This is my go to for all things Cajun. Gumbo is seasoned perfectly. Jambayla is hot and always fresh. And it’s a big place so you can sit and eat. Close to home and I’ve never been disappointed

I was running weekday errands and in the mood for fried catfish before returning home. I wanted a quick option and didn’t want to dine in anywhere, so decided to give Rice and roux a shot. There are two primary reasons that they are receiving three stars — extremely slow service and poor customer experience when I finally received my food. I waited patiently behind a couple that couldn’t make up their mind for almost TEN minutes. Finally someone else came out to assist and take my order to relieve the line a bit. She was very nice and friendly. I placed my order(pot roast dinner for hubby and fried catfish for me) got my drink and proceeded to wait for 24 minutes. I do understand that made to order items take longer. However, this is absolutely unacceptable. If something is going to take more than 15 – 20 minutes for a to-go order, that should be communicated to the customer when the order is placed, especially during lunchtime. Others buzzed in and out with their orders while I just sat. At just over the 15 minute mark, someone came from the back and said they were just waiting on my catfish. No apology for the delay. Finally, my order arrived — the girl just handed it to me– no thank you, no apology for the wait, no hope you enjoy – not.one.single.word. That made me think by business was not appreciated. And to make matters worst, I specifically requested cocktail sauce and –you got it – it wasn’t in the bag when I arrived home. The food was pretty good and a decent size portion. The sweet tea was entirely too sweet, even for a sweet tea junkie like me! My only hope is that they do a better job with communicating and double check to-go orders before they leave the kitchen. They now have huge competition down the street and will need to be on point in very area.

Driving back to Houston from Florida and stopped in Baton Rouge for the night. Looking for some Cajun food and this wasn’t too far from our hotel. Ordered the jambalaya dinner with chicken and sausage. Had red beans and potato salad as my sides. Very good flavor. Wife had a combo which included boudin with her jambalaya. It was excellent as well. Couple of our kids are picky eaters and they had non-Cajun kids meals so everyone was happy. Just wish I had room for the Mississippi mud pudding for dessert as I would have to have tried it. Will come back the next time I am in Baton Rouge!

I was very impressed with this place. The jahambala & Gumbo were excellent. All for very reasonable rates. I will be back again. Before I leave

I decided to try this place because I kept seeing the coupon in the Valpak coupons that come in the mail. The actual coupon said that if you bought a jambalaya dinner and 2 drinks you got another jambalaya dinner of equal or lesser value free. Well we got so much food because we didn’t know that you also get a roll and 2 sides. Everything I ate was delicious! They packed the box full of tasty jambalaya and it had huge chunks of chicken and a lot of sausage. This is my new favorite jambalaya, it was so good! The potato salad almost looked like ice cream(see pic) which was really weird but it was creamy and really tasty. I also tasted the white beans and red beans and both were equally good. The best part was that our total was only $ 11.53! That’s cheaper than 2 value meals at McDonald’s! They also have daily specials Mon. — Fri. that come with two sides and are reasonably priced. The service was good, the dining area was clean and our food came out fast. I will definitely be coming back to try some gumbo, catfish or some of their other dinners.

I was looking forward to eating here. It’s a convenient location and the menu looked yummy. Unfortunately, it wasn’t good. First, all food is served in to-go containers. When I order takeout, I always put my food on plates. But, it wouldn’t bother me if the food was delicious. I ordered the Tuesday lunch special, lasagna and 2 sides for $ 7 something. It tasted like bad elementary school cafeteria food. The lasagna was tasteless and the texture was mushy. It was a generous size serving but not even in the same league as frozen Stouffer’s lasagna, much less from a restaurant. The corn side was lukewarm corn from a can. The salad side was plain iceberg lettuce with a few carrot shreds from a bag. The side bread was a small cold roll. My guess is that Gordon Ramsey would have a fit in their kitchen since it tastes like they are just buying and serving pre made food. My colleague got one of the Cajun combos. They messed up the order, but fixed it cheerfully. Her food was a bit better than mine. She said it was a bit bland and the jambalaya was greasy. I gave it 2 stars instead of one because the place was clean and the service was cheerful.

I won’t waste my money on the red beans or white beans again. I didn’t think they were well cooked or very spicy. Some other menu items seen ok.

They took my money then told me they didn’t have what I ordered I ordered something else then waited for 20 minutes before going up to the front to see they had forgotten me all together then had to wait for another 10 minutes. The person taking the order didn’t seem like he cared to be there or to do his job. Food was good despite every other problem.

I have enjoyed chicken & sausage jambalaya from here for several years, but for the first time ever I got a piece of the fried catfish to see how it was. Amazing! ! Now I will be going back to satisfy that craving, too! My aunt went with me and ordered the gumbo, which she also raved about. .and I know from past visits that the Mississippi Mud dessert will make you slap your momma!

Don’t let the location scare you as most of our best restaurants are in strip malls. You will find they offer great tasting authentic Cajun dishes, almost as good as my grandmother’s cooking.(Sorry but no one has beaten her cooking yet!) The gumbo, jambalaya, beans, boudin and pies are delicious and consistently cooked to perfection and the seasoning is on point. I am always impressed with the portion sizes and prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is very casual. My only negative comment I can make is this is the only location. Hoping they will make their way a tad farther south!

