Pep Boys

I was driving in from out of state when my car started overheating. I was fortunate to have found the Pep Boys on Northern Blvd after exiting the highway, as they were able to quickly diagnose the problem (a fault with some radiator work which had recently been done by the dealership), correct the problem, and get us back on the road again at minimal cost. Being an out-​of-​state driver and having found them by pure chance when I was in need of help, I cannot say enough about the honesty and integrity of their service department. I would highly recommend them to anyone based upon my experience.

I have used them the past two years to get my car inspected and the service has always been great and efficient. This year I made an appointment at 8am, drove in at 8, met Dillon who was professional and efficient and was done by 830. No issues whatsoever either time I have used them. Can’t comment on service as I’ve never used them for that but with the experiences I’ve had I would use them if it came down to it.

I used to go to Pep Boys because their online appointment was convenient and I figured their prices were decent as they usually run promos and all parts are located on site.
Well… first thing is that they are sllllllooooowwwwwww… even with an appointment, it took almost 2 hours just to check my brakes.
Second thing is that they are damn expensive. I happen to know the average cost of the parts involved for a brake and rotor change and their prices were nearly double that with inferior parts. BTW, their parts are always cheaper on their own website! in addition to almost always running a promo that gives an additional 20% or larger discount coupon on top.
The only saving grace for this place is that they haven’t tried to rip me off on the usual «you need a new air filter» spiel.

Brought my car there two nights ago around 6:30 in the evening for an oil change. There were only 2 other cars there being worked on & at least 5 – 6 mechanics in the station; and they were all just hanging around. Took almost 20 minutes to get my car on a lift. They took their sweet time. Didn’t finish till almost 8 at night. A 10 – 15 minute job took over an hour
Also, the next day while sitting in traffic, my car overheats. I come home. I see its low on antifreeze. Put some in myself & hasn’t overheated since. They could have checked and told me. After all, the mechanic was quick to tell me I need new brakes for a quick buck
I also asked them to change a rear lamp. They told me it was just loose. But it’s still out

Wow. Just wow. This place is awful. Brought my father-in-law’s car there for repairs, needed a timing belt replacement and we were quoted over $ 1600 for a job that I wound up completing myself for $ 80. They returned the car with multiple parts missing, I called to have them save the parts, and when I showed up to pick up said parts, they stated that they had «thrown them out». It took over 3 days and multiple trips to this place to have them finally replace the needed parts. Only to realize one of the parts was incorrect. When I notified the parts employee and asked him to exchange it for the correct part, his response was simply «I have nothing to do with the service department, service and parts are two different worlds». I didn’t even know how to respond. You all work for Pep Boys, don’t you? It took 4 people to get me the correct part. If they can’t handle this situation correctly I can only imagine how these guys are repairing cars. Steer clear of this place!

Well… got 4 new set of tires from them… but the issue I think they did a horrible job. TPMS light still on. And after a week, when I look at my tires, they look a bit flat, so I go to gas station to check out all the tire pressures… and all tires are between 10 to 20 PSI when all of the tires should be at 32 PSI.
So I’m not sure if they forgot to pump air into the new set of tires or the tiring sealing was bad… Either way, doesn’t matter which one, still a horrible thing happens to your customer when they paid lots money for new set of tire and $ 100 for installation fee.

Was at this location. I really appreciate the customer service. Especially Rafeek. He was super nice and was able to explain to me what they’re going to do for my car. They’re all pretty tired from the influx of people going there after the snow storm. But they seem to have it down. The tech Jerry was super nice and helpful also. He showed me what was wrong with my car and was able to fix it right away. Thank you!

Making an appointment online is a waste of time. Made an appointment online for 1 pm. When I got to there, I was told that it would be about 30 – 40 minutes before my car could be serviced. That would still be under an hour since it only should take about 15 minutes to do an oil change. It was over two hours before any work was done! I understand that making an appt online does not guarantee that it would be done at that exact time. But when I get there if they said it would be over an hour I would not have done it.

