Went to hear Calling Jack Burton last night doing flasback to 80’s. Music was awesome, great dance floor. Sad thing though, younger crowd spilled their drinks on dance floor a few times, which then made floor sticky and gross. Beer. on tap is good but I ordered Capirinha and it was terrible! Asked bartender to sweeten it up and it was better but still pretty awful! They are definitely proud of their drinks since most are 10 – 11 dollars each. Definitely will go back for music.

If you want to sing karaōke in a private room, this is literally the best place I have ever been to. Although my opinion may be influenced by the crappy choices I’ve lived with for years in Dallas. Great song selection, decent service, themed rooms, and an actually modern user interface for karaōke. Came here for a 90s music night once, too. That was a ton of fun… Overall, I definitely would recommend, especially if you’re looking for a night out away from downtown.

Sometimes I wish you could choose a day or specific aspect of a place and review that. I usually have great experiences at Highball but Motown Monday? Now that’s something special. If you want to people watch, burn calories and listen to some awesome tunes at the same time, this is your jam baby. First the matchmakers melted our faces off. Then the nightowls picked up right where they left off. I haven’t sweated so much since the 100 degree temps last year because of how packed the dance floor was and because of the sweet soul stylings.

Meh. I wouldn’t come here if it wasn’t right next to the Alamo Drafthouse. Even so, I probably won’t be going back anytime soon. During my most recent trip here, the server acted like she really didn’t care to be working there. We never got an order of fries we waited on for 30 minutes. Our drinks came very late and staggered. There is no ambience here. It’s an awkward space without any personality. I’d recommend heading to one of the many nice bars and restaurants nearby rather than wasting your time and money here.

So the new revamped Highball I have mixed feelings about… However, let me get to the point. I was steered here for their Frito Pie and my first experience was more than disappointing to say the least. The frito pie came out w/cold chili and unmelted cheese and off-tasting sour cream. I brought this to our waiter’s attention and they came out w/a second attempt(that honestly was probably just them nuking it because the cheese was semi-melted, but the chili was still semi-cold and the sour cream still had a funk to it). Instead of risking possible food poisoning, I let the waiter know that«thanks, but no thanks» and they took back the uneaten FP and did not charge me for it. I came back for their Cards Against Humanity and Tittie Bingo night, which is a BLAST! You can also win free Alamo tickets and food credits! Our waitress was top notch and I decided to give the Frito Pie a second chance and told her my previous FP tale of woe and she swore the sacred oath of awesomeness that I would have a good Frito Pie experience. Soooo, when my FP came out subpar yet again, she personally took it back and demanded excellence! While the new FP I got was not mindblowing, it was waaaaay better than anything I had had up to that point and I owe it to our beautiful and gracious waitress for making my Highball Frito Pie dreams come true! I went on to win the Cards Against Humanity Twitter Post that night and had a very NC-17 time playing Tittie Bingo. I highly recommend experiencing each of these for yourself. I have not been back since, therefore I can’t speak to any of the other goings-on there, but I do know on the wknd they charge cover, so there’s that. In any case, I do see myself going back for another round of CAH and TB, but that’s probably it.

Phew, finally getting around to writing reviews. Okay, let’s go. I celebrated my birthday here in January and it was a blast. The downstairs area was super packed for the David Bowie tribute which made going to the bathroom impossible — please please please put one upstairs on the karaōke level! The hostess(a younger girl with short brown hair) was a delight. I called to apologize that I was running a few minutes late and she cheerfully said no problem. When I got there she went over the rules and set up with us and told me she’d give us an extra half hour since there wasn’t a wait and some of my friends arrived a little later. I didn’t even ask for that! She’s awesome. We had a nice bartender but he didn’t come around very often. And when he did he would forget to bring someone’s drink. He might have been over worked that night so I don’t want to blame him. One of my friends also told him it was my birthday and he just kind of shrugged it off. I didn’t want anything for free or any extra attention, but just an acknowledgment would have been nice. We had so much fun that we booked an extra hour on top of that. Overall I’m glad I spent my birthday here. Thanks, guys! And keep that hostess. She is a gem.

