Nah. Honestly, i think they could smell my 33 year old skin or something because they weren’t even acknowledging my presence. I couldn’t get a drink until I rudely waved the bartender down despite no one being here. They were opting to serve people counting change and ordering tequila red bulls rather than taking my shiny credit card. Website said a dj would be spinning vinyl… Nope. Apparently the website is a suggestion. Instead There was a band playing oddly synthesized music. The only saving grace was that they had kronenborg 1664 on draft(lines are fucked) and that puts me in my(sorta) happy place.

My go to B-more bar. There is always something cool going on here including game nights, movie nights, music and more. They always have a great selection of beer and liquor and great service. The pin ball games are a really fun addition to the bar!

Four Hours of Funk. I was 22 years old, sober, with no good dance moves and I still had the time of my life. The music with the matched up visuals gave me a psychedelic sensory experience. It’s a different side of Baltimore and I highly recommend checking it out!

Don’t go here for Four Hours of Funk unless you want to wait outside with a bunch of MICA students who are under 21 and forgot their ids(note to college students, if you don’t carry your ID on you everywhere, just go home). After you wait outside in sub zero temps and pay your Cover, don’t expect to close out your tab without some harassment from the bartender, who will not so politely inform you, «Sure, it’s not like I don’t have 3 tabs to close out before yours!». I’m sorry, I don’t like to run a tab at an insanely overcrowded venue. Over it, my friends and I went to Ottobar which was much better with no cover. I’ll come back when there’s no dance party and the bartender isn’t pissed at me for existing.

Check out Mondo Movies, it’s a really cool event held the first Thursday of every month. Imagine MST3K mixed with a drinking game. For fans of cult classic films it’s a must.

Love the Four Hours of Funk! It’s a fantastic dance party, especially as a great alternative to dancing in Fed Hill or Power Plant with Top 40 music. I’ve also been here for the First Thursdays D-List, campy, low budget horror movie showing, which is very quirky and fun as everyone gets into how hopeful the movies are and yells in unison at the screen.

Always a good time. I’ve been here for several shows and have seen everything from funk to bluegrass. Plenty of room for dancing, a large bar for imbibing with friends and plenty of on street parking near by. It an get a little crazy at the bar during 4 hours of funk, but it’s definitely worth it. My favorite place in Baltimore for a good dance party.

Like a home away from home! Great mix of music and artists, as well as incredible drink specials, friendly staff, and accessibility. I’ve had the pleasure of discovering tons of amazing new acts as well as hearing some Baltimore mainstays. I love attending locally produced activities like Expert of Nothing — a comedy game show on the last Sunday of every month, Mondo Baltimore — a free movie night where you’ll be exposed to an amazing array of movies with lots of Baltimore’s local film makers, and Dr. Sketchy — a live drawing event with burlesque dancers as the models and performers. Basically this place is the hub of Baltimore’s cultural Rennaisance.

The windup space is a good place to catch some live music. The stage is pretty small, but you’d be surprised that 10 musicians can actually fit up there… maybe more! Good drinks, and like another reviewer mentioned, this place is clean. It does not smell like stale beer with a faint aroma of beer and pee like other similarly sized low-scale music venues in the area. They don’t serve food, but the bartender didn’t seem to mind people bringing in their own. When I was there, most people were sitting at the tables and chairs and at the bar and not dancing, but I guess that all depends on the band– there was certainly room to do so. I like that they had Allagash on draft ;)

Finally, a bar/band venue in Baltimore that doesn’t smell like old cigarette buds and is actually clean! Clean like I’m not afraid to use the toilet or sit at a table and drink something. Clean as in the floor isn’t covered in sticky beer residue. Clean as in I can actually see color on the walls and my shirt doesn’t get stained when I lean on the bar counter. Overall, a refreshing spot. Granted, the sound itself isn’t too great. It would be better if someone donated a few more speakers so that the sound wasn’t just coming from the two speaker son the stage but at least it wasn’t too loud. The drinks were cheap, the sound level wasn’t ear piercing and the crowd was just lovely. My only complaint is the parking. There is no parking. And North Ave isn’t exactly the ideal spot to park and walk. But hey, this isn’t really the venue’s fault. It’s Baltimore’s fault. Regardless, I’d be happy to see a show here.

Why is no one here for their happy hour? It’s 5 $ for a shot of Kentucky Gentlemen Whiskey and a Natty Boh(KGB as they call it). This place deserves more credit, Ping Pong nights and tons of local music? Y’all failing if your not checking it out.

