Overall a decent place, I didn’t eat here though. I went for HH on a Friday and was impressed with their HH menu. They have $ 1 Lonestars, $ 2 glasses of wine, and $ 3 margaritas, AFAIR. The staff was alright, the bartender was fairly cool, a waitress I spoke with was friendly and helpful, while another waitress was stressed out and was storming around the restaurant. Overall a cool diner-esque place.

I just came here for the second time in a week and I love it! It was great for an office luncheon today and a New Years lunch last week! The vegetables… or they should just call them sides since they include stuff like Mac and cheese are all delicious and there are a lot of options. I realized today the 3 veggie plate is kinda expensive compared to some of the entrees since it’s the same price($ 9.95) and the entrees come with 2 veggies. The 5 veggie plate is a little better for only $ 2 more. I got the king ranch chicken since the entrée was the same price as one of the 3 veggies and it was really good. Favorite sides are collard greens, Mac and cheese, fries and caesar salad. Plan on coming back more often!

2.5 stars with the extra for the atmosphere so rounding up. I was taken here by a friend and from the parking lot in I liked this place. That is until the food arrived. The chicken fried steak had way too much breading and the gravy was just OK. They give you a ton of portion size that you could bring almost half home with you but I hate to say I didn’t really want to. The history of the place is cool and looks like a great dive to hang out.

I was told I had to go here as a newbie to Austin. I’m not sure why, but at least I can say I’ve done it. I’d give three for the food, but two overall b/c the prices were way too high for the food quality. What I had: — Cheese Stuffed Jalapeños — better than Sonic! Actually, these were very good. The breading wasn’t overwhelming and it didn’t slide off the popper when you bite into it. Solid app. — Chicken Fried Chicken w/Gravy — First: GETTHEGRAVYONTHESIDE!!! It will ruin the chicken if they pour it over it. Thankfully, I’m glad I ordered it on the side. Gravy aside, the chicken itself was actually quite good! Still moist and not dry, tasty breading, solid! — Mashed Potatoes w/Gravy — meh, they taste a little gritty and had small, undercooked chunks. Ugh, the white gravy was not good. It’s hard to describe the taste; it wasn’t quite bland, but it was the wrong flavor for what you expect from a gravy(and what you want to put on your potatoes). — Garlic Cheesy Grits — meh, decent. You can taste the garlic and cheese w/o the garlic becoming overwhelming. But it’s very chunky, like very quickly made grits instead of slow cooking it in a pot for several hours. Not smooth at all. — Jalapeño Cornbread — very dry. — Rolls — soft, fluffy, buttery, yum.

Three of us ate today and not one of us will be back. $ 4.95 for a kitchen spoon of black eye peas or a scoop of cabbage. Five veg plate is how much ! ? The corn bread muffins are bland, rubbery and oily

Went to Sunday brunch at Threadgill’s today for I think my fourth time and it didn’t disappoint! I love the Austin vibe, the great service, excellent food(best cooked bacon ever), and the fact that my son and I can enjoy great music for free. If ya’ll haven’t been to Threadgill’s to see the Piney Grove Ramblers, you are missing out!

After eating here a few times, I realize that the food has always been good, but the prices are just high for what they deliver. The chicken fried chicken is more delicious than the chicken fried steak in my experience because the steak can be a little tough. I’ve had good experiences with the wait staff. Their variety of side dishes is impressive. The food is worthy of four stars, but the prices bring the overall rating down to three stars. If price isnt an option, this is a good comfort food place.

A lot of history here. Pretty good meat & three. Nice and touristy at times.

So the food at this place was ok, but I give this place five stars because the bartender was so nice to me. You know when you’re traveling from out of town alone, and you just wanna eat, but not alone, this girl was awesome. She told me about the area and give me helpful hints. She was great! I enjoyed this place so much just because the staff was so wonderful. Thanks guys!

Excellent CFS. Not overbreaded, gravy had a nice kick to it and NOVEINS in the meat!!! I think I was more into the sides. The Collards also had a nice spice to the and big ol’ chunks of love(bacon). But the star was the broccoli casserole. Yes I said broccoli casserole. It not something I would normally order but I am glad I did. They will give you a second serving on the sides and I got more casserole. Didn’t really have room for it but I need to be done.

Great staff! Ambiance is cheerful and laid back. Not a sports bar(only 1TV) but Liz, our bartender, was very accommodating! Live music on one side that was not overbearing. The large building in the back is not the restaurant, don’t get confused. Head to the sign that says«Howdy Stranger». Definitely would come back!

I would give it five stars for the ease of parking and finding parking space, or even given it four stars for the sweet tea, even three stars for the presentation of the food all covered in this creamy gravy, but since our food was so bland on one side and burned on the other side . One star all I have left for taste, service, quality of food and just for going in there it was really bad, the burned food has left a taste in my mouth.

All I can say about this place is – «wow». Went there yesterday as I found out about it while researching good local places to eat while on my trip. I was the first person there as they opened on a Sunday brunch day and I told the hostess I was looking forward to chicken fried steak. She said that she would go back to the cook and assured me I would get it. The plate that was brought to the table was worth every penny. Oh, they offered me second helpings. I had to refuse after three days of great food in Austin!!!

