I happened to be in the area a couple weekends ago for work and was excited to see Merb’s! It’s been on my to-do list for quite a while and would be the perfect place to visit on my lunch break. The lady at the counter was very friendly and attentive and was able to answer all of my questions. After a lot debating, I decided to take the a salted caramel, a turtle, a molasses puff and pecan bark. The bark was the best example of their chocolate — it had a rich and complex flavor and it was probably my favorite piece. The the salted caramel was probably my second favorite because I’m just a huge fan of that combination. The only one I wasn’t completely crazy about was the puff. The texture was inconsistent and I wasn’t sure if that was on purpose… some parts were really hard and others were chewy and soft. Next I visit, I hope to try their marshmallows!

The other reviews I see here are for chocolate covered strawberries, so I can’t vouch for those because that’s not what I had. And although the menu and selection are probably important, I had to review the chocolates we actually tried and they were terrible. Probably the worst we’ve ever had. My husband bought me a large box of chocolate cremes for Valentine’s Day and we were both supremely disappointed. The chocolate layer was thinner than most, the crème fillings tasted terrible and were grainy — the orange tastes just like orange chewable vitamins and the other flavors were barely discernible and were all too sweet; the candy was probably worse than the cheap walgreen’s boxes, which would have been fine except they cost more. ;-) I can’t vouch for the apples, strawberries or service because I didn’t try them and I didn’t purchase the chocolates, but we’ve tried all the biggest chocolate companies in St. Louis and this one was a real let down. Maybe reinventing the crème fillings would help, but if that’s that you’re looking for, look elsewhere.

Since 1997 it’s all my wife has asked for, for Valentine’s Day. Everything they make is fantastic, but there is no substitute for Merb’s chocolate covered strawberries. I recommend getting them earlier in the day. 3 days in a row, the year before last they were sold out before 3:00 pm.

What a delightful store. My first visit. The clerk was so personable, and gave me some history of Merbs Candies, which originated in downtown St. Louis(or south St. Louis) and has been around for a long time, and I learned that Merbs makes its own chocolate and caramel. It dawned on me after my trip that Merbs makes those bionic apples that are so popular in autumn. There is a lot of stuff in this store, including sugar-free candy, peanut brittle, heavenly hash, peanut clusters, rock candy, chocolate-dipped almonds(and other chocolate-dipped nuts), chocolate strawberries, fudge topped with pecans, caramel topped with pecans, various hard candies, caramel pecan apricots, chocolate-covered pretzels, molasses puffs, roasted cashews and so much more. There are also boxed chocolates, like creams, just nuts, just caramels, nuts and caramels, everything mixed, and they all come in a variety of sizes. I got a sampling of four chocolates: 2 snappers(like Turtles) — both dark chocolate, 2 pecan clusters — one milk chocolate, one dark chocolate, 2 molasses chips — both dark chocolate and two caramels — one milk chocolate, one dark chocolate. Such a bountiful assortment for $ 5.67. What divine candy. I’m savoring every bite.
