I’ll admit it, I only dabble in cigarettes, and after New York raised the excise tax, such a destructive habit became far too expensive. Missouri made me into a smoker. Maybe not, but it could have. After driving along the exceedingly dull I-70, a billboard claiming the lowest price cigarettes EVER got my attention. Located right off the interstate, I found a lively store full of cigarette smoke with wall to wall cartons of most major brand cigarettes. With a tax of 17 cents per pack, Missouri has the second lowest cigarette tax in the nation. And with no city or county taxes at this location, I was able to get a pack of Marlboro 27 and American Spirits for under $ 7 total. That would have cost me more than double back in the Hudson Valley of New York. With prices like that, I was tempted to purchase a carton. But then you stop dabbling in cigarettes and officially become a full time smoker.