I always try to schedule my visits home, to Baltimore, when ‘Four Hours of Funk’ takes place. It’s so worth it! Decently priced drinks, excellent bartenders, huge dance floor, good music, and a live crowd. ALWAYS! I’ve introduced so many people to this place for so many reasons… the music, the drinks, the space, the art, etc. A little something for everyone… and, yeah, it’s on North Avenue. GETOVERIT!

What can’t I say about this place. It’s chill, it’s LiVE, words can’t describe the experience you will end up having in this place. Also, 1 of my favorite events that takes place here…4 Hours of FUNK!!! #EPiC Where else can you go where you can have a good time for low admission and drink w/out breaking your pockets and leave out feeling as if you were at the livest event in the city. #TheWindupSpace

5 until proven guilty of a 4. Came here for a fundraiser for a non-profit I work for called Charm City Clinic. We packed the place out, the owners of the windup space were very generous in offering the space, we had two live DJs, and we got 15% of the bar profits on top of the covers we were charging. In the end, it was one of our most successful fundraisers! The sound system was great. Crisp, and not overwhelmingly loud. The bar is great, large, great selection, the bar tenders were amazing at handling the load of people we brought in. They were great. The space is classy, lots of great art on the wall, It’s very open yet you can also congregate around the various seats/tables, etc. If you need to hold an event for an organization, call these guys up. They’re great people. Love the concept, love the quirky, cool, random events they have(check their website) from board game nights, to improvised music nights, to movie screenings, to local music events. Some are even free! The space is fairly clean as well .from the outside you might think it’s very grimy, but the inside looks great.

My friends Jess and Lindsay DJ here. I remember the first time I came here, I scooted up on my vespa wearing a suit, looking completely out of place… because I don’t give a shit about being hipster. Actually it’s because I look damn good in suits and I was preening a bit, but whatever. I looked ridiculous. I was on north avenue around 11 o clock, and it had the feel of a street in a western right before shooting broke out. Sideways guns, one hand holding up sagging pants, southern mafia vs. the treys. I mean that describes most of baltimore anyways, but it was particularly solemn that night, okay? Get off my back, google maps did not prepare me for this OMG I have to text my mom Anyway, the space is really big, but generally the people there are not inclined to dance, other than in the«I’m so BORED of dancing» kind of way, at least to start. However, unlike most hipster joints in Bmore, it actually does get awesome — a lot of people tend to drift in late, there’s always something fun going on here, and really it doesn’t take itself too seriously. I came to a startling realization that this place is actually, well, hip. The crowd doesn’t really give a shit, I don’t give a shit, let’s just have some drinks and chill the hell out, maybe watch the wire, talk about John Waters telling stories about acid on dicks(this is a real thing and if you ever meet me you can ask me about it), whatever. Basically what I am saying is, I was an asian dude in a suit on a red vespa, and I did not feel out of place or disjointed. That’s how chill it is here. The only reason this is not five stars is because on some nights it can be really sketchy around here… because it’s north ave. As much kitschy charm this lends the venue… I’d really prefer to be safe… especially when I’m stumbling out drunk at 2 a.m., no? I’ve seen law and order: rape. I know what happens out there, at least in NYC.

This is the kind of place you look for in a city. Or, I look for. A character-filled bar and venue with its share of weird acts and confusing music. No pretension, no frills, just one of those little slices of bohemian heaven. The owner, Russell, is a really nice guy, too! Apparently he won some best bartender award and knows how to make a mean cocktail, though I haven’t gotten up the courage to order anything but a beer. Something about carrying around a pink martini in a place like this strikes me as awkward.

AW! Super cute urban artist hipster bar that only Baltimore can produce. Great drink specials, with a great bartender that will completely forget that you’ve asked for water 4 times… but can remember every single drink you’ve had in the past two hours without checking his computer. Heh. This place is definitely in the sketchy neighborhood of B’more…as I walked to this bar, I got propositioned twice. Once by a pimp that told me that I could bring in serious bank and he would make me his #1 b*tch. It was kinda sweet the way he said it — you had to be there. And they say that chivalry and romance is dead in this world. Once a month on Monday nights, they host Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School Baltimore here… and if you’re an artist, an artist wannabe, an artist groupie, or just in the mood for something different — this is the spot to hit up.
