Shakey’s Pizza Parlor

So this is a bit of a eulogy. I grew up in Baldwin Park, and my family would always come to this Shakey’s. It was the closest thing to a Chuck-​e-​Cheese in area (without the freaky rat walking around), and its outdated games/​greasy (yet decent pizza). The mojos and fried chicken did the job. I’m sad to see it go, but in this age of Unilocal reviews, fresh/​quality food, and more competition, it makes sense.
RIP childhood Shakey’s. You’ll always have a special place in my heart (and arteries).

Been working around the area for a few years. I’ve always loved Shakey’s and wanted to try out this location. I was immediately greeted by Rodger the manager. Very friendly man who asked me about my drink before I had even pulled out my wallet to pay! That’s service I like! On my lunch there Rodger asked me twice about refills and whether I was doing well or not. I like that he’s very attentive to all the people in the dining area.
First all, it’s one of those vintage old school Shakey’s with the stained glass windows – not the newer family style locations. For those old enough to remember, Shakey’s was a dark drinkin’ and eatin’ place with a jukebox and t.v. This place is smaller than a normal location, plenty of tables and chairs inside. The childrens «play» area does not seem very fun or appealing — it seems like a cheaper more run down imitation of the games you would find at a newer location.
I didn’t come here with my child, I came for the food on my lunch break. The food was hot, the tables were clean. Silverware was clean and presentable. The salads and dressings were cold and there were no visible messes. I had chicken, mojos, and different slices of pizza. All served hot, tasting like they should – delicious. I don’t know about people saying this and that about cold food, bad service or whatever. I was in the dining area with a handful of people on their lunch – they all seemed pretty happy with their food and experience. I didn’t come here to re-​visit my high school days or how awesome things were when the walls were not so runned down. I came here to eat and enjoy my lunch in a clean quiet place. Definitely not the worst Shakey’s I’ve been too. I’ll gladly return for the buffet any time.

Best pizza/​lunch place in town! The food is great and plenty. Staff is the friendliest I’ve seen in any restaurant in a long time! Don’t base your evaluation on the bad reviews. Come see for yourself!

If you come here for brunch, it’s good! The manager checks up on you often!
If you’re ordering a full pizza with mojos, I would advise that you buy the pizza somewhere else and order the mojos separately. The pizza here is okay and not worth the price.

Horrendous. This place has seen better days, I hope. Food was okay. Greasy pizza. Really small and run down play area for kids. Service was okay at least.

Let me start by saying I will never step foot in this place again!!! The manager roger was attending customers with his shades on and shifting between watching college basketball on T. V and then the register.
I showed up about 11:30am for the buffet and I notice the there was two pizzas already made one was a pan pizza and the other a thin crust [pepperoni] and both were cold. The mojos were soft and the mash potatoes were also cold when I asked the manager if there was any fresh pizzas in the back he asked why and I replied that it was cold, so he tossed them in the trash and asked the employees in the back to make some fresh pizzas so I had to wait another 10 minutes for fresh pizza.
Soda was flat and the place smelled funny, I guess the manager doesn’t care about this specific shakeys. But I’m taking my business elsewhere.
Patrons beware… So gross

I’m not the type of person that would bash on a restaurant. In fact I rarely post any reviews but this place has really gone downhill.
Their Coke had absolutely not taste. It had the taste of a left out day old soda.
Secondly, it appears the staff wiped the tables with a dirty cloth. It left our table with a fowl smell.
I’m not sure what took our food so long to get. There was only one couple ahead of us and it wasn’t busy at all.
I don’t see myself coming to this Shakeys again

If I could I would put no stars! Horrible service. The manager yells at employees and instead of making your order when you call, they wait till you get there to start making it. The manager started yelling at employee in why she told me 10 mins when it’s 15 – 20 for a small 1 topping pizza! This is not the first time they have done it. All the manager said do you want it or not instead of apologizing for the longer wait. Go to another Shakeys not Baldwin park! Dad thing I live down the street but I will commute to have a better experience.

As a former employee, re-​visiting Shakey’s is always a pleasure except Baldwin Park. Went there with a discount coupon which was presented to manager Roger who totaled the transaction on the register and asked for an excessive payment. When questioned if the discount was applied, he admitted that it was not and then claimed without explanation that he would not accept the coupon despite the facts that Shakeys Baldwin Park was clearly printed on the coupon along with an unexpired date. Why mail coupons to local residents if Shakeys BP will not honor them? Roger is dishonest by attempting to overcharge and is unethical by not applying a valid discount. Buyer beware!

meh. paper plates? really? the chicken was salty and just not good! I wont be returning. go to the one in el monte just past the freeway on valley. that ones the best one!

Horrible food chicken and pizza undercooked. Half if the games don’t work. I should of asked for my money back!

