Tried to stop in for a maid rite. We were excited because we haven’t had one in years. At 11am there was a handwritten sign on the counter«on break be back in 15 minutes.» I got tired of waiting and tried another lunch option in the same location.

Got the big hot daddy sandwich and wow! It was disgusting! Now I wasn’t expecting much from a truck stop, but I wouldn’t feed that sandwich to my dog. It was made with some sort of chopped gray mystery meat that had a very fake smoke flavor, topped with jalapeños and cheese on a soggy greasy bun. AND it was 6 bucks! Never again.

I think Maid-Rite restaurants was one of the original franchises. The meat sandwich is made from hamburger that has been cooked and crumbled. How it is flavored after that is the«secret». There are different recipes on the internet that purport to be the secret recipe. Having said that though, if you are traveling through Iowa I think you owe it to yourself to at least try one. This particular restaurant was located in a food court like atomosphere at a truck stop off of I-80. The restaurant was clean, and the workers were pleasant.
