McHugh Tea

I had a reservation for a group for afternoon tea. We happened by chance to have on person more than what the reservation was for. The restaurant was almost empty except for our small group, but the wait staff were not helpful or accommodating. They made it seem that adding one extra person was a huge inconvenience and made our extra guest feel quite uncomfortable. Although the allotted portions of food were plenty for us to share between our group, it was pointed out that there were not enough scones to go around for the extra person… really…a tea room that short on scones?
On this visit as well as a previous visit I found that the scones were quite small. The serving of jam and clotted cream served in tiny shot glasses, meant to be shared by two people for both of their two scones was barely enough for one scone… let alone four scones!
Needless to say I nor my group will be making a return visit.

The scones are outstanding and a perfect addition to a pot of your favorite tea. They have an extensive list of tea and the food overall is very tasty. The quiche and sandwich selections are highly recommended. The owner and staff are very helpful and friendly and the atmosphere is a perfect place to bring family or friends for tea. They also have fresh scones which have been frozen and are available for purchase to bring home and simply place in the oven. The jam and clotted cream is perfect on the scones.

Extremely overpriced and the food is terrible, the vegetable soup is literally water wth couple carrots in it.

Tea service is overpriced ($ 30 per person) and you are not told ahead of time they automatically charge you 20% gratuity. For those type of prices it is better to go to the St. Regis, this is a small little tearoom so the price for afternoon tea is much too steep, and the automatic gratuity even for a group of two is outrageous.
The best value is just ordering off the lunch menu.

Love this place. It transports me to a quaint village in England and the local tea shop. It is so relaxing and the food delicious. I had an order of the mango scones with Devon cream and jam accompanied by the organic Mink’s blend tea (Keemum, Assam, Nilgiri, and Darjeeling). Then, I had the lunch special — a petite chicken salad sandwich on a croissant, a large bowl of chicken vegetable soup, and fruit salad. A great value at $ 10. The price are very reasonable particularly considering the quality of food and service and the great atmosphere. Well done.

I enjoyed the ambience here, but was a little let down by the food. The chicken salad in my sandwich was utterly bland, the so called herbal salad dressing nothing special or herby, and worst of all — the iced peach tea had absolutely no peachiness. However, the salad was very fresh, as was the fruit served as a small side. I enjoyed the strawberry cake I had for dessert.

The first time or two I visited the tea house, I enjoyed it. The last two times I had a hard time finishing my lunch. The food was bland and dry. I make quiche Lorraine and it is easy — it is difficult to screw it up, yet they did. Perhaps they used low fat milk to make it, but it was BORING! The people who work there are nice, but the food is so uninteresting I am not going back.

I absolutely enjoy this tea shop! The owner is very knowledgable about tea, and the wait staff always very attentive — yet allowing customers the privacy to enjoy their time in such a quite place.
Off a busy thoroughfare in Bellaire, TX — in a strip center sits this little piece of heaven on earth. I drive 35 miles — one way to enjoy this respite!
Go — enjoy tea, a good meal, dessert — you won’t be disappointed!

There are few tea spots left of this kind and that makes McHugh Tea all the more of a gem!
My best friend’s family threw her a bridal brunch here the day before she got married and it was PERFECT. They have a semi-​private space that they can set up for you that fits about 16 – 20 people.
And the food! It was straight out of my imagination of the perfect tea party. Sandwiches cut into hearts, miniature scones… so much detail and everything was so good!

McHugh Tea is my go to place in Bellaire! Delicious food, cute atmosphere, friendly staff and something fun and different I would highly recommend it to anyone!
All of the quiches are great! My favorite thing to get is the home-​made chicken and vegetable soup with a grilled cheese sandwhich. BEST grilled cheese ever made in a cast iron skillet and perfectly crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. For desserts I love the chocolate pie!
The place is decorated so cute and there are even cute little gifts available like aprons, tea cups, etc.
A smaller place, the staff is so sweet and always willing to help you find the perfect tea and dish for you will like.
I actually hosted a friends bridal shower here and everyone loved it! For a group of 12 or so it is great! The food was great and presentation was great!