Choices for food and appetizers were unique for the venue but not anything I could get excited over. I had to settle for a salad I was unfamiliar with but still tasty. My friend had the Frito pie dish but didn’t finish it because it was so spicy hot. I had a glass of champagne that was OK, again, an unfamiliar name and not at all pleasing but the only champagne offered. Our server, Brittany, was very attentive and brought two different white wines to try instead of the champagne. One of them was very refreshing, can’t remember the name though. The band that played that Friday evening did popular show tunes. They were very talented and many people were on the dance floor. We plan to return for MoTown Monday but probably will eat dinner where I know the offerings much better.

Staff is distracted and aloof at best. Went with a group for karaōke and we got kicked out without a any reason, whatsoever. The room had been reserved weeks in advance for four hours and nobody was drunk, not like the people clubbing downstairs. I think the waitress was having a bad day or something, it was a black girl with the meanest face in the South. I have never been to the Highball in the past, this was my first time, but reading other reviews convinces me that this business only cares about over-charging for mineral water and ripping people off. Save your money and go elsewhere!!!

I don’t give 1-stars often but this really warrants it. It is my theory that, because of the servers/managers of this bar, my friend’s birthday night turned into a hot mess. This was Saturday night, and a 90’s tribute band played all the one-hit wonders of yesteryear with a packed, loud crowd of drunk, yuppie Millenials. The shiny dresses, loud bass of the band, and its members comprised of white boys with neon caps and shutter glasses(reminiscing of EMF) made me feel like I was in a club scene off a Drew Barrymore movie. Nevertheless, a promising start to this night, I never thought its end would leave everyone feeling a little bit empty, a little bit humiliated, definitely angsty, and all-around ripped off. This is my dissection of the services provided, followed by an elaboration of the events of that night. 1) Karaōke: — Really over priced — «room for 18 people» would fit about 11 or 12 persons of average size. Perhaps they used Austin supermodels when sizing it. — The variety of songs is so bizarre and their karaōke system VERY glitchy. Speakers are so quiet, you could not tell who was using the mic. — We were warned that if the server thought we got«rowdy» we would be kicked out. So this became a problem because: a) this is an establishment that sells alcoholic drinks, if you can’t handle slurred speech, sell apple juice instead. b) It’s up to the server’s discretion what behavior or volume is considered rowdy c) emphasizing this policy limits(if not compromises) the customer’s expectations of comfort d) anyone who drinks knows that if they can’t stay cool, they get kicked out. so emphasizing this policy was unnecessary, unless it’s especially stringent in karaōke rooms. 2) Cust Srvc/Drinks: — Server was particularly unfriendly, like the kind of person who gives a vibe that you need to walk on eggshells(and when you know she’s got the refusal-of-service card under her sleeve, it makes it even more uncomfortable). — Drinks, as all other reviews confirm, are extremely overpriced. I swear, a Lone Star beer is $ 5 and there’s nothing below that. But it’s fine, a bar’s gotta make its money, right? And we are at «The Highball» — Friends in the room adviced me to order my 2nd and 3rd drink in advance because the server takes forever.(at the time we did not know that she was serving both downstairs and upstairs, which may explain her indifferent personality). Finally, despite all of those inconveniences, there’s a point in the night when you just want to drink and forgive people for their shortcomings and enjoy. Bah! I knew my tab was around $ 50 when I promised I’d buy only two drinks for myself and one for the birthday girl. It was around midnight when the server, with the most feigned expression of regret, tells us that she would not be «extending» us another hour. She was really sorry, it was the manager’s decision. Now, I am the guy in the group who sits and just enjoys the view and I did not find a reason for her to have kicked us out. I have worked at a hotel bar where I’ve had very nasty and belligerent patrons, who just need a minute to chill. Our crowd consisted of geeky Hispanic/White 20-something yr olds singing to David Bowie and The Dixie Chicks. Yes, we were drinking(money for the business), yes we were singing(the reason why the Highball PROVIDES karaōke in the first place) and I don’t believe we were louder than the freaking live rock band downstairs. Was it because she did not want to continue climbing the stairs to bring drinks? Was it because she simply didn’t like us? Was it really the manager’s order? I don’t know, but regardless, we all eventually left, too late to go to another karaōke joint and too disgruntled to even think about anything else. I would understand if someone *did* start an argument or misbehaved, but I did not see a real reason why we were told to leave. There was no explanation to anyone. I will NEVER pay for karaōke at the Highball and will never buy a drink there again. And I love going to the Alamo Drafthouse so each time I go watch a movie, I’ll be reminded of the crappy service from this quasi-friendly bar. I will make sure I never take any friends there and spread the word that their karaōke service is not worth a damn. Alternative but amazing karaōke for anyone interested: Hi-Tunes, Austin Karaōke, Karaōke Underground.

