The Shack Food Store

This is my first visit to this IHOP. I have always been a big fan of IHOP however after today I will not be returning this location. After waiting ten minutes to be seated I sat at a table for 30 minutes without even being aknowledges or even offered water. I decided to get up and leave and wont be returning.

First of all let me say that this place was a solid 4 in my book. They have a decent snack and drink selection, the hot foods are tasty, breakfast tacos are awesome and cheap. The cigarettes are quite a bit more expensive than the other convenience stores near here, but I would choose this one for convenience. It’s always really clean and the gentlemen behind the counter are always nice.
That being said, after tonight I will not return. I often go late at night, within an hour of their midnight close, and there is a black man they have employed to help clean and close up the store who is there on these occasions. Every time I go in there he glares so hard and with so much anger at me that I can feel his eyes on me. I almost always grab a soda from the front bin and because I can tell that some care was put into arranging it I am careful to not disrupt things much and shift things back so it remains even. Every time I get a drink he stands practically on top of me and huffs and puffs. So tonight I ask what his problem is because I’m OVER it, to which he raises his voice to say repeatedly «did I say anything to you?! Have I ever said anything to you?!». I point out that he doesn’t have to. He makes sure to loudly and sarcastically tell me «you have a nice night».
I told the guys behind the counter that I won’t be back. He makes me uncomfortable. I shouldn’t be made to feel bad about buying a soda. Plus, behind his eyes are anger and violence. After I left tonight I couldn’t help but look behind me all the way home for fear he would be there.
I’m not easily intimidated, and I don’t tend to let people dictate my life in such a way, but in this instance I’m bowing out and will walk a mile instead of a few blocks. Zero of my dollars will be going into his paycheck.

This store is very close and convenient. They sell hot food from BBQ items like chop beef sandwiches and also breakfast tacos almost anyway you want them. Also as hot food goes they have hamburgers, fried chicken, fried burritos like HEB would sell potatoe wedges and much more. They sell a little bit of everything in the store, items you might not find in other convenient stores you can find here at the Shack, like Onions, Tomatoes, Lemons, Chorizo and so on. If it was a convenient store I would trade 1 of our store around here for that 1.

I just moved to the east side and one of my first order of business was finding a good breakfast taco — and close. I found it in the last place I would look — a convenience store. for $ 1.40 I get a tasty chorizo and egg taco. Well packed and hits the spot. Each morning I see alot of City of Austin guys in here loading up for the day. To tell you the truth I haven’t even looked at the actual convenience store part of it — my only trips here have only been to the food part. They also serve lunch there — but have not tried it. If you live close jump in here and get you some breakfast already.

As a convenience store it’s a 3 or a 4. They have a decent selection of cold beer and all the other amenities one looks for within a convenience store (with the notable exception of gasoline pumping stations).
The reason the Shack Corner Store gains a notable 5 stars is that they make inexpensive, delicious breakfast tacos with homemade green salsa. All the major breakfast taco ingredients are available in any combination you desire: Cheese, Eggs, Chorizo, Sausage, Potatoes, Beans, etc. but they also server chicken and beef ranchera tacos as well as barbacoa with pico de gallo or even Asada. I have found every combination (with the exception of sausage) extremely tasty.
Finally, they run a decent special for people ordering for large families or their office. For every 8 tacos you purchase in a single visit, you get one for free.
Order in advance by phone if you have a large order. This is one of those out of the way hole in the walls that the locals make part of their daily ritual.
