While on a road trip, we did a search for nearby Mexican restaurants. The place we finally settled on happened to be closed(it was Sunday evening), but DeBuey y Vaca happened to be open AND right next door. It isn’t really in the best neighborhood, but the food is pretty close to the best authentic, homestyle Mexican food that I’ve had in a very long time. The menu varies and the food is served cafeteria style. There’s a chalkboard menu on the wall that lists any specials that they have at the time. My travel companion and I each chose to order a «plate», which comes with rice, beans, tortillas(flour or corn) and two choices of meats. I got chicken with onion and bell peppers, and carnitas. Both of them were very tender and almost falling apart when it hit my fork. J ordered some kind of roast and potatoes, and pork in a ranchera sauce, and they were both wonderful. They also served Jarritos, homemade horchata, and had an extensive salsa bar. Their corn tortillas are also home made and very fresh and SO good! I can’t really believe that no one has reviewed this place. The price was right, it was only $ 7 for way more food than I could actually eat. They also sell tacos for $ 1.50 each, which is a great deal! We are already making plans to stop by this place again the next time we are in town.