I took my Mom here today for a belated birthday lunch. She’s been here a few times before and really likes it, but this was my first time trying it. I love the décor — very warm and cozy, and we got a nice seat by the window. I also love all the stuff they sell — TrueLeaf tea, teapots, jams, tea towels and some other cute stuff. The place is very small inside, especially if the room in the back/​middle is being used for an event, as it was when we came. Luckily we were there pretty early and got a table. However, they do reserve tables out in the main area, so I did see them turn away a lot of people because the other tables had people at them already, or were empty but reserved. I think because of the size of the place, the tables in the front/​main area should not be able to be reserved. It should be first come, first served. They probably lost a lot of potential customers when they said no tables would be available for a while and the customers chose to leave rather than wait. They had some tables outside, but it wasn’t cute enough for me to consider eating outside. They should definitely work on putting some more effort in their outside area, especially since the inside is so small.
We both ordered the tea spritzers to drink. They were good, but not wonderful. My mom ordered the Berry Rooibos spritzer and it was a lot sweeter than the Apple Cider spritzer that I ordered… good to know for next time! We both ordered the quiche special — I had the quiche lorraine and she had the southwest quiche. It comes with fruit (delicious and fresh!) and soup or house salad. l ordered the tomato basil soup and Mom had the house salad. Mom loved the salad and said the herb vinaigrette dressing was excellent. My soup was just okay… it wasn’t very hot and it tasted like it was out of a can or box. It was more watery than creamy. Good, but not great. Now the quiches on the other hand — amazing! Great, rich flavor, and the crust was golden, flaky and so yummy! Whatever they are doing to make this… keep it up!
I had the chocolate cake for dessert, which was okay. Mom had the pecan pie which had the best tasting pecans ever, however they really should serve it warm, not cold.
I loved our waitress, Kelly. She was super friendly and knowledgeable, and checked on us at just the right times — which, if you read my other reviews you know that the waitstaff coming over only at the appropriate times (not too much or too little) is something I think is essential to your restaurant experience.
Kim McHugh came over at the end to take the check. I didn’t realize at the time that she was the owner, but I looked up their website later and I’m very impressed by her! Anyway, she was super friendly and asked us how we liked everything, but didn’t pull the whole obnoxious sales person act. I would like to come back here maybe during the week, on a day off and try some more of their teas. Unless, they do have this and I missed it, it would be nice to have something where you could sample, say five different teas of your choosing in small cups — kind of like they do beer samples at other restaurants. I want to try the teas, but don’t necessarily want to do the afternoon tea.

This is a lovely small tea shop, divided into 3 sections. Sit in the front room with plenty of sunlight, on the side seton which is set up tea-​shop style, or in the more elegant green room which is completed with a large crystal chandelier. Décor aside…
The tea selection is crazy! The servers don’t rush you at all, it’s a tea shop for goodness sake. They patiently answer all your questions. Then a tasty tasty tea off your choosing is served in lovely bright China.
If you are lucky enough to come during lunch, you are in for a real treat. The quiche was amazing! I will be back, often. I hope to try a baked sweet next. Enjoy, you won’t be sorry!

I love McHugh Tea! The atmosphere is warm and friendly and the interior is charming with photos of celebrities drinking tea and mismatched tea cups. McHugh offers an enormous assortment of teas and their scones are the best I have ever had/​be sure to try the Lemon Poppyseed scones as they are to die for! The servers are pleasant, efficient, and knowledgeable about the various teas. Kim McHugh adds a bit of grace and charm to the experience.

OK, sometimes I /​need/​a great pot of tea in a fancy teacup and some scones and clotted cream. I was in the area with a girlfriend and we decided to try this place. The service is great! (On our first time there, the owner came out and chatted w us.) The food is awesome. (Although I don’t think my 6’4 husband would appreciate the portions… this place is dainty.) The quiche is wonderful. The scones — omg can we talk about the scones!!! I MUCH prefer mini-​scones like the ones they have to big, biscuit-​like scones. And the clotted cream! Anytime I get clotted cream, my day is made, and there’s **a shocking lack** of clotted cream in Houston. And the TEA! SO good! My friend and I usually order a pot each & alternate pots.
My only disappointment with this place, and its not even enough to not give this place 5 stars, is the décor/​location. Maybe its that I grew up in the suburbs & all the tea rooms I’ve ever been to in houston are in 100yr old houses with tiny tables, creaky wood floors, and windows with curtains. I want that for this place. The décor is too modern for me. The art is tea-​themed and cute and you can buy it, but I wish the location & décor matched the feel you get from the service and food (& tea). But literally, the other stuff is so awesome, its a non-​issue.
Bottom line, GO. DON’T LISTEN TO MY PIDDLING WISHES. YOU WILL LOVE IT.