I was on my way to Lafayette and there was a wreck on the highway so I stumbled on Rice & Roux by accident looking for some lunch. I had a cup of chicken and sausage gumbo and some boudin balls. It was all good. Hit the spot and did not break the bank. I looked on Unilocal reading what others thought was tasty dishes to order here. I often rely on others to tip me off on what’s a signature dish in a restaurant that I want to eat at. I read one review that was just idiotic. Saying this place was not Cajun food because some hired help in the kitchen was not born and raised in Louisiana. Seriously! I guess if I go home and cook tacos it’s not considered Mexican food because I’m not from Mexico!!! SMH Like it’s too hard to throw some meat in a corn tortilla therefore it’s not authentic Mexican. Some people are just idiots. But I digress. Anyway, give this place a try because it’s pretty good eats! Geaux Tigers!!!

They claim to be Cajun but when asked if they are she said«we would like to think we are.» No true Cajun would say that! Then when asked if the cook is Cajun they said no, so how can u claim that this is authentic Cajun food?! This is an insult to true Cajuns. People think cause they live in Louisiana and can try to imitate our cooking they can call this Cajun food. The state came up with this seal(which happens to be on their menu) to protect Cajuns against people trying to imitate them and that it is Cajun, but it appears that some people like this are able to copy the seal on their menu. And by the way, the food was NOT good. I could teach them a thing or two about Cajun cooking.

We weren’t sure about trying a Cajun joint in a strip mall. But, I’m glad we did! The gumbo was awesome!

Awesome, great Cajun selections at good prices. They beat the Jambalaya Shoppe hands down. Here is an edit to my review. I have been to rice and roux about a dozen times. I have tried the jambalaya, the Pastalaya, the Catfish, and the gumbo. I have never been disappointed with the food.

This is my second visit to Rice and Roux. Both times I’ve greatly enjoyed the quant atmosphere. The food tasted freshly cooked with the right amount of flavoring. Decided to take the menu home in case my wife and I choose to preorder something different next time. I recommend the place if you want some nice Cajun food in a pleasant atmosphere.

We were a little leery about coming to a non-descript strip mall to get Cajun food. Once inside, we were immediately comfortable with the atmosphere reminiscent of hole in the wall restaurants of our youth. You know you are in the right place when they have both Louisiana Hot sauce AND Tabasco. The menu had so many yummy sounding choices we had to sit and review it for a bit so as to not miss anything. Hubby chose the shrimp étouffée special and I got the fried catfish. We didn’t want to miss out a the crawfish pies so we split an order. First of all, the food was piping hot. The portions were generous and we’ll seasoned. The catfish meal had two huge filets that were perfectly fried with a Zatarians like coating. Prices are very reasonable and you’d pay twice as much at a fancier restaurant. Have to say all was delicious but the jambalaya is perfection and I’ll definitely be back for more.

Wonderful find! Everything is good, the service is fast & friendly, and the access & parking are easy. It was on the restaurant list from the teachers of a nearby seminar I attended. I ate there all but one day.

A vendor that I do business with brought Rice & Roux’s jambalaya, white beans, and salad to a lunch ‘n learn I was hosting. I’ve lived in BR a long time, but had never heard of them. First — everything was packaged so well. The jambalaya was in a styrofoam cooler(wrapped in a plastic bag inside), and the salad and beans each had their own plastic buckets with resealable tops. We were given everything we needed to feed a crowd — utensils, etc. So let’s move onto the food… SO delicious! I am usually one of those people who groan at the thought of jambalaya and white beans, because most are tasteless and boring with very little meat. But not Rice & Roux’s! The chicken and sausage jambalaya had so much meat — unlike I’d ever seen — even to the point of having some WHOLE chicken thighs in it. The sausage was high quality and there was a lot of it. The rice itself was perfectly cooked. Even the white beans had a great flavor, and weren’t gritty or overly seasoned like so many people tend to make theirs. Just overall, a great meal. My mom’s family is true Cajun, with its own recipes for things like gumbo and jambalaya. It’s safe to say I’ve eaten quite a bit of these in my lifetime. I hadn’t ever found a restaurant that serves jambalaya that tasted like my family’s. I look forward to trying their gumbo some day and seeing how it stacks up!

What a great find! The food was superb and plentiful, and the customer service was above and beyond fantastic. A friend of mine chose Rice & Roux for our lunch date, and what great taste she has! She made some recommendations on what we could order to share, but there were too many yummy options, and I had to try to Pastalaya. I paid for both of us for lunch, and I think the bill was only $ 16 with huge portions. Mine was a cup of seafood gumbo(delish), 2 crawfish pies(yummy but I think I’ll try the boudin next time as was another option), a small side salad, a melt in your mouth yeast roll, and a plentiful portion of chicken and sausage pastalaya. If you’re a Cajun food fan and need something quick, then this is the place. The service was truly excellent as they were friendly taking orders at the cash registers but also came around to our table twice to ask how everything was(which seems to never happen at non-table served restaurants). They had a decent crowd in there too, not surprised since I know now how good the food is, how speedy the service is, and how reasonably priced they are. They also offer some great deals on take out, including catering/tailgating sized packages, so I will have to return for that as well. Oh and I didn’t save room for bread pudding this time but will definitely make an excuse to stop in and try it next time I’m in the area. ;-)