My battery went dead on my Acura MDX 2011. The day after the snowstorm, sunday afternoon and i am not able to find a replacement. I log on to
and i find my nearest store in Northern Blvd near Francis Lewis blvd. I see they have the battery for my car, so i call Monday morning 8am and I ask to have one place on the side for a pick up. 30 mins later, i am paying for the battery. I could have had it installed at his location but there was at least a 1hr wait. Plus i refuse to wait 1hr and pay an additional $ 25 to have it installed, when i can do it myself. Long and behold 40 mins later i am right in front of my house installing the battery and what a bargain $ 140 — $ 20 rebate– $ 5a battery recycle cash back in the end $ 115 plus tax.
Way cheaper than what my Acura dealer would have charged. The guy at the register was quick and very efficient to help me fill out warranty for the battery.
I like this location, I used to come here more often when it was a different auto part store. Now that is a pep boys, i have stayed away but all i am going to say is that i am going to be coming here a lot more often. Excellent customer service!

I go here once in a while to pick up some parts for my car. Let me start by saying my review is based on sales not service. I have never had service done at this pep boys location but I do go there every once in a while. When i do go in for items for my car the usually always have what i need. Sometimes it takes a lottle long to get the part, thats why i am giving them 3 stars and not more.

This place is a joke. These guys are bunch of clowns. I ordered parts on line and I received a confirmation. When I called, they only had one order. I asked the guy to get another one and call me. He assured me. He never called. The whole pep boy system SUCKS. The end…

Just wanted to share my positive experience here. On my way home one night, I ran over a giant pothole on the highway and one of my tires got a bubble on it. I freaked out and didn’t know what to do, but I knew Pep Boys was nearby. So I frantically drove over to the garage. The mechanic there, Kadeem, took a look at my tire, and told me it definitely needed to be replaced. Although the store was closing in 10 minutes, he told me he would replace the tire for me if my tires were in stock. Luckily for me, they were. Another person (unfort didn’t get his name) helped me choose the tire I needed, and 20 minutes later, and I was good to go. I was so grateful they were nice enough to deal with me although they were getting ready to close the store for the night. They were super friendly and helpful and I didn’t feel like I was getting ripped off or upcharged because of my last minute emergency.

Service is so slow. Sooooooooooo slow. They told me it’d be 1.5 hour for my tire patch (~$ 20, its $ 5 less at a lot of other places but they’re not open today), which is a 15 minute thing. I understand they’re busy but it took nearly 3 hours and I saw my car jacked up in their garage at the 1.25 hr mark so whyyyy does it take double the promised time?!
The guy who took car of me wasn’t knowledgeable either. The receipt says David. He went out initially to check my car and he comes back in for the write up, not notifying me that I should follow. Then he asks me the year make and model… did he not just go out there to look? The year I understand. but make and model?! For realz man. what were you doing? I also asked him how much longer as I have already waited 2.25hrs in the customer lounge, which is pretty ghetto (no coffee, just 1 TV with baseball on), and he said he’ll ask the tech, asked me again for the 3^rd time which tire, and went to the tech. He walked back and forth through the lounge several times right after and ignored me. Bad customer service. Never again. Hope my tire patch is actually okay. They lost my original black tire cap and replaced with a cheaper grey cap. Also inflated the tire to 39 psi… manufacturer says 32 and pep boys safety check says 32.

Every time I’ve gone here I’ve witnessed the «mechanics» do nothing but f*ck around while every space is occupied by a car that needs fixing. No wonder everything takes hours. Oh you have an appointment? Doesn’t matter. Why? Bc this place is like a «how many idiots does it take to screw on a lightbulb» joke. Labor costs more than any part you need replaced. and they are not knowledgeable even. I brought in my car for the full check up. Was gonna spend as much as I needed to fix everything from tires, breaks etc. The guy tells me my tires are good. A week later I get a flat bc my tire needed to be trashed (mavis fixed it right up). Bc according to pep boys. They wanna charge me like $ 2 for the tire and $ 198 for service. Which by the way. I’m still waiting for them to call me and let me know my tire came in (thanks for ordering it jerk offs!)
But what do you expect when you got a whole bunch of irresponsible young men w their hands in their pants. Too busy to grab a better sized tool and get down to it and actually get the job done.
Rip offs.

