Clear Internet Baltimore

Definitely irritated by the latest news that Clear will be ceasing operations as of November 6^th. In some ways, I’m actually glad for it, because the service has been irritatingly slow (especially within the last month), and the technical help is less than stellar. However, what’s even worse is the fact that with the exit of Clear as an Internet provider, Baltimore City residents now only have … Verizon and Comcast to choose from. That’s it. Two monopolies. Whoop-​dee-​do, I’m so excited. Not.
I seriously wish that Google had picked Baltimore as a startup city for their fiber optic network, but eh. It is what it is.
I, too, have been with Clear from the very beginning (since the «xohm​.com» days) and up until now, I’ve been satisfied with it only because I didn’t have to put up with Verizon or Comcast’s crap. No more, I guess. Bummer.
If we in Baltimore City want fiber optic capabilities (and we should, damn it — this is SUPPOSED to be a major metropolitan area), I would encourage everyone to visit the Baltimore Broadband Coalition — it’s a grassroots effort to get fiber optic lines into this city, and it’s well worth your while. Buhbyes, Clear. You served me well, but I can’t say I’m happy with the decision to cease service.

I actually rather liked Clear, up until Sprint, which owned it the whole time (sorry, David H), took on a more prominent role in its operation.
I was one of their first customers, back when they still had the unwieldy name of Xohm. How early an adopter was I? My email address was
. How often do you just get your own first name as your email address? This is when it was still pretty much a pilot program operating in Baltimore and Portland, Oregon.
Unfortunately, however, Sprint stopped supporting the equipment, and as of today they’ve announced that the network itself is going to cease operation in early November 2015.
RIP, Xohm/​Clear. Yours was an idea too good to last.

Clear internet service is the worst service ever. I don’t know who is worse comcast or clear. The customer service is awful. They know nothing about their service and it is hard to understand them. I could never ever stream anything without buffering issues. If we had more than one device working, forget it! It was the most frustrating thing that I have ever experienced and they had the nerve to contact me to tell me that my service fee would be increasing. I don’t think so!!! Goodbye forever!!!

SO FAR SO GOOD. There are enough negative reviews posted that show Clear has some work to do. I’ve had no problems, though. Here are a few thoughts —
1. Check your address on the coverage map on their website. I have a tower 2 blocks away and am doing fine. A friend who lives two blocks in the OPPOSITE direction of the tower gets no service. The map does clearly show that she lacks coverage, though.
2. I use the Chrome browser which is supposed to be a little faster for streaming videos, and have no issues. I use my Mac laptop and Nook in all rooms of the house, and can stream Netflix and Hulu fine.
3. I have not had to deal with customer service, which seems like a frustrating experience, to say the least. I got my hub at Best Buy, and they activated the contract. So far I’ve used the Clear website to monitor my usage/​account, and have not had to deal with any hateful customer service.
Overall — it sounds like this is not yet at a point where it works for a lot of people. I’d say your location and surroundings make it a bit of a crap shoot. My experience has been great with a good price compared to Comcast or Verizon.

AWEFUL customer service. I was on the phone for over 1 hour trying to access my account and the person could not pull it up. IT took over 30 minute for me to speak to the supervisor. Simply, the department is incompetent and has not been trained on how to handle an unsatisfied customer. I am changing thank god. Can not stand them. Wish I could give them 0 stars.

Clear Wireless is the worst of the worst. Technically the concept is great but they are just awful people. They sell contracts and hardware. After that they couldn’t care less. Seriously. Their customer service makes Verizon or Comcast seem like a nice day in the park. Speeds are slow but ok in the day time but drop to near nothing at night. At night it is half the speed of dial up. Technical support is not able to do anything. They follow scripts that usually have nothing to do with your issue. After an hour or two of useless nonsense they’ll promise someone will call back. Nobody will call back. When you call back again they start the script over again. You will never talk to anyone in the US again once you sign on that dotted line. Nobody will ever be helpful again after you sign on that dotted line. You may or may not get the services you pay for. Probably not.

Clear– I’m sorry for the bad reviews from other subscribers
Everyone– Clear wireless has been my saving grace (Clear… don’t make me a liar). I went through the Sprint mobile broadband experience and was hosed by Sprint (Sprint… I’m saving my fire for your review… here’s a spoiler… YOU SUCK). Clear has been professional, has lived up to my expectations, no contract, is very affordable, and is fast. Check the coverage areas before you sign up, so you know what to expect. The modem is ugly (but who cares), and I have to put it in the window to get a 3-​light signal at night. When on 2 lights it is still fine for streaming Netflix or Hulu Plus.
I think for the price, the no-​contract, and by checking your coverage maps… you can make the right decision. Clear has been good to me so far, and I hope you have the same experience.

I’ve had Clear for a year now and have experienced no major problems. I have the home internet and I have a laptop with a Wimax modem built in. The price is very fair for home + mobile… I think I pay about $ 60 per month.
There was an outage on one day in the past year that lasted for about 5 hours but other than that the service has been reliable. My only complaint is that the speeds can vary greatly. I’ve seen anything from 75 kbps to 1.3 Mbps. It averages around 500 kbps on my mobile and 400 kbps at home which results in some slow loading for HD items on Netflix streaming if the weather outside is bad.
Overall I’ll take it, as signing up also got me $ 200 off of the price of my laptop.

When we first got clear (Aug 2010) it was great. It was fast, it never went out, and we were all around satisfied. Well when we moved to Catonsville, we called to make sure our Clear would still work there, and we were assured that it would be fine. Well it was fine for like 2 months. THEN all of a sudden (without moving the router in our home) we went from full dots of service to 2 at best. When we called, customer service said we’d need to purchase something to boost the antenna. What? No, it was fine 3 days earlier, but now we have to purchase a booster? Now whenever it rains, we don’t have service at all, and even at it’s finest moments, the connection isn’t strong enough to stream netflix without 30 interruptions. We’re so dissatisfied that we’ve been forced to go to our only other option (our arch nemesis) Comcast.

Their speeds are unreliable. Some times I’m able to reach decent download speeds but even watching Netflix movies with poor video quality without buffering is too much for Clear. I only chose Clear since my current apartment doesn’t get Comcast and am on a month to month contract. Needless to say as soon as I either move or my building gets access to Comcast internet my Clear modem is going straight to the trash.

BEWARE: CLEAR reps are deceiving and not at all knowledgeable about the service… or they are liars.
OK Clear DOES NOT offer affordable wireless service… for $ 55 (includes $ 45 4G + $ 10 leasing fees, taxes) They give you a modem but your computers have to be within 4 ft the modem it or INTERNET WILL NOT WORK… Call them, they will tell you this themselves… Basically, there are no wires, but you are still restrained,. Don’t call yourself a wireless company when you’re a hot spot (literally, your coverage is just in a spot) company. Duhh, I can buy a damn wire longer than 4 ft and have more mobility!
Why would anyone pay for that when a with a couple dollars more you can get Verizon FIOS and not be forced to huddle in a corner with a damn modem?! Get the hell out of here CLEAR!!!