Warning: I’m a broke college-aged Asian male who likes meat and big portions. Aka, I don’t know much about Southern food. First, the ambiance seemed fun to me. It was very music, beer, and country, as far as I could tell. Service was good. Our waiter was nice, and even though the place was somewhat busy, the manager came around and checked on everyone, too. Food tasted great to me and the people I was with. Free rolls and cornbread was good. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Dinner with Sweet Potato Fries and a Caesar Salad. Fries and salad were pretty generic. The chicken tenders were really nice and crispy; a crispy outside rather than a lot of bread-y breading, if that makes sense. Our group also ordered the King Ranch Chicken(Friday special), Chicken Fried Steak, and Pecan Crusted Chicken. General consensus was good was good, and portions were pretty huge(especially with rolls and cornbread). Price was my biggest issue with this place, along with the fact that it’s good food, just not super special or unique. The average per meal was $ 12-$ 15, which is more than most college kids can swing. My friend’s parents paid for me; if it was just me, I don’t know if I’d come back, just because it’s so expensive.

Meat and three. We had lunch here. The guys. Meatloaf got a C. The country fried steak received high praise. Veggie plate was good but squash was awful. Did not like cornbread it was dry and chewy. As far as ambiance goes they had a lot of cool music stuff up. They seemed to have had a several bad ass musicians(Joplin) here at some point. Live bands still perform regularly.

This comfortable eclectic diner was o. It’s way to 5 stars with fast and friendly service. Then I cut in to what could best be discribed as a rare pork chop. When asking the waiter to take the remnants to the manager for him to correct the best that could be mustered was an apology sent through the same waiter. I feel for the staff when the management has no sense of customer service. So if you want quick uncooked unapologetic service this is your place. Too many restaurants in tolerate this.

I’ll add to the«this isn’t bad, but it’s just not good either» reviews this place gets. It’s just only mediocre food and the prices aren’t low enough to justify that. I think the only reason people come here is that a long time ago it used to be a major place where good musicians got a start, but not anymore. Come if you want to see some music history on walls, choke down the mediocre food and check it off your list.

Meh. It’s not terrible, it’s not even bad. It’s just not good. Nothing has any flavor. Chicken fried chicken is a boneless and tasteless fried piece of pounded chicken. The mashed sweet potatoes were probably just that. Add some butter and salt and they might be tasty. Turnip greens were bland and watery. Corn bread tasteless. Chicken fried steak was pretty much the same as the chick fried chicken, blah. Service was really good! I wouldn’t go back.

This was my first time at Threadgill’s and besides having driven past it a few times I really didn’t think much of it. So I was very surprised to find out how engulfed it is in Austin’s history. Janis Joplin even used to come play here! That’s pretty dang cool. They have live music multiple times a month, daily specials, and a giant menu packed with southern comfort dishes. Chicken fried steak, meatloaf, fried chicken; any down home cookin’ you are craving chances are they make it. We were only here for dessert, as my friend told me that they make a good buttermilk pie. If you’ve never had buttermilk pie before it’s very custard like while having a nice crunchy top from a layer of sugar they add before baking. Our other friend described it as a ‘Redneck Crème Brûlée’ which I would agree is an accurate description. They serve it topped with whipped cream and clearly I hated it as it took me all of two minutes to inhale my slice. What’s even better is that a slice of pie here is under $ 5. I will definitely be back to try dinner sometime as southern food is right in my husband’s wheelhouse. Pro Tip: if you come closer to closing time like we did, you may want to bring some cash just in case. Their computers were having issues and not accepting credit cards. They fixed this before we left, but it never hurts to bring some just to be safe.

Well let’s talk about THAT experience. It wasn’t my best experience. I can think of a limited amount of bad experiences where the food was concerned. My boyfriend talked me into coming here. Some of his family was in town and we got to choose where to eat. He wanted so bad to go there that I trusted him with his choice even though I looked at the reviews and wasn’t fully wanting to go. He wanted chicken fried steak, he knew it before we got there. I said ok, because he was excited. ATMOSPHERE– It felt good to sit there. The lighting was just right and the decorations where enough to entertain me throughout dinner. SERVICE– I experienced something different from what other people are saying. I got good service. My drink was refilled when I wanted it refilled The timing was great. Side salads were out first and in a timely manner. Not too long after the salads were finished, the main meal was brought out FOOD– My boyfriend had the chicken fried steak, his favorite food, and he said it was good. I ordered the meatloaf and I was disappointed. FLAVORLESSMUSH. I tried salting it and putting hot sauce on it and nothing could help because the sauce on top of the meatloaf was pretty bad. The sauce wasn’t ketchup like, I was expecting something familiar, it was more like a chunky tomato soup with the soupy part drianed out and with celery and bell peppers. Here is a better sauce: equal parts ketchup and brown sugar with a bit of either Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce. My boyfriend is allergic to fish, we use soy sauce. Their ceasar salad was the best thing I had. FOODPOISONING– This is the reason for the single star. I wasn’t feeling too well during the meal and I had a hard time sleeping with a raging stomach ache. It took quite a while to fall asleep. My boyfriend texted me later and told me that he had been puking for an hour. Twelve hours later I was still aching and I didn’t want to eat… I have my first day of the semester today and I’m taking CALIII, I need to be fueled and ready for that stuff!!! PRICE– You pay to be poisoned, but I assure you that it is top notch poison. My boyfriend’s uncle paid for our meal, but he paid too much. At least $ 10 per meal.