It gives me no delight to share what I’m afraid will be a quite negative review. I am the type of person who refuses to dwell on unpleasant experiences, so that the first review I’ve chosen to post happens to be so harsh is an indication of how dreadful the Highball’s service was this past Saturday. Let me get start by sharing some of the minor issues that contributed to my negative experience at this location. Echoing what many reviewers have eloquently spoken about already, the prices are ridiculous. This is a grievance that I ordinarily would choose to ignore, since overpriced establishment are not uncommon in Austin. Then there is the fact that the private karaōke room that we reserved, which we were told could adequately host a party of 18, ended up being a very tight fit for our group of 15. By tight fit, I mean that we were almost sitting on each others laps and walking around was a bit of a chore. Yet, like the overpriced drinks, we decided this wouldn’t be a dealbreaker for us. The reservations for the room were made weeks in advance by some friends of mine, to ensure we would have a private room were we would be able to get together to celebrate someone’s birthday. Since it’s rare that we all are able to be at the same place at the same time, with everyone being spread out across the city, my friends made sure to reserve the room for as long as possible. They were told that the room would be ours until 2AM, unless whoever is our server that evening feels that we are being«too rowdy» and behaving inappropriately. We weren’t given a specific definition of what being«too rowdy» at a place that profits from selling very costly alcoholic beverages and offers private room for people to sing their hearts out meant, but we figured that as long as we remained respectful and didn’t destroy anything we would be fine. Which brings us to our server, who provided such abysmal service on that night that I don’t think I will be voluntarily stepping into the Highball anytime soon. Yes, it was that bad. From the moment she took our first order, she gave the impression she, to put it bluntly, hated her job. A sentiment not uncommon amongst all of us that have worked in the service industry, but that, if you’re doing your job properly, you cover up while tending to customers and wait to unleash until your shift is over(in the company of your co-workers, of course). To see our server so blatantly display disdain whenever she came into the room, even before any alcohol had been consumed, wasn’t pleasant. At no point in the evening did she treat any of us with the respect you would expect from an establishment on the same price range as the Highball. I could make a list of the specific instances when I witnessed her being extremely rude to one or all of us, but to sum it up, she showed absolutely no patience throughout the night, she would take so long in between taking our orders and bringing our drinks that were started bulk ordering drinks in advance(which resulted in some warm overpriced beers and watered down cocktails), and to, just in case that wasn’t enough, decided to let us know our reserved time had been cut short by almost two hours. A lovely way to end the evening! Now, as to our«too rowdy“group that was kicked out at a time were finding another place in the area to continue celebrating our friend proved too be impossible? I guess it could have been our bad singing, which was contained within the room thanks to soundproof door, that caused us to be deemed to rowdy by our server. Because of how badly we were served during that evening, most of us were far from being chaotically drunk. I can’t help but think that our serve was eager to lessen her workload, maybe too tired of having to bring the drinks upstairs? I can’t say for sure, but ultimately I can thank her for the abhorrent service she provided for us that night, since she sealed the deal for me: no more spending on overpriced drinks at Highball ever again, let alone even considering renting a room to host any type of celebrations with my loved ones. Why sour such occasions with terrible service?

This review only speaks to the Mowtown night(was it Monday?). I had an absolute blast! The band did spot on renditions and the atmosphere was was electric. It got a bit crowded as the night wore on so ordering drinks or finding your spot on the dance floor took some effort. The bartenders weren’t particularly friendly but hey, I think I get it-they were working their butts off. But the crowd — wow, the crowd! Everyone was so nice and fun; I must have made about 10 one-night friends. Next time I need to lift my spirits and get nostalgic all at once, I am going to head to the Highball on a Mowtown night.

I came here a couple of times. Once for drinks, the second time for Kareoke. The music selection was not quite up to date. I couldn’t find Sia…, and this was 2016! The staff was very nice, however. It’s a cute place to hang out with friends. The band does tend to take over the entire acoustic experience even all the way in the back behind the wall when you want to catch up with friends through talking. Maybe go else where if you want to talk.

