service was very attentive re-filling our waters, but not very knowledgeable on the menu or personable. The vibe was cool but sitting right on the freeway makes the patio a little less alluring. I would come here for the food, not necessarily the ambience. Oh, and make a stop at the bakery on the way out.
