Imagine, for a moment, the quintessential, greasy-spoon diner. What would it look like? If you don’t know the answer to that question, a visit to Preto’s will enlighten you. When films want to depict the traditional values of the American Midwest, they might use a diner like Preto’s as an example of how to build the set. This diner, which sits right next to a set of railroad tracks just west of the Barberton-Akron border, has a humble, well-worn appearance. Both the diner and the accompanying parking lot are small, perhaps even claustrophobic to some. But, what this diner lacks in size, it makes up for in character. A sign on the wall behind the counter reads as follows: «This is not Burger King. You don’t get it your way. You take it my way or you don’t get the damn thing.» Duly noted. The size is actually a bit deceptive; the interior layout may be cozy, but it can actually seat quite a few people, particularly along the bar-style seating area, which is lined with a number of stools. Tiny tables are tucked away on the opposite side and they make efficient use of the space. Although the building itself looks old, it also looks exceptionally clean. Patrons of this business shouldn’t expect the glitz and glamour of a pricey, high-end dining establishment, but it is apparent that Preto’s takes pride in serving its customers well. I popped in here recently for breakfast one morning: an omelette, some potatoes, and a cup of coffee. It was served promptly and the service was good. The food was also good and it was inexpensive, which is a wonderful thing. There isn’t much more I can say about this diner, except that you should check it out. It’s a hidden gem.

Nothing fancy, just good food. I loved my breakfast this morning. Eggs over medium — perfectly cooked. Rye toast — perfectly cooked. Homefries with onion — perfectly cooked. Bacon — perfectly cooked. All for under $ 5. Awesome. Add some whipped cream to the hot chocolate and I’ll be over the moon. :)

Preto’s is without a doubt a top-5 «Bang for your Buck» type of a restaurant. It’s a breakfast/lunch style diner that really gives a cost-effective meal that satisfies and the wait staff is prompt and quick. Whoever is on duty in the kitchen performs admirably. I usually get breakfast here right before I go into the office. It’s pretty well located just off of 76⁄224 exit for 619 south/Wooster Rd going into downtown Barberton, turning left onto Waterloo Rd and located just over the railroad tracks on the right. Next time you would like to get some breakfast that is delicious AND well-priced, Preto’s is your best bet. Lunch here is reputable as well!
