Terrific food and service! I order food from here everytime I’m in the neighborhood. I’ve been going there since 2013 and the good is awesome!

This is perhaps my favorite Chinese restaurant in the entire state of Texas. This place is literally a hole in the wall… You walk in through the kitchen and go to the back where there is limited seating. The tables and chairs look to have stories of their own. I have been going to Hong Kong Chef for over 15 years. During this time the food has ALWAYS been hot and fresh. The chicken is white meat(upon request), the flavors are unmatched, and never change. The prices are reasonable and the quantity of food is beyond fulfilling. Items I highly suggest, the Gen Joe chicken(white meat), and of course what literally could be the best wonton soup you will ever ingest. If you’re looking for great Chinese food do yourself a favor, if you’re looking for a date spot, probably not where you want to go for esthetics. This is a foodies Chinese spot. :D

New owners — rude and not responsive to clients requests. The kid that is at the counter I suspect is either the owner or the owner’s relative. Either way he is very rude. Told another customer that he would rather she not come back. I. too. got that from him. Have been going here for many years but I will not go back. The food is not as good and the attitude from the counter is unacceptable.

I’m always weary of trying Chinese places but it was necessary since I just moved to Houston. I must say this place exceeded my expectations after trying other Chinese restaurants in the area. The thing I like most about it is that the food is fresh and a plus is that it tastes great. The daily lunch specials are a steal and they get you in and out in a timely manner. Hong Kong Chef is my one and only go to place for authentic Chinese food.

I came here today and first impression wasn’t too good. The guy standing behind the counter taking orders just gave a stare, no smile or even a hello. I didn’t feel welcomed at all. Anyways, I ordered pork fried rice and shrimp egg foo young. The fried rice was good. The egg foo young on the other hand was good also, but the amount and size of shrimp is down right insulting. There were maybe 3 pieces of tiny shrimp in each patty. What a rip off! I added pics of the food. Probably won’t be returning, especially while its hot outside since there was no A/C in the building and it was very uncomfortable eating there.

I am a New Yorker. They have the best roast pork egg foo young around. I have been coming here for years. The old husband and wife team that ran the restaurant retired about 1 — 2 yrs ago. A new younger couple runs it now. They’re not as personable as the older couple. I get the egg foo young, egg roll, fried rice and won ton soup. The pricing is decent. They still don’t accept credit cards.

Terrible. This place use to be good inexpensive Chinese food. Now it’s just inexpensive. Went there today, August 13, 2015, 4:30PM. The Bellaire, TX weather was very hot today, about 99 F, and it felt the same inside this place. They had a few floor fans on full speed but I don’t think the air conditioning was working at all. I mentioned how hot it was to the waitress, but didn’t get any response, nothing. I had the Sweet and Sour chicken(White Meat) with fried rice, egg roll and a glass of ice water for $ 6.80 including tax. I have been coming here for several years. Since new management took over about a year ago, the food portion sizes has shrunk and the prices have gone up. The egg rolls are about half the size they were a couple of years ago and the amount of rice and chicken are smaller. The pictures posted here on Unilocal are no longer accurate!

I went on a Friday night for dinner with a friend that has never been. I have always talked about how great their homemade egg rolls were. I’ve been here for over 15 years and the prices on the menu have barely changed, the original owners are no longer there but the food for the most part still tastes the same. The biggest disappointment is they no longer have the big homemade egg rolls that the original owners use to make. The new owners were making them but all of the sudden stop making them and started making the small homemade egg rolls that looked like they were store bought. It does not have the same flavor as the original homemade egg rolls and it was a little dry. It was what they were famous for since a lot of other Chinese restaurants stop making them since they require a lot of time and labor. In my opinion, don’t change anything that you are known for. I normally order the Chicken Chow Mein lunch special with an egg roll and fried rice which still taste the same except for the egg roll. I use to order the fried chicken wings and they also change the way they use to make them. Again many of the entrees still taste the same and will still come back. I would be very happy if they bring back the original big homemade egg roll.

I got food poisoning from here. Monday evening I picked up take out from them — a large general tso’s, a pint of special fried rice, and some other special/combo meats entrée. I was the only one that ate the fried rice for dinner, and that’s all I ate for dinner and the next day. Right after lunch, my body started to ache, I was getting chills, a low grade fever, and then the stomach cramps started. It was like labor contractions in my upper abdomen, coming and going, and they were getting closer together. It was terrible, and 4 days later, the cramps are still coming in waves, but not as painful. No vomiting, but yes to the other common symptoms of food posioning. I’ve never experienced food poisoning like this before. Luckily, no one else in my family got sick, but I am never eating here again. It’s also overpriced, mediocre tasting, and was hot as heck in there. I had to stand outside so I wouldn’t sweat as much, and the heat index that day was over 100.

We use to absolutely love this place. Went a few times with new owners. They have changed the food and not for the better. It is horrible quality and taste blah.

