Fried chicken was excellent. Mac & Cheese noodles were large and meaty, black eyed peas are soupy. Good. Expect to wait.

My wife was on jury duty downtown(they recently moved to H and 13th St) so we decided to meet here for her lunch break. I had pretty low expectations before coming here mainly because I’m such a die-hard J’s Place fan. When we arrived right at noon my expectations dropped even lower when we noticed we were the only customers in the entire restaurant. This concerned us since nearly every restaurant downtown at lunchtime is packed. I ordered the fried chicken with a side of greens. My wife ordered the fried snapper with a side of green beans. To my surprise the fried chicken was awesome! Very tender and had great flavor. My wife also enjoyed her snapper. Neither of us were very impressed with the sides. Each plate also came with a huge slice of cornbread and it was one of the best I’ve ever had. Also for the price, the portions were huge. I had a fried chicken thigh, breast, cornbread and a side for $ 6. The snapper and it’s accompaniments were also just $ 6. Unfortunately for this place, J’s still is a step above. But this is still a great spot to get a very good and cheap lunch downtown.

They just moved from Stine to 1230-A H Street in downtown. Right next to Grinders and where Mom & Dems used to be. BBQ Beef Sandwich is very good and so is the French Dip. They serve it with thin French fries or a choice of certain sides. Next try will be the Philly, which has chilli. The people there are very friendly. I’m glad that a BBQ joint opened up in downtown. Good stuff. The meat has a smokey flavor to it. I think they grill with wood.