More than half the time spent in the karaōke rooms was spent trying to fix the karaōke machines(both rooms, not just one), so we really only got a good hour of songs, and most of it was sitting around waiting for staff to fix the machines. We kept thinking to ourselves, «Didn’t this place just get built?» It was disappointing. Oh, and there’s no more bowling, which was why I liked Highball to begin with. The beer selection is good. I probably won’t attend private karaōke here ever again unless I hear they’ve updated their technology.

Darn it! I forgot to close my tab at Highball last night. When two lemondrop shots and a Topo Chico runs you $ 22, a forgotten tab is cause for concern. Though this is the«new» Highball, some things never change: it’s mostly full of d-bags, drinks take as long as Christmas, and cost about the same as Christmas, music and events can be stellar, yawnable, or an utter shit show, and you never know which, like Christmas. Dang, some reviews just write themselves, don’t they? The main thing that’s changed: it’s smaller. Seriously who’s idea was that? They should have made it the same size, doubled the bar size and number bartenders, and nixed the bowling alley for more dance floor /seating. If it wasn’t for Motown Mondays, there’d be no point for me to come here. And they can even manage to mess that up sometimes(but so did Berry Gordy ultimately). The secret to not messing it up? Don’t mess with the formula. Last night, we went at 9:45 and no music was on. None, zero zip, nada. Usually between sets they spin Motown records. Was this a funeral or a show? Then, at 10, The Nightowls were on but usually The Matchmaker Band plays the first two sets. It was as tragic as moving the label to LA, a definite“no” to switch up the order or omit the MMB altogether or whatever was going on tonight. And if there was a permanent change or temporary change, the singer from NO could have said or if the event actual had a host, maybe that person. Also, some jerk almost ran me over when I was coming out of the ladies room and you can bet, even in heels, hose, and a nice dress, I shoved him back and the only reason I didn’t push him hard enough to fall over was because I didn’t want him to fall into the innocent people behind his stupid ass. And some dude was trying to do the chicken dance with my friend which mostly consisted of him jutting his butt awkwardly in her direction over and over. And another dude was trying time do swing dancing with his date, which mostly meant throwing her into nearby dancers. And then a lot of people were almost dancing in a line. Like line dancing. To Motown. Yep, utter shit show. We’ll be back, but with more prepartying, probably not dressed a nice, cause what’s the point?, and paying with cash so I can understand exactly how two shots and a mineral water costs a week’s worth of my allowance in 1996.

Nu Highball is decorated with the remains of its predecessor whose absence is still felt on South Lamar. Looking at the slats of wood that once formed the bowling lanes leaves me reminiscing for that pre/post-Alamo activity. Nowadays I only rarely stop by Highball to grab a drink before a late night movie. Supposedly the karaōke is fun but has long wait times and is rather expensive. You can take your drink from Highball into the Alamo Drafthouse for your movie. Or at least I always do and no one has ever told me otherwise.

Great location for karaōke and perfect for a celebration after watching a movie at the Alamo draft house! My favorite night is Motown Monday with the matchmaker band followed by the night owls. Both bands have a great arrangements a brass section great musicians and singers and really bring it every time! There are always a handful of good dancers for partner dancing. And of course everyone can just bust a move on their own on the dance floor that used to be a bowling alley floot.

This place is awesome! And kind of a hidden gem. Being connected to a movie theatre, on face value, doesn’t do it any favors to be honest. But if you give it a shot you’ll be pleasantly surprised. A large bar with a dance floor and good music and monthly recurring events like 90s Dance Party! We’ve had a blast every time we’ve come here. The drinks are reasonably priced and you can generally get a solid cocktail if they’re not slammed. Worth a try!