Been to many Shakey’s in the SoCal area since my kids like going there. I myself am not a big fan of Shakey’s but enjoy it when I do go. For the most part, all the ones I’ve been too are fine. never less than average at worst. But this one was an «OMG!» 2 – 3 pizzas at a time for the bunch-​a-​lunch and always the same ones, Hawaiian, pepperoni and one that had Jalapenos. Pizza ran out quickly too.
The MOJO’s did not seem like mojo’s. Thickly sliced, very soft and the seasoning did not taste like the usual Mojo’s. It was like they just took their own potato and sliced it themselves and cooked it
The fried chicken tasted like it was leftover from yesterday and again not the usual Shakey’s taste, appearance or size. All the pieces were very small and the skin was all shriveled up.
Games did not work. Lost coins in it. So my kids were disappointed.
I get the feeling that the owner is not following or using what Shakey’s is requiring owners to follow in terms of food. We couldn’t eat any more than 2 slices of pizza and my older son who usually loves the Mojo’s couldn’t eat anymore than 5 before he stopped and said «these don’t taste like mojo’s.»
It is an older shakey’s and in need of an update. The doors to the rest room looked at least in appearance like it had food stains on it, although the inside of the restroom was clean.
Anyway, don’t think we will be returning to this Shakey’s.

Where should I start? Manager is completely unorganized and doesn’t even know what is going on in his kitchen. The cook doesn’t even bring out the food when it is hot and ready (leaves BOTH chicken and mojos in the back until they are soggy. ONLY ONE pizza out during their buffet hours. And to top it off, when I ask the manager if he can get more chicken in the back because there is none left, he replies «I don’t know, I’m not in the kitchen.» Horrible service and horrible food. Simple as that. Go to the El Monte location instead (100 000 times better).

I liked it. The pizza was good but the mojos are the best.

Pizza needs more flavor and the employees are nice.

If you would like to have horrible food poisoning on a pleasant Sunday night, then you came to the right place. Im usually not a picky eater and have a pretty decent strong stomach but I could not believe the pain I had to go through because of Shakeys chicken and pizza. The chicken was undercooked, burnt, something you would find sweeping the floor underneath the oven. That should have stopped me from eating it, but I put too much trust on Shakeys. And I was disappointed. Ive also ate better tasting cardboard as a child compared to their «pizza». Long story short, I would never come to this place ever and I hope this review can stop someone from experiencing horrible food poisoning as I did. These people should be prosecuted.

Although the food was moderately good, the staff is sadly uneducated. After my friends daughter accidentally stepping into a mouse trap they did not acknowledge our concerns nor did they act as if anything was wrong. If they replace management i would rate a better experience.

Wanted Mojos & Pizza today —
Walked in, and was greeted by the older Asian guy. Very nice guy. So I placed my order for a large combo (Pizza + Chicken tenders + mojos) whoa it came out to $ 33??? Are you kidding me? I could get 6 Little Caesars pizzas for that price. I can get 3 pizzas from Papa Johns/​Dominos/​Pizza Hut for that & get it delivered.
Waited 15 mins for the food, the girl showed me everything before putting it in a bag for me. Got home, touched the pizza and it was room temp. My drive home was 5 minutes at that… are you kidding me? The mojos were thinly sliced and so when they’re fried they become like potato chips. Was really disappointed with this visit.

This review is totally based on my last visit to this particular location. My last visit prior to this one was approximately 6 months to maybe even a year. I love Shakey’s more for it being Shakey’s and it being a part of my childhood memories, i.e. fundraisers, high school ditch days and over eating during the all you can eat lunch buffet than for the quality of their food. I like it, it’s not the greatest, but I have had far worse than Shakey’s.
So on my last visit, I was slighthly disappointed, and here are the reasons why:
1. Salad bar was dirty, there was nothing in it, and only one trip up there. WTF? Why was it dirty and why wasn’t it stocked? It wasn’t even busy.
2. Flat beer– As a Tecate lover, it’s hard to find it on tap anywhere. Here, they have it on tap, but sadly, it was flat. The glasses were not chilled enough, and the pitcher they served the beer in was in the smaller plastic soda type, so unlike the other two Shakey’s I visited recently.
To be perfectly honest, we had to wait a really long time for our food to come out, and we had to wait for them to wash forks cause there weren’t any out there. The shift leader, while very helpful, was not 21, so I had to wait to get my beer replaced, which they so graciously did, and for that, my visit was saved. Plus, they either made a mistake, or they comped me another pitcher.
Another plus was Jill or Jan (???), who is the marketing manager, and who, if it was not for her, this Shakey’s would have only gotten one or two stars. She totally saved the visit. Because of her, I am willing to give this place another shot. She was cool, she was friendly, and informed me they show games there and could reserve us a table if we wanted one for our softball team on these nights.
I hope they improve here in El Monte, because being an El Monte boy born raised, this is where I had spent many a high school day.