First time here and it wasn’t to bad, the service is nothing to get excited about but it’s a Togo spot so I never expect much from these type of places. The food is really good though I had general tos chicken it tasted great I got what they said was the smaller portion but it’s more than enough for two people. The prices are great here and they get your order out pretty fast I waited less than 10 mins which isn’t bad for Chinese food. I can’t wait to return

Food is pretty good! Service leaves much to be desired. I went with coworkers and she asked if we were one check, I responded but she did not hear and proceeded to roll her eyes waiting for a response. I reiterated that Yes, we are all together and she seemed really annoyed. BUT, that is not why I’m writing. The place is small, must pass through to dining area. Passed kitchen and seemed busy but clean. The lunch menu is on the back and claims to be ½ the dinner portion(not so). I ordered dinner portion and the only difference was the way it was served. Instead of all on same plate, it came with bowl of rice and entrée in separate container but portion was that of the lunch. So save a couple of $ and just get lunch. Service gets ONESTAR Food gets 3.5STARS Price gets 4STARS Parking is scarce so may have to park in HEB lot. But there is a Thai restaurant a couple of doors down that I hope to try soon! Enjoy!

Bellaire is my hometown. I’ve been eating at HongKongChef since Jack Gee first opened it in the late 50s. it is the same since it first opened, has not been remodeled in all those years ;) the food has been consistently good for all of those years. we almost always call in our order for carry out. and we almost always order off of the lunch menu since you can order from it all day. it is an incredible value

I’ve been a fan of Hong Kong Chef since 2004, this spot maybe a little hole in the wall and small, but the food is amazing and I’m never disappointed. The lunch menu is all day everyday, I normally order the 5& ½ on the lunch menu which you can never go wrong with(Egg roll, general tso’s chicken, and fried rice!) Even the sweet & sour pork is great! HKC has been around for years! The price for the amount of food you get is even better! HKC is better than a lot of other Chinese restaurants like Panda and so on. Have you seen their egg rolls here at Hong Kong Chef? Full of meat, veggies, and fried to golden perfection! They always have the best spicy mustard ever! This place has been in my «family» for years and my go to for low price meal.

What can anybody not like about this place? It’s good old fashioned chinese food like Lee’s Den many years back. Prices are good. Service is all you need it to be– order, pay, take your food. They argue with you a little when you say no MSG, but so what. Even that is predictable. The fried rice is packed in the box and sort of expands when you dish it out. Order it with extra pork for $ 1.00 and it’s a meal for two.

So, we found a gem of a place while looking for a cheap yummy place to satisfy our Chines cravings in our area a few months back. And. ITISNOTTHISPLACE. The only reason we went to this place was because our usual place is currently out of commission and we needed a fix. So. Here is the scoop. There were 5 of us. The place is smaller than my master bedroom and I chipped my back tooth on my General Tso’s Chicken. The server was crazy. Don’t do it.

As of October 17, 2013, Hong Kong Chef is under new ownership. Abe and Mimi have poured out their hearts into this restaurant to service Bellaire City in the last 14 years and are ready to hang up the aprons for retirement. They both are extremely grateful for all the wonderful customers and the relationships built in this restaurant. Hong Kong Chef has been in the Tse(Sia) family for almost 50 years and have had many memorable stories built around the delicious food served here. Abe and Mimi would like to thank all the patrons in making Hong Kong Chef such a successful and long lasting business, especially in the last 14 years. They will always remember this business as more than just a restaurant, but where families can reach out to each other through great chinese food. Thank you for all the memories! May you make new ones for the future of Hong Kong Chef and its new ownership. DeHorne Sia–

Do not be put off by the first impression you get when you walk in this place. The kitchen is up front, it’s REALLY hot in the front entrance room and my wife likes to say there’s some«opium den hidden in a back room with a gangsta card game going on like in a movie»! But it’s a well established, mom and pop, super authentic Chinese joint that serves some of the best Kung Pao chicken in the city! I read some reviews here that talk about the«rude» people there. No, they aren’t rude. They are Chinese. Their sense of manners are different than us Texans. They won’t greet you with a big«Howdy, how are ya, hon?» But they will be on top of refills and bring you what you order in a timely manner. If the feel of the back dining room is off putting to you just be like a zillion folks before you and get it to go. My wife has always said it looks a little like it should be on the rat and roach report but it’s not… that’s just part of its strange charm. I doubt since it’s opened it’s had more than a new coat of paint as an upgrade. They make well prepared, inexpensive(lunch plates at about $ 6), genuine Chinese food. I love their King Pao chicken. Most places get the heat from adding some sliced jalapenos. Here the heat is in the sauce. I love they don’t bread the chicken chunks. The veggies are chopped smaller than most places and easy to eat. The fried rice that comes with the meals is dense and soaks up the sauce perfectly. My wife loves their chow mein. I am never a big fan of chow mein but this was pretty good. She always gets the lunch special«D» with chicken chow mein and this wonderful pork in a pineapple sauce. Terrific! Egg rolls are deep fried yummy too. I love their super crunchiness. Cash only, no booze. Sure, it’s like the greasy spoon of Chinese diners. But sometimes greasy spoons ARE the best.