What an awesome place! It’s tucked away in the Alamo Drafthouse so just park in the parking lot for Alamo Drafthouse and then go to the front entrance and it will be to the right. It has a full bar as well as tables to eat and drink with groups. I went with my work friends and it’s a Tuesday night. Wasn’t too fun. They have Tittie Bingo on Tuesdays at 10pm and its exactly what you’re thinking… The karaōke is AWESOME! You get your own private room. We had 8 in our room and I think we couldn’t have fit many more. The songs are so up to date but they have so many classics. The karaōke system is so awesome and easy to navigate. Our waiter was super attentive and helpful. You can order snacks and drinks from him and he will deliver. We got garlic fries which were amazing. The cheese platter wasn’t as good. I got the Grapefruit Sky drink and it was pretty good! It wasn’t an artificial taste at all. It tasted like freshly squeezed grapefruit juice! I would definitely definitely come back to this place again.

I like the Highball a lot but it is not my crowd. Every time I walk in there I want to punch someone in the face. Most of the clientele seems like grade A douchebags with an entitlement complex. Outside of that the bar staff is great. As with the entire Alamo family they are friendly and helpful. Love the karaōke rooms. The food has gotten better with the remodel. Also they have a photo booth in case you want a strip of pictures to remember your evening by(which may be useful considering how strong the cocktails are.

This review is for the karaōke room: I was surprised by how affordable their room rental rates are given Highball’s now high-end district and new swanky renovation. My group of 8 friends rented the smallest room for two hours and only had to pay $ 5/person. THAT’S A STEAL! Some pros: +Great hourly rate for karaōke room rentals +Bar food/drinks menu is available to order from the room with great service +Two screens for song lyrics so you can see the words no matter which direction you face Some cons: +The room is pretty cramped for their recommended max. limit of people(ex: for 8 people, only 6 people can fit in the seating area and they assume that 2 people will be standing up to sing at all times) +Not enough table space to put drinks and food… it caused us to not order any food because we didn’t know where we’d put it +You’ll find the song you want maybe 60% of the time(probably not Highball’s fault; I assume it’s copyright issues) Overall, we left very pleased with our night out and with very sore throats. I would come back and maybe stay longer to hang out downstairs on the dance floor. ;)

The Highball Phoenix that arose after the previous version was razed along with its neighboring classic Austin businesses is smaller, darker, swankier, and way less funky than the original rendition. The bowling alley and games tables are gone, but the Karaōke rooms(not my thing, ’cause I can’t sing) and the dance floor and bar area have been recreated in a more compact form that reflects the outer modern architectural design, which reminded me of a bomb shelter built from stacked charred sticks and sheet metal. It’s no longer Austin retro, it’s more like modern downtown Big Band era with a side of Steampunk. You might have a tough time finding it from Lamar, because you can’t see the sign. Look for the Shake Shack, then turn between the two black rectangular buildings toward the Alamo Drafthouse. It’s nestled in the right armpit of the Alamo. Motown Mondays are back, with the fabulous Matchmaker Band at 9PM(no cover), and a local dance instructor still offers a free hour-long group swing dance lesson at 8PM. Plenty of couples were taking him up on that last Monday. But here’s the thing: the dance floor is narrower, with booths on one side, the bar on the other, and the restrooms all the way at the back, so there isn’t much room to swing dance when there’s a big crowd. It almost looks like a long, wide bowling lane, especially with the hardwood plank flooring. So most of the pro swing dancers who used to frequent the Highball are gone, along with their cool retro costumes. Our group was content to «pack-dance» for just about the entire evening. And it was fun. The drink menu is a veritable book of designer mixed drinks that run up to around $ 10, various beers($ 4 – 6 average), and a few wines. I scanned it, grew bored reading descriptions, and just ordered a mixed call drink. They didn’t stock my Austin-based chosen brand. What? Our group’s mixed drinks were disappointingly weak. They also have food, but I doubt many people are going here to eat dinner, so it’s mostly quick bites at less than modest prices. We didn’t order food, because we were there to dance. I tried to pay the server for my drink, but strangely, he said no and disappeared for hours. He then presented me with a check on a tray, as if it were a restaurant. I gathered they’re wanting everyone to run a tab. I like to pay cash as I go, thanks. Parking in the adjacent garage to the right is free, but the lot was tight and full, largely due to the fact that there are now a lot of other businesses that share it. A friend valet-parked at the restaurant down by Lamar. If you do this, be aware that they close at 11PM. Overall, I’d go for a fun themed evening or a cocktail if you’re in the area, but don’t expect the old Highball. Sometimes it’s better not to have the blueprints of old Austin with you when you’re heading downtown. It is what it is, and it ain’t what it was.

