I have been to Beverly’s many times throughout the years and for some reason they’re always moving stuff around and I have to be on the hunt for what I need because it’s moved, unless its fabric or silk plants. This trip I stopped in for some acrylic paint and a fine tip paint brush. Their painting section has dwindled down quite a bit. Very small selection of brushes and the paints were adequate. My problem is the aisles are so small and trying to find what color of paint you want and someone else doing the same you may as well just wait your turn. No room for two of you. They always have nice fabric and cute home décor, with nice display set as you walk in. I know they do still offer all kinds of classes here but I’ve never tried one. Hmm maybe I’ll look into one?

Admittedly, fabric & crafts are not my thing. Still, from time to time over the years, I have dropped by for whatever reason. Seems like this store has everything. Aisles are filled with merchandise and are organized nicely. Store is clean, and staff is okay. If I was creative or into crafty stuff, I would probably be a fan of Beverly’s. As it is, the store is A-Ok in my book.

I go here to get lace locks for my running shoes. They are only $ 3 here and twice that price at a sporting goods store. Plus the store is near by and never crowded.

I’ve been there a total of 3 times to buy stuff for my daughter’s birthday party. 2 out of the 3 times, I received really bad customer service. The first time, a cashier in a pink apron, was literally throwing my flowers into the bag. I decided to put some back because I thought I was buying too much and asked her to take a few out and she grabbed a handful and tossed them on the counter and proceeded to take the amount I requested out. After I paid, I asked her if she would like me to take the flowers I didn’t buy, back to where I found them. She looked a me for a few seconds and with attitude replied«NO». She made me feel really uncomfortably and almost as if she thought I was going to steal them. My last visit(which was today) the cashier with a pink apron was being rude. I’m not sure if it was the same lady, she didn’t seem familiar, so I don’t think it was. I purchased 6 mason jars. When I went to the register, I only placed one on the counter and told her I had 5 more in the cart. When she was ringing me up, I asked if she had a box, I can put them in. She completely ignored me and finished the transaction, without saying a word. Once she handed me my change she went to go check. She opened a door to a room next to the register and closed it right away. She came back and said«she didn’t have a box for me». I found that odd since she had the door open for a split second. She asked if I wanted a bag and I told her yes. She put one on the counter and told the lady behind me she can help her. She really thought I was going to bag them myself! I was already frustrated my this point, but decided to bite my tongue. I placed the remaining 5 mason jars on the counter and let her bag them. Instead of wrapping them individually in paper(like they even do at DOLLARTREE) She grabbed a big piece of paper and put it in the bag and began placing the mason jars in there. Mind you the whole time she was bagging them, she kept sighing real loud. I’m not sure why she was so mad. I noticed she was being rude to the lady that paid before me too. Needless to say, that will be my last time going there. I shouldn’t go to a store and feel awkward and get treated poorly for no reason.

I’m upping my review based on one thing. DECOMESH! They have some of the best selections in town! I had previously been ordering online for a small fortune. I happen to work pretty close so I can pop in regularly and they always have new and updated stock. Prices are much better than online. If you don’t know about deco mesh… well, then ignore everything you just read. But I bet you’ll Google deco mesh just to find out.

Beverly’s Fabric and Crafts is Bakersfield’s headquarters for all things crafty. The carry greeting cards, silk flowers, a huge selection of fabrics and yarn, scrapbooking supplies, there’s even an entire aisle full of stamping and embossing supplies. There are even several aisles filled with items designed to appeal to kids. Many of them brought back memories of my own childhood(which was QUITE a while ago.) oven bake clay, paint by numbers, puzzles. I was amazed to see loopers, which look like stretchy fabric rubber bands. You use a loom to weave them into potholders, which I promise you seemed a WHOLE lot cooler when I was a kid than they do now. There was a whole section full of origami paper in various sizes and colors. Most were square, but some came in specialized shapes or colors to make shapes like insects or dinosaurs. I picked up chenille stems(we called them pipe cleaners when I was young) for a school project and yarn, pony beads, and feathers for our school’s Native American Day centers. For those who are a little older, and a little wilder, they carry colorful feather boas and Mardi Gras beads(no need to flash anything but your credit card).

I am through with this store! They are not helpful at all, and are down right rude! I went in recently for some help with a project(actually purchase the material’s at the Beverly’s in SLO) the ‘little’ girl in the fabric department couldn’t be bothered with even trying to decipher the ‘Beverly’s’ directions I was given, nor try to help me! She actually left for lunch while I was still standing there! I had picked up some things to purchase on my way to the fabric department, but put them back on my way out as I was way too frustrated to be bothered buying anything from them! Unfortunately we don’t have another craft type store on this side of town anymore, so they have an advantage… but I will just plan better and drive to Rosedale, Valencia, SLO or Fresno! Walmart will have to do in a pinch! There interior decorating products are way overpriced also! Count me DONE!

After moving to Bakersfield and finding Beverly’s Ill rarely go anywhere else. It’s pretty much a one-stop-shop. Pros: They have just about anything your looking for, and things you didnt know you were looking for. They are clean and pretty well organized. Cons: Their fabrics can be a little pricey, and I have been told a couple of times by the cashiers to ask someone else about something I might be looking for. They arent very knowledgeable about the store sometimes.

After being contacted by the owner, I went back to Beverly’s for a second visit. Must say, I was impressed. The blue line at checkout has indeed been redone so it’s more visible. Yay for that! :) Spent a lot more time in the yarn aisles and came out with much more than I know what do do with. Organic cotton yarn and some wool blends. The needle section was impressive, especially in that they have several different sized of stitch markers in packages for about $ 5 each, plus size 50 straight needles.(If you aren’t a knitter, just know that size 50 is gigantic.) Wow! Back by the fabric section up against the wall are a ton of knitting books which I missed on my last trip. Happy, happy. Picked up a reusable shopping bag for 99¢. I will be going back again and again now for sure.

I don’t live in town anymore but sometimes I have to drive back to Beverly’s because they have some of the most unique items that I can’t get anywhere else. The staff is really friendly and they have fun classes available for all ages. Great stuff for the holidays too!

So guess where I ended up on Saturday afternoon in Bakersfield? Yeah, that’s right… I finished at the convention a bit early, started driving around to see what I could find, and I found Beverly’s. Nice place — what I found incredible was that the yarn section had three times as much yarn as the stores in my area(you know who you are, Jo-Ann and Michael’s!). When I called my husband to tell him(because that’s what he wanted to know first — what kind of yarn did I find in Bakersfield?), he said that that was because there isn’t that much to do in Bakersfield, which I disagree with(do not rise up, Bakersfieldians; my husband has only been there once with me, for a few hours, so he just doesn’t know!). I found some great sale yarn, a free afghan pattern, and also bought the largest needles in the store(size 50 — hey, like Freud said, sometimes a knitting needle is just a needle, but I paraphrase…). I met a fellow yarn addict who turned me on to a couple of websites, after I complained about the lack of readily available yarn in my area. Loved the store, wish it was closer to my house — nice to know there are other options available.