A lovely tea room celebrating their TWO Year Anniversary! The owner Kim McHugh is very passionate about her organic teas which are all delicious! They also sell bulk teas and other tea related gifts. A real treasure in Bellaire! Lunch specials are fabulous and they even have a Happy Hour from 4 – 5 with freshly baked scones!

Love this place! Went there for an event and they were able to give us a party area to hold up to 24 people. This is a great place to hold a small gathering.
Sandwiches are the cutes thing I have ever seen and scones are amazing! Very vegetarian friendly.

I came here for tea with my mom and my sister on a Saturday around 4pm. Tea time is only until 5pm so we made it just in time. We each ordered a small pot of tea to ourselves and went around trying everyone’s. The list of tea is very long, some traditional and some creative. For food, we got the mystery cake and scones. The scones take about 15 mintutes to make 3 small pieces so preorder. They were good but not worth waiting 15 minutes nor the price. The staff was friendly, but our waitress was a bit odd and awkward. She had to smell one of our pots of teas to see which one it was which I thought was a bit unprofessional.
There was a birthday party near our table all dressed up with hats and dapper outfits. It’s a cute idea to have some sort of celebration, but be forewarned, inside is very small.

SO cute! I love this place! Delicious soup, adorable décor, and fantastic little scones served with clotted cream and jam. Super nice server. I think they have pretty good prices for the area. We came at an off hour so we had the place almost to ourselves which was also nice.

What a wonderful place! Great service from a knowledgeable staff! It was the perfect place for my friends 29^th birthday celebration.

I was recently in Houston for work, and needed a venue to host a breakfast reception with a couple of colleagues. A simple google search produced this place, and I couldn’t be more satisfied. I will admit, I was hesitant at first because I saw no breakfast items on their online menu, and we wanted the event to begin early on in the day. Just a couple of emails back and forth and not only had the manager (owner?) agreed to open an hour early just for us, but she even sent us a customized breakfast menu that they could prepare for us– with lots of variety!
In getting there, I do like that while there was no one actually there yet, the manager was very flexible in allowing us to move around tables and chairs to our needs for the reception. The food they brought out was delicious– amazing quiches (try the Southwest!), and I had never had a scone with cream so that was certainly delightful. By the end of our reception, the manager was kind enough to leave the food out so that my colleagues and I could finally eat as we had forgotten to do so. :) Cost was a lot more reasonable than what I am used to at hotels where I normally host such events.
All in all, this place is really a hidden gem and I will be coming back for my own meals. Didn’t give it all 5 stars because I feel like I didn’t try enough of the food or even the tea to warrant that, but I will absolutely recommend this for your next private party.

One of my favorite restaurants to eat at when I come to Houston. A delightful menu of salads, quiches and soups.
Such a cozy and homey feel. Very nice staff and obviously an amazing variety of tea!

At the risk of losing my man card, I am recommending this dainty tea place, especially to women over 40.
Besides steeping the tea, the prices are steeped, but that is good for high falutin ladies clubs come to here without low falutin people hoggin’ tables with their PCs. The women here drive nice new cars, dress well, and have hair and nails done professionally. They look like the residents in the big Bellaire and West U houses. They come here because the tea is good, the food is good & has nice presentation, décor is quaint, it’s quiet enough to talk, and the tea cups (various assorted) are pretty, dainty & real China. There is no blaring peppy music to agitate you to eat and drink faster. Instead, it is the relaxing music of the Sunny radio station.
Tea was excellent, again. Pina Collada this time.
The scones, quiche, and pies are top notch quality (crust is exceptional). You don’t get large portions, but small & high quality is what this clientele wants.
I was one of four men (accompaniments) scattered amongst about 30 women at lunchtime during the week. Two of the men even stuck their pinky fingers out when holding the cup.
The game we play here is to guess the club the ladies at each table belong to. Garden club? Charity/​benefit organization? Red Hat club? Purple clothing club?
Anyway, this is a cozy, feel good place.