My friends and I went for ‘90s night and it was awesome! There’s nothing like losing yourself on the dance floor to a little Destiny’s Child, Britney, Puff Daddy, Coolio, Spice Girls, and ‘90s techno jams! Rhythm is indeed a dancer. The only downer of the night was the jerk bartender. Upon arrival, I ordered a birthday drink for my friend and a soda and lime for myself because I wasn’t drinking that night. The bartender asks if I want to open or close my tab. I say close. He rolls his eyes and tells me not to be opening and closing a tab all night because they’re busy. Believe me, man, after your unnecessary attitude, I wouldn’t have been ordering drinks anymore even if I was drinking. He proceeds to say other unnecessary things about how he’s actually being a nice guy. I’m not seeing it, dude. Just make the drinks and let me go dance. Despite the rough arrival, my friends and I danced the night away. The DJ was awesome and I love how the music videos played on the screen. It was such a great throwback night!

HAPPYHOURREVIEW: This is an excellent place to stop in for some happy hour or bites before you see a movie because of its proximity to Alamo. However, they may be beaten out by competition after a while since there are some really tasty places popping up and I fear they won’t be able to compete on some food quality items. The interior is very swanky and I felt like I was back in a NYC lounge. I really loved the overall feel and the furniture. The service was decent however; I think items could have been delivered quicker. The bathrooms were also very stinky and dirty so, I would wait until you venture to Alamo to use theirs. Food Break Down: Garlic Fries with Garlic Aioli: The fries were cooked well but, the fresh garlic was too plentiful and overpowering, especially in conjunction with the garlic aioli. I am a huge, can’t get enough, garlic fan so, for me to say that it has to be excessive. Fried Chicken: It definitely had the burnt-esq taste to it so, it was hard to pick up on the other flavors besides that. The chicken was juicy on the inside and the portion size was good but, I would pass on this next time. Deviled Eggs: They were unique in flavor and the blend of spices worked well together. I especially liked the mustard caviar on top but, they were kind of runny. They should have been chilled for a bit longer in my opinion. Cocktails: This is where they have a win! The discount happy hour champagne was an amazing quality compared to other happy hour discount champagne that I have had around town! Definitely stop in for the happy hour pricing on adult beverages!

I went there totally in a whim with a group of friends. We got there around 10 and the next karaōke room was not going to be open until 11:30. We decided to hang around and get drinks and wait. There were really not that many people there which felt odd to me since it was a Friday night. It was strangely bright and open(since nobody was there) so we sat in a booth drinking $ 9 cocktails and watching three couples awkwardly dance. It was really nice inside but it didn’t seem like the place I wanted to wait around in for an hour and a half until our room opened. Then something awesome happened. At 10:30 the lights dimmed and the DJ announced that it was 90s Night! Everyone freaked out(excitedly) and got up to start dancing to the backstreet boys. Above the stage, music videos were projected on a huge screen. It was so nostalgic and amazing that we decided to cancel our private room and jam out with our fellow 90s music fans. The place quickly got crowded and everyone was having a great time dancing! Bonus– glow sticks were given out. Seemed like a perfect place for a ladies night, but my guy friends agreed that the night was epic.

I think the Highball is quite an overrated spot. I was here for a trivia event, and first up, what’s with the $ 5 flute of mimosa. Its cheap champagne with tropicana. I mean if you hand squeezed the juice out and used some fancy champagne I would understand the pricing, but that’s not the case at all. Ok the shishito peppers are actually really good. The fries are good too. But that’s where it ends when it comes to vegetarian food. The other flatbread you guys were out of. Again the prices for these little servings are kind of not justified. I would say step it up a notch Highball. Be more creative, if you’re gonna charge that kind of money.

On the advice and beckoning of a friend, we popped in to hear The Monster Big Band on a recent Tuesday. They are fantastic! Each band member is a singular talent and the whole is amazing with 15 members the night we were there. Billy Murphy, a local lawyer, accompanied them belting out wonderful songs reminiscent of the, well, you guessed it, «Big Band Era»! Drinks can be pricey. My $ 9 wine came in a tiny 4 oz glass but it was good. I don’t miss the bowling at all. The Highball has returned with more class and, thankfully, the average patron’s age has been raised by at least 10 years.