Good place to get your auto supplies helpful staff I go there at least once a month. they have all your auto needs

Went in last week for some wipers and a light bulb that I simply could not bear to change myself due to the blistering cold. Call me lazy, but I just rather pay to have it done.
I was not «upsold» in any way, it was my choice and whatever I wanted to spend, I did opt for the more pricey wipers because the person I dealt with (I believe Rashid or Rasheed was his name) told me he used them on his car and they have been great despite how cold and awful this winter has been.
The service was quick and professional, I will definitely come to this location whenever I need service and it’s just too cold out, or when I am just too lazt to do it myself!

Ripped off by Pepboys for changing HID headlight bulb.
Service rep explained to me that they will have to disassemble the head light assembly to replace the bulb which is why it cost $ 184 labor to replace 2 bulbs. I took their word for it.
I did a search on the Infiniti G35 Driver website and found out that it takes 5 minutes to change bulb. All that is needed is to do is turn wheel to expose wheel cover, access through wheel cover and then unscrew bulb and replace with new one It was that simple.
The estimated labor amount is 1.6 hours for a maximum 15 minute job. I promptly complained to the service manager but he insisted that it was a difficult job which is total non-​sense.
I will not take my vehicles to Pepboys again and buyer beware.

For the second year in a row, this Pep Boy location ran out of safety inspection tags by Dec. 27. I tried Pep Boys in Jamaica and Hempstead and they had no safety inspection tags either. Will never go to Pep Boys for a safety inspection. Better to deal with a neighborhood place.

they go out of their way to lie to you just to get you off the phone. They make you feel like if you’re not there to buy something that doesn’t require «service» then you shouldn’t be there. The most horrible experience here.
Made an appointment two weeks in advance for new tires. I called the day before, they QUICKLY confirmed the tire was there. Not even a slight pause to check a computer or stock. I called again and someone took the time to look and say it’s not there but it will be on the day of my appointment made TWO WEEKS prior.
On the day of, rather than waste a trip I called and they said call again in the afternoon. I called again in the afternoon and they said they «don’t know where it is.»
That kind of attitude and service made it pretty clear to me that they didn’t want me there. If it takes you over two weeks to find out whether or not you have two tires in stock and to get it, you should find another racket to be in.
No one wants to waste a day doing car maintenance, and I’d understand if this was last minute. But it wasn’t. And there’s no excuse for lying. If they couldn’t do the job they should have said so.

I’ve been coming to Pep Boys for over 2 years, fully trusting the work they did on my cars. Sadly, I will not be going again because of a very strange turn of events that showed me the PepBoys staff in Bayside are either extremely reckless or out to make a quick buck off unsuspecting customers.
I brought my car in for a NY State Inspection and about a week later my rear driver-​side tire exploded. «Thankfully», my wife was near PepBoys and asked the mechanic to take a look. According to THEIR words, the mechanic found inside the tire a «whole boxcutter», which just so happened to knock out the TPMS sensor. How does a whole box cutter end up inside an exploded tire? I asked other people familiar with cars, and they told me that a tire exploding with a box cutter inside is really bizarre. However, I didn’t question them about it and we were charged just under $ 300 to buy a brand new tire and tire sensor plus installation fees.
A little over a week later, my TPMS sensor signaled low pressure. I went to a gas station to check and found that one of the tires was underinflated (29 PSI instead of the recommended 32 PSI) and that the front passenger tire was over 51 PSI. This was 50% higher than the recommended PSI! Of course things started to smell really fishy. The extreme over inflation of tires would explain why my driver-​side rear tire freakishly EXPLODED with a box cutter inside.
Now I can understand if they overinflated this tire to let’s say 35 or even 40 PSI, but over 51 PSI? I confirmed with PepBoys staff that it is their protocol to check the tire pressure on all tires during inspections and flat fixes. So in failing to check my 51 PSI tires after two routine tire checks, the employees at PepBoys were either extremely reckless in checking and inflating my tires or purposefully tried to pull the wool over my eyes. The world will never know.
Either way, they did a very poor job «inspecting» my car and making sure my car was safe to drive upon leaving their lot. I will no longer take my cars to any PepBoys store in the future. My whole family’s lives were at risk because of them.
