My NM native husband and I did a double-take when we saw the words«Navajo Tacos» on a sign at a food truck outside the convention center. It was definitely a surprising taste from home. Navajo tacos are soft tacos made using Navajo, alternately called fry, bread. It’s a puffy, soft flour-based round bread. The tacos are usually served flat which makes the name kind of wrong but that’s what they’re called. Traditionally they’re usually the flat bread covered with beef, smothered with red chile(sauce made from red chile peppers *not* the meat-based chili) sauce, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. These«tacos» are served in school cafeterias all over New Mexico and, most notably, at the«Indian Village»(that’s what they call it I swear) at the New Mexico State Fair. These were served in the cafeteria of the office building in Albuquerque where I worked. The cafeteria guy would ask me how much chile I wanted on top, and I always said, «a little.» Every time,” a little,” got bigger until I was addicted to the stuff. I’m fairly sure my husband was bribing the cafeteria guy. So, yes, it was exciting to find anything even remotely like a Navajo taco here. They were expensive considering what we got — the fry bread was about ½ the size of what we’re familiar with and they were folded, which was weird but made sense since it’s street food. We had the pork with green chile, which isn’t traditionally served with the fry bread but I loove pulled pork and green chile. It was good. Not super great. But a nice surprise.

Sooooo dope! Yes, they are $ 6 – 7, but god are they worth it. I went back here 3 times during SXSW trade show and couldn’t bear to try anything other than the puerco. The green chile was delicious, all the toppings were perfect, and the pork was to die for! Staff was already great. Can’t wait for SXSW next year to get my fill.

Ughhhh was scammed by these people! $ 7 for a taco is WAY overpriced. Also, not at all surprised(via the previous review) that they are just a food truck run by the convention center and not like a real Austin food truck. So yeah got a veggie taco and it was $ 7 and it was just OK. I think I convinced myself it was better than it actually was because it was my first meal in Austin. Honestly, like, the taco was fine and maybe it would have even been good for $ 2, but no way for $ 7. SO yeah, don’t go here. Walk 2 blocks up the road and get the WAY better tacos.

There is no web page on these guys and after a search, I found they are a concept of ARAMARK(Austin Convention Center — ACC). This is a food truck outside of ACC on the ACC sidewalk near Second and Trinity. They made tacos in a sort of flat gordita-like fried shell that was soft. I wanted the Pulled pork with green chili — but in true food truck fashion they were out. After all, they were catering to a subset of some 20,000SXSW Interactive attendees who were hungry. They told me they could do the pulled chicken with green chili(it was normally with Red Chili). I acquiesced and $ 7 later(that seems to be the magic price tag at ACC for a lunch item), I had my taco. While it looked healthy, all that chicken and lettuce, I knew that Taco Shell would do me in. And it did. I enjoyed every delicious fattening bite. So, While at the ACC for SXSW or any other event, Tia Kelly’s will curb your hunger. Are you getting a TRUE Austin Food Truck experience… No, just a big business, mass production imitation with the calories of a chain restaurant menu. ACC — Bring in some REAL food trucks.
